Mclayton
Junior Guinea Pig
Hi. Can someone tell me please, how long Metacam is ok once opened? I've took Squeak off it now, & still have half a bottle left. Thank you
I threw the box away, as I thought I was going to use it all. Stupid me. Haven't looked at the actual bottle. Another question please, as you are brilliant. What does the clucking sound mean? Squeak does it quite a bit. I'm still new to all this remember. Only had them since early November. It is scary rescuing animals you've never owned before, but I needed to help them. I'm a hamster specialist really.I think it’s 6 months from memory. It should say on the packaging though

Oh right. Its just a cluck sound. Looked it up online, & it says its when they are content with life. He is a happy piggie. I obviously know the rumble, & wheeking. He fell asleep in the pen tonight with his eyes closed. Thats a very safe feeling guinea pig. SurelyIf you are planning on giving Squeak metacam again, then the bottle you have is absolutely fine given he has only just got it.
The issue with sounds is that one persons written description does not necessarily match the other persons perception. I can’t think what you might mean by ‘clucking’. If you want to post a video of it, then that can shed some light
The other issue with sounds is that they are always context and body language based - so in one situation a sound can mean one thing, in another it can mean a different thing.

I'm doing something right then. I do question if I'm doing my best with themIf they fall asleep with their eyes closed, then yes they feel very secure
With anxiety, comes alot of negativityIf they fall asleep with their eyes closed, then yes they feel very secure
Absolutely, yes. Thank you for understanding. I've spent 100s on Squeak. They mean everything to me.You are doing well with them! You care and want what is best for them.
I struggle with anxiety and low moods also so i know how you feel. For me though, my animals are the things that pulls me out of any anxious feelings and give me clarity.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Means alot ❤From all I have seen from you, you are a very caring person and I am sure your pigs are more than spoilt.
I’ve been looking after guinea pigs for over a decade and still find myself coming here for advice. No question is a wrong question x
Had results from the urine culture. There is a small amount of bacteria that is resistant to Baytril. I'm really worried now, as the vet has suggested Doxycycline, & she said it causes side effects. But as Squeak is ok right now, she says see how he goes over the next few weeks. I really thought he was going to be ok. Just so upset. I don't want to give him stuff that will make him poorly, as I spend many hours at work, & can't get time off to care for himYou are doing well with them! You care and want what is best for them.

As someone who suffers with anxiety myself I am going to say please try not to overthink this. Wait and see how he goes. If he does need doxycycline, he may suffer no side effects at all. I have had piggies on it and they have been fine. At worst he may need some support feeding if his appetite drops and his weight drops (if you weigh at the same time once a day that is how you tell). By support feeding I do not mean total syringe feeding. He may just need a top up. That is all mine have ever needed. And top ups are given at times that work for you so that you don't need to take any time off work. But he may not need any support at all. That is just all speculation at the moment. Just for today focus on today. If he does need to go onto doxy then that will be by agreement with you and the vet. And he may suffer no side effects at all. Just like us humans - there is a list of potential side effects to all medication. Some people will not suffer any, others may suffer some of them. But thinking about it in advance is not going to change the fact that you won't know unless he starts the treatment.Had results from the urine culture. What do you class as top ups? & would i need a probiotic?Thank you very much
Well he loves his pellets, so it will be them crushed up then. I don't have any critical care. He spent a month on Baytril with no probiotic. He was fine. What probiotic should I buy then, if needed?A top up can be just putting a bowl of critical care or mushed pellets in the cage (which can sometimes be tricky if the cage mate will eat it!) or removing him from the cage a couple of times a day (morning and evening for example) so he can eat critical care/mushed pellets unhindered just as a boost for fibre intake. Sometimes an actual syringe feed might be needed as a top up a couple of times a day but it’s not as full on as proper syringe feeding round the clock.
Yes a probiotic or poop soup would be useful

What puzzles me,,, why the vet told me to see how he gets on over next few weeks, knowing he has bacteria in his wee. In that time, surely the bacteria will be worse. I'm so fed up with all this. Its depressing me. Poor SqueakBaytril is usually well tolerated so not needing a probiotic with that is not unexpected.
I tend to use Pro c or Fibreplex (prefer Fibreplex)

Is this what you mean? Will this last the whole course of antibiotics? That’s a question for you to ask the vet. It may not be high enough levels or the type of bacteria may not be concerning enough - we can only make assumptions.
I've read i have to wait 1-2 hours after antibiotic dose, before giving poop soup. How can I guarantee Bubble doing fresh poos after in that time frame. But then again, they are pooing all the time. Would picking the poos out the playpen be ok, rather than a box, as I'm already sitting here with them, & will see Bubble doing poosYes that is the one.
You only use a little bit at each dose of antibiotic.
You can also use poop soup (as well as a commercial probiotic) which is free and very beneficial!
Put Squeaks’s companion in a box, feed him his favourite snack and wait for a few poops to be produced. Immediately put the poops in water within five minutes of being produced. Soak them for around 10 minutes, and then syringe the water to Squeaks. This will help replace gut bacteria depleted by antibiotics by directly replacing the gut micro biome from his healthy companion

Will only be able get fresh poos when they are out in their pen in the evening. Yes, I will get the fibreplex then as well. I just want to prepare, as the bacteria will not go away without treatment I suppose. I just think the vet is prolonging it by a couple of weeksTo add, you can give poop soup several times a day so you could give a commercial probiotic after each antibiotic dose and give poop soup after the commercial probiotic
