Billie's paw

Hannah had an infection in her foot. Simon initially hoped that by removing one toe it would sort it, but when he started op he needed to remove two toes and part of the pad.
Amputation is the last straw, but the specialist vet said that it won't be necessary in the near future if the treatment goes well.
I'm really scared about amputation. I know they get along, but I knew a boar with only three feet and though he was much lighter than Billie, he was struggeling with chronic pain.
Billie is a bit of a heavy weighted piggy (also a really big girl) and I'm scared that amputating one paw will only lead to the same condition on the other paw. And then what? :(

Hannah was luckily left with four working paws. The one was a bit smaller but it didn’t affect how she moved around. I hope Billie’s paw will improve soon xx

The metacam helps. She was acting a bit more normal yesterday evening, though she still doesn't move around much.
Since she took off her bandage on Tuesday and took a turn for the worse, she left the bandage alone at least. But when I came home yesterday, she nearly had it off again.
So it's an ongoing circle - she feels better, the bandage has to come off - she feels worse, the bandage is left alone - she feels better... :(

It's a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride. I get my hopes up, when it looks a bit better, and then it's extremely frustrating, when Billie is in such a bad state even though I try to do everything the vets suggest.

I don't mind the effort. When you've got animals, there are always great times and also sad, exhausting times. But it does take a lot of energy - and the general circumstances are draining as well, especially since Bonny has got teeth problems out off the blue.

It really would be great to be able to go on a holiday this year (I haven't been away for 2 years now because of the covid situation) and see the ocean again, but if Billie's paw doesn't improve, I don't think that it will be possible. I have got 3 friends who would take care of my piggies (apart from the fact that one of them will be moving to a smaller appartement soon, so I'll probaly be down to two options), but neither one could go through the daily routine with Billie. If Billie's paw doesn't get better, I don't think a vacation will be possible.

But apart from these selfish thoughts, I hope that the situation will improve for Billie's sake, because she really deserves a great life without pain. She is such a sweet girl.

I am so sorry it’s such an ongoing battle, and it’s one step forward then another one back. We are here to support you x

At the moment, she is acting pretty normal. We even had a special cuddle in the evening.

The paw doesn't look better, but we are both getting into the routine. She doesn't like it, but she is very patient. And in the last couple of days, she didn't take the bandage off. She works on it and it isn't always really in the right place any more, but the paw is still covered
Of course she is still on a high dose of Metacam, but at least she feels better..

I'm starting to dread Tuesdays. :(
Last week Billie took of the bandage while I was at work ... and took a massive turn for the worse as a consequence.
Today it happened in the evening while I was spot cleaning and the piggies were free roaming in my living room. Billie left blood stains all over the carpet, before I noticed what was going on.

Billie was exhausted after I managed to pick her up, clean the paw and wrap it up again.
And I was exhausted after trying to get the blood stains out of the carpet. Most blood stains were on the small carpets and old towels, that can be washed easily. But not all of them.

I really hope she will leave the bandage alone and that there won't be another blood bath in the near future.

Oh Billie, you really should leave the bandage on you paw.
It has to get better and it won’t if you keep taking the bandage off.
