Billie's paw

Yesterday, Billie had a checkup appointement with the specialist vet. He was pretty pleased with the paw, but we are trying to find a new way of treatment. The current treatment is not for long term use ... and the paw is starting to look a bit on the worse side again.
It really is a never ending story.

It’s such a shame, poor Billie and you. I hope your specialist can come up with another option which will clobber that infection 🤞

Sorry to hear this.
Hope a new treatment can be found that will work.
Gorgeous Billie is lucky to have such a dedicated slave.

The treatment is all about trial and error at the moment unfortunately.
Usually, the paw gets better with the treatment, we first applied ... or it get's worse and the infection spreads to the bone.
In Billie's case, I can prevent it from getting worse. The vet said that it could have gotten so much worse, if I wouldn't have treated it the way I did. But I suspect that he is at a loss what to recommend at the moment.
So we will try a different cream and I'll have a look if more soaking does good or bad. She is also on Baytril again, I started last week.
So we will see. :hmm:

Billie had two check up vet appointments in the last weeks.
The first time, the specialist vet was pretty pleased, but adviced me to give it a try without the bandage.
I was sceptical, because the paw always started to bleed when without bandage, but it worked out pretty good. There was some bleeding on the first day, but since then everything was fine.
The second time, the vet saw a definite improvement, but he increased the baytril dosis nevertheless.
So now the piggies are living on fleece (not my favorite choice) and I feel like I'm spot cleaning and washing all the time. But if it works for Billie, of course I'll keep them on fleece.

Update on Billie's paw:
Piggies are still living on fleece. I hate it, but it seems to work for Billie's paw.

It does look better and there hasn't been any bleeding. So I keep my fingers crossed that it won't take a turn for the worse.
Billie has lost a bit of weight, but at the moment it seems to have stabilzed again.
And I have increased the metacam a bit, but I don't think the paw was the reason, Billie looked like she would need more pain medication. It was probably due to her arthritis.

I’ll pack extra carrots and pea flakes next year.
Just to help beautiful Billie of course.
Glad the paw is looking better.

Last evening I was cutting everypig's nails. Billie was last - good thing, because I probably wouldn't have been able to continue with the cutting after this incident.
Because when doing Billie's nails, one of them fell off! :yikes:
There wasn't much blood and Billie didn't seem bothered, but it was quite a shock.

That's the nail that came off

And this is Billie's paw today

Over 30 years of keeping piggies and this is a first time. :(
Has anyone had such an incident? Any experiences with a missing nail?

Never seen anything like that! One of my toenails once went purple and fell off, but it grew back. It didn't hurt - it must have died off a while before.
That probably doesn't help at all though!

I sent a picture to the specialist vet. He said that it could mean nothing bad.
But he does want to see Billie sooner than we talked about last week. :(

I have to confess that I'm scared that it could be a sign that the infection has spread to the bone.
But I hope that's not the case...

I really hope it’s just a one off and not infection. Sending healing vibes to Billie. ❤️

Billie's paw hasn't changed much during the last weeks. But on Friday evening I noticed that the toe with the missing nail looked a bit different.
Don't know if Billie nibbled on it or if a bit just fell off again. But it probably isn't the best sign. :(
At least it hasn't visibly changed since Friday.

Second picture was taken before yesterday's nail cutting.
