COVID-19 Coronavirus

I went supermarket shopping yesterday, hardly anyone had a mask on. As for social distancing, it seems it no longer exists. No wonder the number of infections is still rising here.

One of the social workers I work with has told me that if there's no new restrictions next week, we're going to Tesco. I haven't set foot in a shop that wasn't a garage or a corner shop since 24-hr shopping stopped because I usually would go in overnight. I'm not looking forward to it if I'm honest.

The mask thing really bugs me. I've noticed in my local shop that barely any one wears a mask now. I only go in once a week but I always feel stupid masked up when others just wander in & they can't all be exempt. The amount of people on the bus too that wear a mask when they get on, only to take it off or use as a chin support when they sit down is ridiculous.

Maybe you need to do it to say you've done it & get it out of the way? I mean it in the nicest possible way as I've found the first time is the hardest.
I was the same when I went to the local supermarket for the first time & got the bus after 14 weeks. It's a little easier now, I still avoid people in supermarkets/shops & follow one way systems, stand on lines or in boxes as this keeps my anxiety under control enough to get round the shop but I don't like it much. On the bus I sit listening to my ipod, often with steamed up glasses & I avoid touching anything where possible.

I'm taking mum to town on Monday as we both need to visit the bank. She hasn't been since February & I've only been in for my Specsavers appointments. It's going to be so different from how our town trips used to be but it will nice to be out & do something "normal".

It's this exactly, and I know it, and I still don't want to do it. I can't even have a cigarette outside to calm my nerves like I normally would at the moment especially if there's queuing going on because it's hardly fair to anyone else in the queue. And it's going to have to be Tesco because that's where I normally shop so I know where things are except it's been 6 months, so maybe I don't, and maybe I'd be better off going to Asda/Aldi/Lidl/Morrisons instead. But I can't do that either because I can't.

She's not above shoving me through the doorway somehow if she needs to, I'm not getting out of this unless I'm sick lol. But I'd be so grateful if I could just not do it, you know?

@Lorcan I understand & think you will feel better about it once you've done it. Even if you choose not to go again for a while you will know what to expect.

I did it! Okay it was slightly awkward, the Tesco has a small café so we went in to get a drink first and I probably took my mask off slightly early because masks and people and being inside a building with people was new. Scary, and new. But I survived!

And now I have to go out next week too. Help.

To me the biggest surprise was that a bottle of Coke (500ml) was only 95p, I haven't seen them that cheap in years. And they insisted on taking a name and a contact number, I'm guessing for track and trace purposes. I also must've looked a little lost because the lady behind the counter was very nice, and gave me stuff I didn't even know I needed. Like a cup.

I took the mask off after she'd given me the bottle and the cup so it wasn't massively early...but I panicked and played it off like it'd irritated behind my ear, what with the psoriasis. I'm not sure anyone minded all that much though.

More doom & gloom from the scientific advisers today. I missed the announcement but have read about it when on the bus. Not sure what to think about it really, is it a true prediction or are they scaremonging?! Obviously cases are going up which is clearly a worry & this will only increase with the return to schools/soon universities etc.

I'm so done with this year!

They said that if cases stay on the ‘doubling every 7 days’ trajectory they are currently on, then the number of cases etc as per their speeches today will be the likelihood of what will happen. So they need to reduce the reproduction rate so it doesn’t get to that state.

The PM is making an announcement tomorrow afternoon (5pm I think I heard).

Did I just hear the news right? 'President' Trump has got the coronavirus?
Or is that fake news or me mis-hearing?
Yes he has the virus, I'm too nice to not hope he will be ok but there's a lesson right there for all his anti-mask anti-lockdown supporters who believe the virus is a left-wing conspiracy :(

I've got no sympathy for him. He can only blame himself. Loads of people in the comments sections of every news FB pages don't believe he really got it after all the lies he is spreading. Can't really blame them for all their reactions and lack of sympathy. 🤷‍♀️ It's funny though that his supporters are now believing the virus is real and offering their thoughts and prayers for his recovery. 🙄

I vote fake news. The debate went terribly. He can prevent further collateral damage by having a legitimate reason to hide away for a fortnight. He then comes back a hero having beaten the virus that would certainly have killed “sleepy Joe”.

I’m very much with you all the way on this

That's an interesting take on it!
Doubtless he'd like the sympathy vote, not that he deserves one. Though it would be uncharitable and uncivilised to wish him ill.
I could see him using it to claim the virus doesn't matter, if he recovers easily. But what happens if he's too unwell to continue the campaign, or to continue in office after the vote? The ship of state needs some hand on the tiller, not to be heading off into the wide blue yonder like the Flying Dutchman...

Well, I don't like it, but I've had to give up on wearing masks entirely. I've never been good with things near my face (glasses the only exception after 25 years of them) but I'm in the middle of a horrendous psoriasis flare that I hoped was maybe going to be one or two days. Instead the skin on my chest is inflamed, angry and itched to its last layers, I have what look like scratches on my face around the nose and upper cheekbones (but aren't, peeling skin instead) and my scalp and ears are covered in lesions, cracked skin, and a few open skin patches.
I know it's only for what, a half hour each time? But it's a half hour I had issues with before the flare up, and even if I put one on the itching would mean I'd be constantly touching it to rearrange it anyway. No more masks for me :( makes going outside about 300x worse now mind you, I swear I feel almost naked.

Could those face shields help? It’s been flaring my skin up terribly so I got one of these to try with instead.

I don't know, they'd help with the ears problem but because the psoriasis is scalp-wide, I don't know how well the back of the scalp would take to things around it. My hair would probably be protection, but...it's the itching. Like I'm wearing a padded headset right now, which is stopping my ears from any rubbing, but the top of my scalp is still itching like crazy. Without that padding it'd be impossible to wear and I spend most of my time "wearing it" with it around my neck instead atm.

Poor you, it sounds totally horrible .
Can't say I really like wearing a mask, but hopefully I'll get used to it eventually. I hope if you go to the shops, people will see you have skin issues and won't have a go at you for not wearing one.

You can buy visors which are like glasses rather than ones you wear with a strap around your head. They also fit around your own glasses so you can wear both. Also someone I work with has one which clips onto her glasses. I work in retail and see loads of glasses-wearers with these on instead of a mask/strappy visor 🙂 just google 'glasses visor' or something similar. But if it's not suitable then I wouldn't worry, you have a genuine reason for not wearing one.

...I can't even wear my glasses at the minute it's that bad, lol. It hasn't been this bad for a few years now, I have no idea what's triggered this. I suspect the dodgy heating in this place and the time of year has something to do with it. I go like...3 places at the minute right now though, the garage up the road (where they don't give me trouble), the building CMHT are based in (where they don't give me trouble either), and the GP surgery. Where apparently they won't give me trouble about it either.

Still feels dodgy going outside though.

Is the UK still under lockdown? The news media here always makes it sounds like we are all dying here in the states and everyone else is doing just perfectly fine. I mean they do mention some countries have some virus issues, but not as bad as the US. I know the virus is serious, I've had family that has gotten it and they were very, very ill.

It’s a mess here. The UK is 4 countries. 2, Wales and Scotland have lockdowns. England has a North South divide with different bits having different restrictions. Folk largely haven’t got a clue whether they are doing the right or the wrong thing. It’s not great, it has potential to turn bad, but seems to be doing it much slower than earlier in the year...

Scotland is open, we're just not allowed in houses we can still socialise in certain places (pubs, restaurants). We also have the rule of 6 however I think that's UK wide, two households only allowed to meet. Our schools are also open.

You can get ones that clip to your glasses if that would be easier?
