COVID-19 Coronavirus

Is the UK still under lockdown? The news media here always makes it sounds like we are all dying here in the states and everyone else is doing just perfectly fine. I mean they do mention some countries have some virus issues, but not as bad as the US. I know the virus is serious, I've had family that has gotten it and they were very, very ill.
We're not in total lockdown like we were in the spring, but quite a few cities/large areas have restrictions on people meeting, gathering sizes, curfews etc. Not sure about elsewhere in Europe, but I think most places have some restrictions in some places. We get the impression that the US isn't doing too well in slowing the spread and preventing deaths, but it's difficult to be sure how things really are as the US is so big.

Yes here in the North West of England we have rapidly increasing cases (about 300 cases per 100,000 people this week) and a local semi-lockdown with no socially visiting at home or meeting up with anyone in public places outside your immediate household or support bubble... and pubs and restaurants closing at 10pm across the UK... but schools, universities, gyms and shops are still open but subject to social distancing, reduced capacity, contact tracing and mask wearing restrictions. The restrictions keep tightening just ever-so-slightly and for just-a-bit-wider geographical area week by week which is confusing for some people...

I think some states have been better at slowing the spread of the virus than others. But my state of Indiana has a 4.4% positivity rate for this week which is lower than some surrounding states. The problem is that there is so many ways to show what the numbers are and that can make it rather confusing. My family is trying to be careful, but we still are visiting relatives in the area so there is risk from getting it or giving the virus.

Numbers have been going up since schools have started and some are now just starting to go in person. Plus the colleges are going back now. The spread in the colleges have been really bad. A bunch of them have been locking down some of the dorms. They also have be suspending kids that break the rules.

I'm looking forward to when we can get out an about without masks, but that seems so far away....

I vote fake news. The debate went terribly. He can prevent further collateral damage by having a legitimate reason to hide away for a fortnight. He then comes back a hero having beaten the virus that would certainly have killed “sleepy Joe”.

I just said the same thing to OH!

Does anyone know if we still need to wash everything we buy?

I still am but I think its just a "normal" routine for me now. I've stopped washing out my shopping bags though as seemed a bit pointless to clean them, when all the shopping that goes in them I wash down anyway.

My local NHS trust is putting a daily update up about covid now. I think it was 20 patients yesterday & most of them had been admitted this week so numbers are creeping up now.

I've had two friends test positive this week too ☹

The part that I don't understand is why the daily deaths are those that died of ANY CAUSE but tested positive for Covid within 28 days before death.

So, the cause of death may or may not have been Covid or it may well be that some, or all, had terminal illness and would have passed away anyway.

Makes no sense as to why they are classed as Covid deaths.

My family stopped but I've still been nervous to touch the items. My extended family don't either.

I just don't know how to feel about it as there's for and against from experts when I google it x.x

I'm sorry about your friends. One of mine tested positive too. She seems fine though.

I still don't understand why they do this. I suppose within 28 days is better than adding people that died months ago of it/with it. It still isn't a true reflection of how many people have sadly died because of covid-19.

My brother doesn't, which really gets to me now he's living back here. I have to remind him not to touch anything until he's washed his hands too when he comes in but he often forgets & I then have to go around and clean everything he has touched. He doesn't seem to understand how my anxiety works & thinks its a joke.

My friends seem ok with it, thankfully. I've known of people who have had it but with it being two of my closest friends (from two seperate friendship groups) it seems so much closer ☹

I actually can't believe how many thousands of positive cases went "missing".

At least part of the reason for reporting the deaths is, the confirmed cases are being reported too - the deaths reflect a percentage of those cases, whether Covid was what killed them, or whether it was simply a factor in the deaths. For those people already terminal, they may have died anyway but Covid was the straw that broke the camels back.

Diid I see the news right? 22900 confirmed cases in 24hrs?

Yes but some date back to end of Sept. I've seen the updated list on a grid where it added the missing cases to the day they should have been reported. It made better reading as didn't have the massive jump to nearly 23000 cases in one day but can't find it now!

The sudden spike is from a backlog of confirmed cases that were not added when they should have been due to an IT glitch but it means that numbers have one up gradually more quickly over the last week or two than thought. We have to see how the next few days pan out.
Even if everybody is careful, it takes a few weeks for numbers to level out before coming down. :(

I know I have an unpopular opinion here but I wish they'd close the schools temporarily again, it does seem this spike started with schools opening 🤦‍♀️

Well, found out this morning that my younger sister (who is in the Philippines) tested positive for Covid-19. She has a direct contact to a colleague who tested positive so she needed to get the swab test. She doesn't have much symptoms apart from she can't smell (although she said she is currently suffering from sinusitis). She is feeling fine otherwise. She lives with my 2 cousins in our house in Manila. So they have to quarantine for 2 weeks as well. Our town officials has talked to my sister and told her they will monitor her condition daily for two weeks. Then hopefully when she gets the next test it'll be negative. 🤞 Hoping her condition doesn't get worse though. 🙏 My parents will send some groceries to her to add to their stocks.

Did they publicise when this coronavirus briefing was going to be on? Just turned TV on to find it happening.

this morning was the medical officers

I live in a Medium area but work in a High area with lots of people around me that cannot be helped. I do get nervous going back and forth but I work for a public authority now. Tough but that's the way of the world right now.

Apparently boris to address the nation at 5pm, circuit breaker do we think? Half term is next week 🤷‍♀️

Half term in Leicester is this week. Mind you we have never really come out of lockdown so who knows...

I think a nation wide circuit breaker would be a good idea, hospitals are pretty full in South Yorkshire apparently 🤦‍♀️ we're tier 2 though still not tier 3 yet think there's only Manchester that's that bad?

The thought is the announcement will be Manchester being in tier 3 or that's what it says on the radio times site

I'm all for a circuit breaker here in Liverpool, they closed the gyms and stopped us seeing family already, I'm currently self isolating because my phone pinged a possible covid exposure on the train during an "essential journey" to work for a uni lab class that only 5/40 students were able to attend last week, bring it on a complete lockdown, they already took away the fun stuff while making us risk death commuting in to educate absent students who are all too scared to attend or self isolating or have covid too!

Hope everyone in Manchester is OK 💖 I don't think another short lockdown at this point would be terribly unreasonable though but I may have an unpopular opinion there. Lockdown is mentally tough but so is anxiety about my children being in school. If I didn't like the school so much I'd have pulled them out to home Ed by now but they are happy there and their mental health is important too 💖

I think in Liverpool we reached the point where so many people are self isolating now at any one time that its pretty impossible and pointless to continue trying to keep things going as normal for the few that aren't...

Our local secondary school has two full year groups closed due to multiple positive covid cases, as well as close proximity students in each year group, it's a mess but I pass these supposedly isolating students in the street walking to my daughters school 🤦‍♀️ our schools had positive parents, it's the parents whoo don't give space annd cram up your bum walking in and out of the gates, it's all a bit worrying.

Here in "covid central" in Liverpool our uni is pretty much constantly 20% attendance or less and many students are angry at being asked to attend, anyone who works in a school or care setting or who has 2 or 3 kids in school or nursery is pretty much routinely having to stay home for a week or 10 days every other week or so, and having to get themselves and their family tested every couple of weeks... so many postal workers are off sick the post stopped being delivered regularly a week ago, the postman told me they have parcels piling up in 6ft high heaps with nobody to sort and deliver it, even schools with few cases amongst the kids are sending kids home because the teachers are self isolating... I think here its really time to stop pretending and let us all stay home and stay safe and have a nice comfy pyjama fortnight or month where we know what's going on at least!
