Mclayton
Junior Guinea Pig
He's had x ray in December, a scan in February, no crystals in his wee, He's clear, so can't be a stoneI’ve just listened to the video. My Percy made these noises when he peed with his bladder stone.

Was he definitely peeing when he was making those noises? To me they sound like chatty piggy noises rather than painful squeaks
I've uploaded another video to YouTube from last night. He's in the playpen. I don't know how you get it on here though. I'm rubbish at this kind of thingI can't find any squeaky demo videos on the internet - it's just people waffling on!
@Mclayton I'll tell you - when George squeaks with his stone I hear him when I'm in the next room and it makes me feel sad for him. But when he squeaked with his UTI last year you could hear him right upstairs - and we've got 3 floors.
Pigs can pick up a bit on anxiety - they get worried about things. IC is a genuine condition and it is thought to be stress related (there might also be a genetic element, trigger foods etc). But usually posters whose pigs have IC are not wondering whether the sound is pain or not - those pigs cry, and often loudly. Your piggies are looking happy - even if they're only happy between pees as long as their pees aren't every half hour day and night (poor Georgie with his UTI) they're doing OK. My best advice would be to take vids until you get something that you feel clearly represents your concerns and then send it to the vet (they often don't 'perform' at the vets) and see what they say. And by all means post onto this thread too - we'll catch it.
The problem with Anxiety is it makes you hyper-vigilant and you feel like you have to do something Right Now. It's a very painful sense of urgency that affects your judgement. And yes, it is the voice of experience. It's not nice lovey - it's a horrible burden to carry. But you did the right thing getting them to the vets and they're having some sort of treatment - maybe for a stubborn (if relatively mild) UTI or maybe they're just picking up poop bacteria in the pee puddle with the test. I don't know how likely that is - you can ask them. But nothing jumps out at me in that video as urgent.
Generally speaking, if 2 or 3 days on an AB don't make a difference to symptoms either it's a resistant bug or not a bacterial problem at all.

I was sitting by the playpen, & there was a wee after he moved. He's right up against the side of the pen. This morning, he's full of beans, running around his cage with excitement at breakfast. Tonight, I'm going to move the pen so they can't see me watching them. Maybe I'm making them nervous with my anxietyI’ve just listened to the playpen one. Were you close enough to know he was actually urinating at that time?
Because on the video i can’t see the piggies, as the viewer you are going on sound alone and it sounds a bit annoyed maybe. it’s the kind of sound I get from mine if the other is invading their personal space!
All you can do is talk to your vet
I rang out of hours vets last night, & they said he's already at the top end of dosage for his weight. I've split to dose. 0.2mls just, & 0.2mls 12 hours later. He was given this dosage twice a day when all this started in DecemberOk. The noise in the playpen could well be pain but his metacam dose isn’t very much really for his weight (as you are seeing other members are giving double the amount for similarly weighing piggies). As we said it is a sliding scale depending on clinical need. Yes their weight does need to be taken into consideration but there are options if he is still in pain.
Antibiotics start to work within a couple of days hit that doesn’t mean that the symptoms immediately disappear. You need to get through the whole course.

Can antibiotics colour the wee? Its gone orange. I know the oxidation process, but not seen it orange beforeIf they don’t think they can do more, then there is nothing more you can do.

She isn't a exotic vet, but owns guinea pigs so has alot of experience. I can't afford to see an exotic vet. I've already paid out over £600. I've had to sell stuff to help find his care. I just never expected this to be as ongoing as it is. He had a x ray in December, a scan last month, & had his urine checked twice for calcium crystals. He's all clear. So, surely no stones@Mclayton i’m so sorry to hear what you and your baby are going through right now. my girl della had a stone flushed when she was just 13 weeks old and has had a number of utis since, its so hard seeing your little one in pain with nothing you can really do except wait for the pain meds and AB course to do its thing. i agree with the other comments about it being a low amount of metacam a day, my girl has always been put on slightly less (she weighs less though) but always twice a day, definitely go back to your vet and see what they think. is your vet knowledgeable with guinea pigs do you know? if you know they aren’t, i would definitely look at swapping over to another vet, someone who has more experience with piggies. please keep us updated on your little man, i have everything crossed for a speedy, pain-free as possible recovery. if you have any questions i am not a professional but happy to share my experiences with della x
I’m so sorry your piggy is unwell. It’s awful watching them in pain. I was clarifying the noise was the same as a piggy with bladder issues. He's had x ray in December, a scan in February, no crystals in his wee, He's clear, so can't be a stone
I'm waiting for a call back from my vet. Will suggest upping his meds to 0.4mls twice a day, instead of once. Squesk is 1.4kgI’m so sorry your piggy is unwell. It’s awful watching them in pain. I was clarifying the noise was the same as a piggy with bladder issues.
Piggies can definitely have pain meds twice a day. Some vets just aren’t that up to date on guinea pigs.
Obviously no one on this forum can tell you to go against what a vet has told you. But we can give you examples of what other vets have prescribed our piggies.
I went to my normal vets and was prescribed 0.3ml of loxicom for a 1.2kg pig ONCE a day.
I then went to see the guinea pig specialist at the Cat and Rabbit clinic and he was prescribed 0.4ml of loxicom TWICE a day.
Yes some antibiotics do change the colour of their wee. After my piggy was on ABs for about 6 weeks he had bright yellow wee for months after stopping them. He did see a vet about it and they were not worried.
UPDATE on Squeak. Had vet call back. His pain relief has been increased to 0.3mls twice a day. If no improvement by next Wednesday when antibiotics end, a culture will be sent off to the lab. He will continue on pain relief if no better. I'm hoping he goes ok now, with the increase. Thank you all for your help & adviceI’m so sorry your piggy is unwell. It’s awful watching them in pain. Can I ask an important question please. Few weeks back, mites were suspended on my other pig Bubble, so obviously had to treat Squeak as well. Treatment has worked, but need a 2nd dose tomorrow. Would Squeak be OK having the anti mite spot on, with been on Baytril & Metacam? ThanksI believe some can (I know they can in humans), food can also
Will be be able to have anti mite spot on (Ivermectin), while on antibiotics & pain relief? Both my piggies are due their 2nd dose tomorrow. Its done the trick.UPDATE on Squeak. Had vet call back. I forgot to ask earlieri don’t recall any reasons why they can’t have it but you should check with your vet if you are unsure
I’d double check to be on theBeen advised not to use it, while these ongoing issues with Squeak continue. They seem fine though, now.i don’t recall any reasons why they can’t have it but you should check with your vet if you are unsure
Do you know roughly, how long it takes gor metacam twice a day to ease pain? Squeak has been on 1 dose daily since last Thursday, but only been taking it twice a day for 2 days. He's still doing squeaky wees
He's been quiet all day, but started again this past hour or so. Probably because he's due pain relief again in half hourIt doesn’t take long to work - a few hours.
Taken earlier today. Very cute!It doesn’t take long to work - a few hours.

They suspect I.C now, & since been on metacam twice daily, his squeaks have stoppedi see! i didn’t realise exotic vets where more expensive where you are, sorry! yes my girl has cost us well over a grand i recon with all her appointments and we’ve not even had her a year.. its hard but i will always find the money for my babies! that does sound very odd that he's had all of these done and no sign of stones.. did they do multiple shots in different places or was it just one do you know? my vet said that sometimes they can be hidden, hence why they did multiple xrays of della in different positions to make sure nothing would be missed.

Yes. She rang me the other afternoon. He's had a couple of great days! He's a happy boy really. His ABs finish Wednesday, so urine checked after to see if infection gone, but staying on metacam for a while longerHave you spoken to the vet again then?
