Does This Require Urgent Vets Today?

Oh bless you and your poorly girl. I've only just logged on and come straight to check on your thread.

Firstly well done for getting her admitted. You have done an absolutely fantastic job keeping her going.

Secondly - self care is just as important right now as care for little Miss Toastie. While she is at the vets you absolutely must get some rest. She is in the best of hands. And you need to get some sleep. Caring for a sick pig is physically mentally and emotionally exhausting. Please try to switch off and get a couple of hours sleep.

Complaints, recriminations, whatever - they can all wait. What matters now is you and Toastie. Focus on the here and now. The rest can wait till the dust has settled.

HUGE HUGS xx

Completely agree with everyone, see to yourself and toast first.

Definitely complain after though, very difficult if the out of hours vet you spoke to was a co owner of the practice, or does the co owner own the company that provides the out of hours service? Anyway rest for now, vets have a governing body you can go to if necessary. Sending hugs

Been following this, just wanted to say you've done a fantastic job caring for Toast and she's in the best of hands! I'd absolutely put a complaint in!

Look after yourself, try and get some sleep and something to eat if you can! Xx

I went back and my vet told me to prepare for the worst. He's going to phone at 12pm and if she's not any better he feels it would he best to let her go. Its a very severe case of bloat, something I've been trying to get help with for 2 days, but he thinks it's too late now. I'm absolutely devastated.

I am so sorry...
but... your vet said "it is too late NOW", that means that two days ago it would not have been late...
A complain? no... I would do even more. That clinic would live bad moments with me...
anyway, sorry for you of course

Have they mentioned which type of bloat it is? Liquid or gas?
They didn't, but he sides blew up like a balloon and sounded like a drum when tapped so i think that means gas?

He phoned there to say they've managed to get some syringe feed into her (She wasn't swallowing it earlier and was just letting it drip out her mouth) but to remain realistic that they may not be able to sort out the bloat as it's just so severe

That does sound like gas, which tends to have a better survival rate than liquid.

I have everything crossed for you both. I really hope she feels better soon and starts to recover x

What is the difference between liquid and gas bloat, how can you tell which is which?

Bloat

This probably explains it better than I could.

Have you managed to get any sleep yet, or at least have a rest in bed?

I never thought that it may be liquid bloat. Her stomach did sound like gurgling at some points. Is this something that vets would know the difference of? I'm now panicking incase it is liquid and it's not spotted. She was going for an x-ray, would liquid bloat show up on an x-ray?

Ive not slept yet I can't

I had to phone reception to see if I could get an update on Toast. The vet said he would phone at 6 but I couldn't wait.
They said she is "stable" and that was all they said.

That isn't good news is it? Stable doesn't mean better, it just means not any worse?
I feel physically sick at the thought of Toast in there without me, she must be so scared.

Am I doing the wrong thing by leaving her until this evening to wait for any improvement? I don't want her in pain and I'll make the decision if I have to, but she's been though so much and she's such a fighter I think she deserves a chance?

I have always been allowed to visit my pets when they are inpatients at a veterinary practice, so I feel it is acceptable to ask. I think you need to be discussing Quality of Life with the vet when you speak to them, but I do feel you need to have seen Toast before having that conversation.

Oh Toast! Stable is good though! Not better, but definitely not worse! Perhaps now she's stopped declining in health she may slowly begin to recover? Perhaps see what the vet thinks at 6. Thinking of you and Toast <3 xx

Don't think it would hurt to ask, most day patients would have gone or be going home now. This is an important time in your life and in Toasts' please don't think about any perceived inconvenience to others. Thinking of you. x

Agreed

I've been in to see my piggies when they have been inpatients.

Wishing you and toast the very best and crossing everything . I think stable sounds fairly positive.
