Womble and the plum fairy. :)

Hi all, just phoned the vet.
My boy is only just coming around from the anaesthetic and has just gone back to the small mammal room to recover.
I know what he's like, he'll be like an angry little teddy bear. Adorable but furious looking. All is set to pick him up at 4:30. The anaesthetic hurdle has been jumped and cleared, which was my first worry. Let's try and jump and clear the infection hurdle next. :)

Thinking of you. So glad he’s out of surgery, fingers crossed for a smooth recovery.
I know exactly how you must be feeling as I’ve just recently come through it too. The guilt is the worst isn’t it. But I can safely say that now I’m well and truly through the other end it’s very much worth it.

Thank you :)

Glad he’s come through the op well.
With all the attentive love & care he’ll get from you I’m sure Womble will be right as rain in no time.

We're heading home with our boy now.
The vet said she got a lot of dirty looks and attitude but she didn't take it personally. 😂 That's my boy!

He was moving around a bit in his crate and she says he's eaten. She's given him some Meticam. So we dont need to give him anymore of that. But we will have to give him some Baytrail. He's on Baytrail and Metacam for 5 days.

In regards to his medicine.
Anyone have any suggestions of how to catch a guinea with stitches on his under carriage without stressing him/hurting him.

I think I will try to get him in a tunnel and pick it up.

I’m glad he is doing well. Yes herding him into a carrier is the best and safest way.
I am going to do the same to get Popcorn’s eye drops in. They have a fleece one entrance hidey, so in am going to herd him into that and then turn him round while he is inside the hidey and administer the drops - perhaps you have something similar you can try

I could give him the hay pigs hidey early and put him in that. :)

I used a tunnel or a snuggle pouch to catch mine.
Use a towel to wrap Womble up in when giving him his meds. A vet called it a guinea pig burrito!
Baytril is not nice (apparently) so I gave that first followed by the Metacam which most piggies like.
A suitable bribe also helps, something like a small chunk of cucumber or a sprig of dill.
Good luck.

Glad Womble is home safely

Our previous vet told us to put a little bit of Ribena cordial to disguise the taste of the Baytrail. I think the Metacam tastes sweet to them because Pinto gulped it down and tried to chew on the syringe when she got it. But all guineas go gak! at the Baytrail even with a little drop of Ribena. The vet said not too much, I think because it's quite sugary.

Ah yes I am well versed in the guinea burrito.

Is Popcorn on the Ithmal? I think that's what it was called. Pinto was the same.

Yes, Isathal.

You can dilute baytril with a bit of something nicer tasting but you then just increase the amount you have to syringe into him. Luna the rabbit was on baytril a month ago for a suspected respiratory infection (which actually wasn’t and turned out she had a much rarer illness which explains why she didn’t get completely better!) and it was just so much easier to just get the dose into her and then give her some nice herbs to make her forget the nasty baytril taste

Fair enough. I will try both methods and see which suits him.

You would never think he's been in surgery. He's sitting in his hay eating around himself as usual. He's his usual self and giving us attitude and when we opened the crate. He looked up like "what?" and started nibbling the hay in his crate whilst we thought about how to get him out and administer the antibiotics without his bucking like a broncho. 😅

Aw, lovely, so glad Womble is back home and eating well x

Hi all,

Some of Womble's poohs I have got little tails on them.
Pictures of pooh below. - Don't look if you're eating :))
He's still eating and drinking and everything.
I know he's just had surgery and it may be difficult for him to pooh for a bit as the area is next to his bottom.
When do you think it is a concern?
Should I contact the out of hours vet?
