Those braids I do are called kumihimo, and they're really easy to pick up even if you've never done them before. The ones in that photo are "flat" (actually a truncated pyramid shape) but there's round braids that are even easier.

I've used craft thread, embroidery thread, perle cotton, knotting thread, wool, waxed cotton, shambala. If it's thread, you can use it. And they're a great distraction for me.
