Had an email from Evri this morning to say my parcel that's taken weeks to arrive is on the way and will be delivered between 11am and 1pm. (What they mean is they've found it at last) It's now 1.45 and it's still not here! I've been waiting to go out. :hb: It seems a change of name has not improved the service!
They are rubbish, Evri left a parcel on our back door step in light rain despite being asked to leave the parcel inside the summerhouse and that is right next to the back door step :(

@Siikibam @Lorcan @Betsy @anyar.dris

I probably worded that all wrong. I've had to wear glasses all the time for years now but every time I get a new prescription I always start wearing them in inside. I think I'm just about used to them, most I've had them on is about 6 hours at a time but obviously inside. Tomorrow I'm going to have to try them outside and it sort of worries me but I can't work out why.

Also, my laptop has been repaired. It's come back with a new hard drive and it's all been reset. Apparently putting word back on it is simple but we'll see!

Okay. Was there a big change in your prescription? You will be okay tomorrow. Maybe wear then an hour when you go out tomorrow, though only if you’d be okay not wearing them all the time.

So. I just sewed my first ever skirt..

And it was a disaster! It is so messy! I got so confused by all the different tutorials I watched, my own warped logic, the lining, the zipper, gosh it was frustrating!😂

In the end I just finished it out of spite which I definitely should not have done - I would have learned a lot more had I finished it properly!

Is this how everyone starts? I’m doing my best finding humour in it, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t care! Usually I’m good at things! Ugh!

Are you new to sewing? Or new to sewing clothes? If so, I would say yes that's how everyone starts. I am nearly 3 years in to sewing (don't find much time to do it) and still never tackled a zip. If you are new to sewing you really need to start with some simple things that will give you the skills to move on to things like this skirt. Even now I try and pick patterns that introduce just one new thing at a time. I've started a maxi dress today and the new thing with this dress for me is bias binding

No it only changed a little bit, optician wasn't concerned. My old glasses are well worn. Lenses scratched and reflective layer is peeling, frame is all battered too. I've told myself to stop being silly and going to put them on in the morning and leave them on all day. Don't even know why I'm so sensitive this time with them, I pay a lot to feel confident in them so usually can't wait to wear them!

Eyes, I'd swap mine for a normal pair with 20/20 vision any day....

I have made 2 items of clothing so far the first a t-shirt I made huge, and had to cut it down & sew it again, despite following the pattern. The second was supposed to be a simple tunic top, I think it looks like a nightie!
I would definitely recommend seeking out simple patterns.
Zips sound scary!

Sewing guinea pig fleeces is my favourite on the sewing machine, simple straight sides, even they turn out not quite the size I hoped sometimes.

Woke up this morning thinking it felt a bit on the cold side. Goblin's room was at 13.5° Dunno how I screwed up the heating timer quite so badly as that, but. :td:

Argh my washing machine. Was gonna do two loads of washing today. Still got a bit of vertigo so I was going to leave cage clean til tomorrow but figured still getting the fleece washed, no big issue right? First load went fine. Second load got put in by 14.45 and I've just been downstairs and it was making noise and nothing more. Like it'd decided to hang, mid cycle. I'm not convinced it even made it to the rinse stage although water had clearly been in the drum. Pause, reset to zero, try a wash cycle. Still the same noise. Still no movement.

Pause. Try again. Still no movement.
Pause. Try again with Drain. Still no movement.

Pause. Swap to Spin. Oh, that got its attention. It's...well, I left it at the start of the cycle because that thing is terrifying in a full spin but from the way the floor's shaking right now I'll assume it's spinning.

So. If it does the main wash, and if it does the Spin...why's it hanging on the Rinse part of the cycle? My own clothes are due a wash tomorrow and it's not like I have other appropriate laundry options. Well, except for the laundrette across the street I've just remembered exists but for that I'd need cash I don't have on hand and there's not actually any cash point close by. So, no laundrette.

Stupid thing. But something's shaking the floors (and walls) so it's definitely on the Spin.

Edit: Oh, and I worked out where I made the mistake with the heating. Still a stupid thing to have done, mind you.

Hopefully the wm was just after your attention and as it got it will work ok 😂

Oh no. I share your washing machine frustration. Mine also hangs sometimes and fails to spin. But I think that might be due to too many piggie fleeces and er …. um …. horse rugs 😂

The first wash, the one it behaved for, was the one with the big fleece in it. This one had a hoodie of mine, and then a bunch of goblin beds and some fleecy bits for the floor of a bed. Unfortunately it also had the beds I put the Snugglesafes in, so I needed those back (and dry!) for tonight lol.

Washing machine loading with heavy hoodies and piggy fleeces can be counter-intuitive- less means an imbalanced load that wont spin, or even go round properly, while more that looks like too much often washes and spins fine because it doesnt all bump to one side!
However since I bought the actually very cheap Beko 10kg Eco washer (it is part recycled so only cost about £280) I've never had that problem, cos it weighs your washing as you put it in and adjusts water and speed and action accordingly! Tis a magnificent washer, has some magic paddles or something in the (recycled) drum, eliminates hay and Blod fur without any rinsing- I have no idea where the hay and fur goes, but it goes- and you can set it to wash at room temp sometimes rather than choosing 30 or 40 degrees, to save money on the electric :)
10p a wash it costs, and fits in a whole piggy cage of stuff, absolute bargain!

Nah the first wash was definitely the heavier one - and I know that machine can cope with heavier loads again, even if it does complain about being told to wash a weeks worth of clothes plus a pair of jeans plus a hoodie in one load. Maybe I should stop asking it to do that?

Edit: And I don't have the money to drop on a new washer. Same as when I needed the fridge freezer replacing. Wouldn't have been horrendously expensive, but it's a lot to drop at once.

Please don't let me derail the conversation, I just want to unpack something a bit before I need to relay the same thing to people IRL.

I'm going to dance around a few details because of an impending insurance claim and possible follow-up from the police.

Today we went to see a new (to us) car as my contract is up for renewal and we needed something that could carry us, our baby, and our mentally-a-lapdog-but-actually-30kg Golden Retriever. It was perfect for what we need so we got the finance provisionally sorted, including a part-exchange of our current vehicle.

On our way home, a possibly intoxicated driver hit our car while it was parked. The damage should just be cosmetic but I'm worried that it (even once repaired), the claim, and the report we had to make to the police will affect the purchase. No-one was hurt, we have contact information for insurance, we even have witnesses, but... I'm anxious. Oh, and we couldn't stop someone we believe was drunk from driving off into the sunset and doing god knows what else damage.

I now have what feels like an overwhelming to do list for tomorrow to get this sorted, and praying the police don't contact us to let us know the driver has done any more harm. I just don't understand why people drink-drive.

I’m sorry you had to go thru that. Thank goodness you are all ok.
Your car can be fixed.
It should not effect your new purchase.
I had someone reverse into my car a few years ago when the sale of same car was due the following week.
It was repaired and sale happened.
One step at a time to get it sorted - you can do it !
Keep positive and the good news is that driver will be on the police radar now and if he/she goes thru an ANPR camera they might just catch him drunk. We can hope.
Try not to worry I’m sure it’ll turn out alright 🥰

I am so sorry this happened, don't forget if the car seat was in the car at the time you are able to claim for a new one incase it was compromised

My nails seem so brittle at the moment, they look a bit of a state. I keep them short but not sure its helping.

It's the cold weather, mine always split and break in winter. I try to remember to wear gloves when I go out but once I take them off in a shop I forget to put them back on.

Thank you @Roselina, I read this last night and it was exactly what I needed to hear and it helped calm me down. 😊

@Lady Kelly it hadn't even crossed my mind yet so thank you for flagging, I made sure to mention it when submitting the claim and our insurance provider is arranging for an assessment. 👍

The update is that we've contacted everyone today and the car purchase is still on. The dealership will handle the repairs themselves - apparently there's some electrics relating to parking sensors there, they needs a hands-on check to confirm any damage - and liaise with the insurance company with invoices etc. Insurance-wise, because it's so obviously not our fault not only is our no claims discount going to stay intact, we don't even need to pay our agreed excess. Still going to be expensive in the short term but hopefully we will get everything back.

@Sar, I've been having the same problem plus apparently when I'm half asleep and stressed because the baby won't sleep, my childhood habit of biting my nails resurfaces. As part of some enforced self-care I went and had a manicure for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago and apparently applying cuticle oil can help strengthen new growth - not sure if it's true, but. Having some gel nail polish on has really helped stopped my nails from breaking, at least.

Ah Poggle I’m so pleased to read your post - it’s always a worry and stressful when something like that happens.
The universe sends us these little hiccups now and again 🥰

Oh that is a huge relief. The one thing I would say, sorry I can't remember how old little one is, if your insurance company offer a Halfords voucher for the car seat you are within your rights to refuse it and demand the money to buy a replacement. I say this as I don't know whether you are aware of the safety benefits of extended rear facing and the huge variance in the safety of "legal" car seats. I assumed all car seats were similar as they are being sold legally and then a friend pointed me to the ERF Facebook group and my god I have learnt so much. One of the big things that comes up is that Halfords do not have any plus tested rear facing seats on sale so the advice is regularly to refuse the voucher.

On the nail biting front, I bit my nails all my life and struggled with biting them when stressed and when trying to keep my mouth shut during work meetings 🤣 when I got engaged I decided I wanted nice nails so I started having regular manicures. I had a nail treatment done, I think I had around 8 sessions of it, and it goes on the nail before the gel polish. The pretty gel polish stopped me biting them in the meantime. I did this for just over a year before getting married. Now (married for 4.5 years) the only time I struggle not to bite them is if I break a nail, there's a rough bit and I don't have a file with me 😂 persevere, it's definitely worth it

Not a rant as such just offloading. Feeling stressed and overwhelmed. But hopefully with the great support I will be okay. I’m trying to be positive but do have moments of sadness and wanting to cry. But no point as it won’t help.

I’m off to plan and watch some YouTube. Hopefully I can sleep earlier today, I need a good sleep!
