Billie's paw

I'll be going on a short vacation soon ... and perfect timing: Billie's paw is getting worse again. :(
At the moment we switched to twice daily paw soaks again.
You can imagine how amused Billie is...

Oh no, poor Billie! It always happens at the worst time. I hope the increased foot soaks do the trick. What will you do while you're away?

Oh no. Added stress for you when you should be relaxing and enjoying yourself. I hope it improves before you go. 🤞

The piggies will stay with a friend of mine. She is an experienced keeper, but we will see how the bandaging goes.
I'll probably have to start an intensive therapy session afterwards, which wouldn't be too bad ... if my toilet would'nt need a big repair job right when I come back. :(

Last week has been a rollercoaster ride. Apart from the fact that I managed to catch a nasty cold (fortunately all covid tests were negativ, but the thought 'What if the test is false negative' is still always there.), Billie's paw started bleeding pretty badly on Tuesday.
That would have been a bit depressing in itself, but it really is super bad timing.
It got a little bit better in last couple of days, but I hope that my friend will managed next week.

Oh no, what a shame. these things always happen at Bank Holidays, weekends and when you least need them. I hope you can get her paw under control before you have to go away. I don’t suppose there is any chance that you could take Billie and a friend with you?

No, that would be too much stress for everyone. I just habe to hope that there won't be a big catastrophe while I'm away.

I'm happy to report that Billie's paw didn't suffer while I was away - it was only for 4 days. My friend changed the bandage once and Billie was a really good girl and didn't try to get rid of it.

Now I've started the twice daily paw soaks and bandage changes again. I'm still not sure what is going on. We had made good progress and now everything looks worse again.
The specialist vet promised to think about other treatment options, but I'm not very optimistic that he will come up with something new.

At least there hasn't been much blood during these last few days.
A miracle would be much appreciate.

The ongoing saga of Billie's paw ... we're back in the spot where treatment doesn't show any improvement. :(

OUCH! WOUCH! NOUCH! That's what my lovely late Gran used to say when something really hurt. That looks like its a really nasty hurty ouchy wouchy nouchy foot! Poor Billie she must be in significant pain with that. You are doing your best to get it better. Don't blame yourself for how it is. You've been treating it for months. If you hadn't been doing all you have it may well be a lot worse.

Thank you!
I don't blame myself, I'm just frustrated that no treatment really works. :(
It doesn't seem to hurt that much, but of course Billie is on Metacam and I monitor her closely. If I have the slightest feeling that she needs more, she'll get it.

At the moment I'm waiting for the specialist vet to get back to me. But I don't have high hopes for a different kind of treatment (that'll work).

Just a quick update - not much new to tell.
Since the therapy that worked great for months doesn't seem to work any more :soz:, the specialist vet prescribed a new cream with silver and I'm now bathing with Epsom salt instead of mallow tea. At the moment we are only doing the bathing and bandage changing once a day to see if the healing process works better with once or twice daily baths.
With the new cream the paw seems stalbe, but we are a long way from getting better.
It's quite frustrating.

I have to be extremly careful when taking off the used bandage, but unfortunately there are times when the paw starts to bleed no matter how careful I am. And a tug from Billie at the wrong moment doesn't help either.
She will probably have to go back on Baytril. The specialist vet will decide this week.

I think ir's looking a bit better at the moment. Since I'm giving Metacam twice daily, Billie has left the bandage only (more or less).

The specialist vet sent a paper of a publication to me a few weeks back. Since it mentions not to 'disturb' the wound too much (and the more intensive therapy that work so well in spring, doesn't work any more), I only change the bandage once a day. We do the Epsom Salt soak just for a short while whenever the bandage sticks to the wound when changing it. And instead of the Bepanthen cream I use a cream that contains silver.

The paw is pretty much stable, but it's still a bit of an up and down. And in the paper was mentioned that the paw will probably need lifelong protection. So Billie will have to live with the bandage.

I'm still reluctant to start with the Baytril again (though the vet is in favour of it). It's just too hot to try anything that could have a negative affect in Biilie's wellbeing, if it's not absolutely necessary. But of course I'm monitoring her closely.

Thank you! :D
Yes, at the moment it looks better, but I hope it will stay that way.
Last time the paw looked even better, Billie took the bandage off once soon after the changing. Since I wasn't home, I only noticed a few hours later ... and we were nearly back to square one. So I learned not to get my hopes up too high.

Short update ... there is not much new to tell.

Since I give the pain meds twice a day, Billie leaves the bandage alone. So we didn't have an 'accident' in quite a while.
At the moment the paw looks pretty stalbe, but we just don't get further than this. It would be great to see some real long term improvement.
