It never rains........

The antibiotic I have been given is Engemycin. Not one I have come across before. Does anyone know if it is likely to cause a stomach upset? @Abi_nurse @Wiebke

Dear Ginger Pig,
as fellow boar I feel your pain and the indignity you have to suffer.
I can only advice you to wriggle around, try to fend off any handling of your boar parts with your hind legs ... and a few well placed nips never come amiss.
I hope that this mistreatment doesn't last long.
Yours not wanting to think that something similar could happen to me...
Odi

Engemycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic,oxytetracycline....its used in many animals.ive not seen it used in guinea pigs before.its given intramuscular injection in horses ,dogs etc.
Though if you use prebiotic it should help.its good for skin infections it's used in humans.
I would ask your vet for how it effects guinea pigs.xx

Just had a call from the vet. Ginger has had a bladder flush and there was also a small stone in his penis which they have had to remove by making a small hole (which sounds soooo painful). They don't stitch the hole but allow it to heal naturally, so i have been warned that his pee may come out of two places for a few days until it starts to heal. He is in ICU at the moment as he is a little cold and i need to call back later to see if we can collect him today. He will be coming home with antibiotics, metacam and gabapentin.

We have our fingers crossed that he recovers well. The poor little fella has been through so much.
Sooo sorry to read your upsetting story, they are beautiful animals they don't deserve to go through all that, fingers crossed he'll make a full recovery, lots of cuddles help don't they? aww thinking of you & sending big hugs xx

Unfortunately, Ginger Pig is not reacting well to the new antibiotic so we are back to syringe feeding him. There is also some nasty stuff coming from his wound which i am cleaning a few times a day. Both me and Ginger Pig are finding this quiet stressful but i'm hoping there will be some improvement (at least in the wound) in the next couple of days. I know that if this infection doesn't clear up he will need another anaesthetic so that the wound can be cleaned properly (this would be his 3rd in a month) and he did not recover well from the last one. I am worried for my little ginger fella.

The one thing he is still eating is grass, so i am out in garden every couple of hours with the scissors. 🙂

Fingers and paws crossed for you and Ginger over here, I'm not surprised this is stressing you both out :(

So sorry you and Ginger Pig are having such an awful time, sending loads of healing vibes to Ginger x

I’m sorry it’s so tough for Ginger pig and you - I’m hoping things will improve for him - sending healing vibes and much love to you both ❤️

Aww Ginger Pig that looks so yummy. Nom nom.
He looks just like Mavis did when she was ill, all those bones on show ☹️ I really hope he picks up soon, that the wound heals and stops being gunky. Sending you love at this tiring time. X

I’m so pleased he’s enjoyed a little munch bless him :luv: Keep up that scoffing gorgeous boy! Really hope he feels a bit better soon xx

A little update on Ginger Pig. Second post-op check today and the infection has cleared up. 3 more days of antibiotics just to make sure but at least no more scrubbing of his boarly bits. Ginger Pig will then just be on Metacam and Gabapentin for his arthritis. The best news is that he has gained 40g in the past week. So his weight is creeping back up. 😃
