Womble and the plum fairy. :)

I've had another 9 neutered boars before that, going back to the 80ies with my very first own piggy being a neutered peru boar.
Our first family piggies were all perus; that is why I have such a soft spot for them although I love all my piggies, whatever the breed or often breed mix. they have all got their individual personality. I have some 'strings' of piggies down several generations that keep some happy memories alive although I am careful never to get a spitting look-alike; that would be unfair emotional baggage and expectations for the successor. While I also love abys very much (they are either bursting with abitude or are very gentle), I also love grumpy teddies and white-nosed ginger cresteds. Cresteds are on the whole a good breed for a group; they are the most 'down to earth and get on with it' piggies in my experience - and when you want to build up a group, NOT having a firework of all big personalities is a distinct advantage!

You can find some of the predecessors of my Carys and other piggies in my Tribe thread: Wiebke's Tribe - Sows and the City Boars
It's interesting to hear about the different breeds/persoanlities from someone who has had first hand experience with them.

I read your tribe thread and you have definitely had some characters in your herd.

I understand how you feel about not getting guinea pigs that are too similar in looks to others as you don't want to unwittingly force your expectations of behaviour on them.

Thank you for telling me all your experiences. It's good to share and learn from each other. Keeping guinea pigs, despite my animal care background has been an excellent learning experience and even though I have kept them for a while I am still learning all the time, from all sorts of different people.

It has made me appreciate the value of animals more than I ever did.

Just seeing the different personalities shine through and getting to know each individual is such a pleasure.

The rescue nearest to me is The potteries, I'm going to try support them.

I fundraise for both TEAS sanctuary and The Potteries with my baking stalls - sadly none this year. Normally I have would have a manic November baking flat out for two weeks and selling my Swiss and German Christmas biscuits at both rescues' Christmas events. I hope that you can come to one of the Potteries events next year. The Christmas event should in any case happen at a time when everybody who needs it (me included) has had their vaccine. There's usually quite a number of forum members coming; you should enjoy it!

TEAS and the Potteries are the two rescues I have adopted most from in the last years; most of my husboars have come from one or the other place. At the moment, I have got 5 TEAS piggies (Mererid and Morwenna; Teggy, Barri and Macsen) and 5 Potteries adoptees (Nye and Pioden; Dylan and Begw and Dryw).

This pandemic is a pain! (Understatement I know) it's changed everything. The way I teach, my exercise regime, the Liverpool 5k Santa dash and all the other 5ks I used to take part in, seeing my family and eating meals out. Even my wedding got cancelled!

It's made me appreciate things a lot more as well but I wish I go do all these fun things you're talking about.

I know everyone wants to get back to normal but I have seen people not being sensible and making it difficult for key workers like me to feel safer going to work.

On a more optimistic note. I love cake! Would love to eat those delicious cakes you're talking about. 😍

I have a friend that lives in SOT.
In fact she lives in Kidsgrove, so I would make a day of it.
I live about an hour away by car.

Do boars have to be neutered ? Havea pair of brothers now about 7-8 months old now. They get on great, no probs at all, ocassional rumble strutting but thats it. Should they be neuteured?

I'm neutering Womble because he's going in with girls. He was with his friend Stripe who was a boar, you don't have to neuter if he's with a boar but in all honesty I wish I had neutered them both sooner because if one of them passes away you cannot be sure they will get on with another boar.
It's easier to put him with a girl because that's the way it is in nature.

It's purely a choice. If they're happy together, there's no real need to neuter, but think of the future. Because my partner thought this situation wouldn't happen when I suggested we neuter the boys, but it did and here we are. I would have felt a lot less anxious if Womble had be neutered at 8 months old- year old and not at 3-4 years old.

It's a 1 1/2 hours drive from here. But as my hub is in a higher risk category for complications we have to be extra careful re. indoors spaces with lots of people around so no events for me until there is a vaccine. As you are saying - too many people are not considering who they are putting at risk just because they themselves aren't. It takes only one virus after all. The best we can do is stay out of the way as much as possible, unfortunately.

Very sorry about your wedding. You will find that it will be a lot more special when you finally have it because it means even more to you. What counts when the chips are down is the commitment; not the circumstances.
I had to organise my own wedding around my dad's terminal cancer in basically two weeks in a foreign country in a foreign language right in the middle of the 9/11 mayhem because it was my dad's biggest wish to see me safely married even if he wasn't fit to attend himself - and we were not sure whether he would be still alive as he'd just had another failed therapy. But for all of that, it was still one of the nicest weddings because everybody made an effort - my dad did make it through that crisis (he actually lived for another year) and even the forecast storm didn't break until late in the evening...

Anyway, I can't see my own family this year and have missed my mum's 80th birthday in Switzerland plus a couple of major health crises. :(

I think SOT itself is in tier 3. Where I work in Liverpool has gone down to tier 2 and that's due to the mass testing that was encouraged and set up by the army/city council -who I work for in their adult learning service.
So it can be done. 🙂

Wow, that's difficult circumstances for your wedding, I'm glad it all worked out for you in the end and you had a special day.
We are having a tiny ceremony just us and two people in December, just to be married and having a big party with another (not legal) ceremony later on.

I hope things work out for you and you can go visit your mum and you get better soon.

Love seeing your guineas!

It's mostly my husband and my mother whose health is a problem - and unfortunately a clashing one with them being in different countries. :(

I hope that you will enjoy your intimate ceremony; it also has some great perks as it is much more about you as a couple in that moment - and you have got a lot less to worry about and can enjoy it so much more. I made that experience at my own impromptu wedding. :tu:

Thank you for your kind words.
I hope your mum and your husband feel better soon. It's a shame that no one can travel due to the pandemic.
Keep safe and well - you and your family. 🍀😊

I'm panicking a bit because Womble's neutering is on Friday and I saw on a guinea pig fb group that someone took their guinea to get 'sterilized' as they put it and they never came back. 😢😢😢 I don't want anything to happen to my boy and I'm really anxious.

Take a deep breath, I know exactly how you‘re feeling - I was exactly the same before we got our 2 boys neutered. Could barely sleep the night before! I know I can’t take your anxiety away but I can tell you that both our boys came back home like nothing had happened. Eating, pooping, and rumbling like always. Maybe that helps a little bit to calm your nerves. All our paws and fingers are crossed for Womble‘s little operation! Hope everything goes well 💕

Thank you for your reassurance. I could have done without seeing that too close to his surgery because I was already psyching myself out without it to be honest.

I feel bad for the lady who lost her pig, apparently he was fine through the surgery, he was up and about and eating, they left him a few minutes and when they came back and he had passed away.

It is a horrible thought.
My fiancé says the reason I'm reticent to get Womble done is that he too precious to me that I cannot bear the thought of something happening to him but also I don't care how small the risk that I love him so much I don't want to out him under any risk.

Hope all goes well on Friday.
I’ve had 2 boars neutered, both recovered well.
Micah developed a scrotal abscess after his op but it was quickly and easily dealt with.
He’s now a very happy boy with 2 wives.
Will be keeping you in my thoughts

Good luck Womble for your visit to the sugar plum fairy x
Try not to worry, think about how happy he will be in 6 weeks time 😁

Thank you for telling me about your experience. I do tend to worry a lot.

That’s normal.
We all worry if one of our piggies have surgery.
Here’s a couple of pictures of Micah.
One just after his surgery and one from about 4 weeks later when he was living next to his future wives
You can see the difference

I am wondering how I can make everything comfortable for his recovery as possible. I'm going to put a bath mat on top of the fleece and change it every day so he is ok and not sleeping in his own waste too much, because he tends to sleep in one place.

I changed the fleece and vet bed/mats etc daily as my Jasper is a big peepee pants, he’s done great and it’s now been over three weeks since his with no issues! (Touch wood!) Just try and keep his cage extra dry and clean for the first week or two and sure he’ll be fine! :hug:We’re all here if you need to stress or worry to though!

I totally understand your anxiety about it like I said before, I was a bit of a stressy-mess leading up to and on the day of his surgery! But I’ve now had 5 neutered boars, one neutered chinchilla and one rat with no issues with neutering surgery.
I sadly lost my ratty Oscar on the day of surgery after complications with his chewing on the stitches and bleeding while at the vets afterwards, but he had other issues as well as the testicular tumour that he was having surgery for, so the odds are very high it will all go well! xx

Thank you so much. I cried when I handed him over. I was training to be a vet for a while so I have an acute idea of everything that can go wrong. :( collected Stripes ashes today too. Hoping little Stripe watches over his brother. I feel so guilty for putting him through this. I know I should not but I do. Thank you for all your kind thoughts.
