Betsy Ovarian Cysts?

Just heard back from my fave vet Rachel. She will ask the very lovely Alfonso to review Betsy's case when he is back in on Monday. She has said as a stop gap Betsy could have hCG but if they ordered it in it most likely wouldn't be in until the end of the week because of the Bank Holiday. What is everyone thoughts on hCG please? I think @GPTV has experience of this? I have replied that I would rather Betsy had the spay sooner rather than later if at all possible.

I’ve not had personal experience of the injections but if I were you I’d press for a spay. It’s to prevent suffering after all x

Yes my vet used the HCG injections for Ellie & they worked really well, they lasted about 12 months before the cyst grew again. But Ellie was 6yrs old when she had them first & my vets weren't prepared to spay her due to the risks, but she also said that she did few ops on Guineas, especially older ones so I think the fact that they're weren't exotic vets or particularly experienced in older piggies ops, she didn't want to risk it for me.

I'll try and find the link for her thread.
Regular Hormonal Injections? Ovarian cysts

It's not her thread but most of the info is on it. Xx

Ellie had 2x injections, at 6yrs & another 2x at 7yrs.

I know sometimes they just don't work & others they're successful as Ellies.
If Betsy has the injections as a stop gap she may not need a spay, but if they don't work then Betsy will be older to be going in for a general anaesthetic than now. So consider which option would be most beneficial short or long term, if she could be spayed after injections maybe, when things are more settled.

Ps The injections can be quite expensive too! :( x

Aw, hope Betsy gets her spay soon or you can get some injections sorted, shame when it impacts on her love of Dennis x

Just briefly caught up on this feed. Ask your vets about the hormone implant. It is used in dogs but they've discovered it's benefits for guinea pigs and ovarian cysts. When Honeyw as finally diagnosed with ovarian cysts (many uneducated vets told me other things) because of her age we tried an implant first. Within 4 days her hair was growing back and her sides were shrinking drastically to a more normal size. After about 6 months she did end up requiring a spay and her body started over producing hormones and the cysts filled again. But especially during this time I would ask about this as it just done in the back of their neck with no recovery time. It was slightly pricey, think I paid about £130 all in all, but it definitely was worth it and I would use it again should I find myself in a similar situation. Hope Betsy is okay whatever decision you make for her x

Have just had a telephone conversation with the lovely Alfonso. Betsy is going to have her spay on Thursday. He wanted to try the injections first until I told him that her bum end was quite distended and I could feel a big lump underneath her that I couldn't feel last week and I was worried the cyst was going to burst. He had a word with his boss and it is now going ahead. I'm happy that my fave vet Rachel is performing the operation as she saved Christian's life with a very tricky abscess removal a couple of years ago. :)
