Dental Potential Dental Issue

Simon is off, for two weeks, from a week tomorrow, so get in quickly.
He’s been a bit better this evening, luckily. If he’s worse tomorrow, I’ll be calling then. He’s definitely been more active in the past hour. I’m not sure if the sudden change in temperature might have had something to do with it as he was feeling quite cold earlier despite being in his bed.

Hope Little is feeling better tomorrow x

Little has been doing better since I last posted. He was up eating at around 3am and has been eating today. He’s not eating as much as normal, but nothing to be concerned about. His poos have gotten really bad again, so he may have had tummy ache on top of being cold. Had a feel at his neck and I can’t feel any sign of his abscess coming back. He gave us such a fright yesterday when he wouldn’t eat much until into the late afternoon :( I had literally been sat beside the cage all day and hadn’t seen him at all. But thankfully, I think it was a blip and he’s okay :)

Keep an eye on his weight hoping he’s feeling better now x

I will be doing, thanks. I think he’s okay overall. He kept asking for veg all yesterday evening, even after he’d had some. I’m really not sure what caused him to not eat most of the day, could have been the sudden coldness, his impaction, or because now he’s blind in both eyes. I suppose there’s a few things that could have contributed to why he just wanted to sleep all day. I’m still keeping an eye on him, but yesterday I was happy with how much he was eating :) I’m so relieved it seems to have been nothing but a false alarm.

Aw so glad it was just a blip! Us dental piggie slaves have to be vigilant don’t we x

Update:
Little hasn’t been very good :( his poos are really bad and causing him problems. I think it’s putting him off eating. I’m having to get browny-yellow mush out of his bum every couple of hours or so.
Yesterday, he was eating okay but only after I would sort his bum out. I would do that, then quickly put a bit of fresh hay by him which he’d eat some of before going back to sleep. Today he’s just not been fussed. He’s been having critical care, only as much as he will take on his own. He’s eaten some hay but not a great deal. I can’t tell if he’s being selective or not, though. We’re hoping that the critical care will sort his poos out so that they aren’t so bad, as then he should feel like eating. If he doesn’t feel like eating, we know it’s teeth or abscess. In about 2 weeks, Little is starting to be due an appointment anyway as it will have been 6 weeks since our last. So, we’ll push it forward if necessary and get the nearest appointment with Simon if Little isn’t showing improvement by Monday/Tuesday.

Debbie @furryfriends (TEAS) said that Simon and Kim are off from 6th to 20th July...🙁

Oh right, yeah my bad! He also told me this at the last appointment. It’s a tough one. The journey is really long and ideally we would have been waiting 8 weeks since the last appointment as we have two piggies who need to go.
Little’s poos have been an issue all his life, he’s no good with veg. But as he’s gotten older, they’ve just got worse and they definitely put him off his food. I feel like he’ll be okay if his poos get right, but obviously it’s hard to know. I feel like it’d be too soon to take him now, as he’s only been off veg for about 3 days but it’s worrying at the same time in case it is something else. His teeth seem okay, and I can’t feel for an abscess, but then I don’t know what I’m looking for. It’s a difficult journey in itself to get to Northampton from Barnsley, if it were me who could drive and had the car then I’d be off, but it’s not.

We are off to see Simon today, have an appointment at 1.30. We’re a bit pushed for time as we have to leave in less than an hour but it was the only appointment they had. Little doesn’t want to eat today and doesn’t want any critical care which is worrying. He hasn’t moved at all all night to my knowledge.
Fingers crossed it’s maybe his back teeth or something and not an abscess

Thank goodness you were able to get an appointment. Fingers crossed Simon can sort him xx

I know, even if Simon hadn’t been going away I would have definitely been making an appointment for today. Little’s got no interest in food at all, he just wants to sit in his hidey :(

Update:
Simon has seen Little. He said that he is pleased that his abscess hasn’t come back, and his teeth are okay. He checked his intensities, gut, kidneys, etc and said that he was completely fine. The only thing Simon thought it could be was a middle ear infection. Little has had a head tilt for about four months, around the same time he first became blind. Simon was watching Little walk around and thought he seemed a bit wobbly. So he suspects theres a middle ear infection and that it will be making him dizzy, disoriented, and causing him some pain so that could he why he’s not eating. He’s got antibiotics and Simon said we should notice a difference in Little in about 2/3 days, he’s also to be on 0.4ml of loxicom

It’s been very emotional here today. We’re hoping the outcome is one where Little is okay but we believe the issue is neurological. Simon said Little was in perfect health, it was only the head tilt that could have possibly been the problem. Little has only been declining in health, he doesn’t move from his bed at all, he refuses water and critical care or mashed nuggets. We got him on the floor for a run and put some readigrass out, it managed to tempt him a bit but he just kept moving it about with his nose rather than eating it. He decided he liked a strand and tried to eat it, but he gets it in and chews it but nothing happens and he has to pull it out of his mouth with his foot, if that makes sense. That’s what he’s been doing any time he’s attempted hay too. Like he gets a bit in his mouth and chews but he isn’t eating it, then he has to get it out of his mouth and it’s just wet with saliva and not chewed at all. We’ve been giving him a higher dose of metacam than Simon recommended - 0.4ml every 6 hours - in the hope that he’s just in pain but it’s not changing anything. He’s gone up to his water bottle but just been moving side to side around it with his nose and not putting his mouth on the spout, and also he doesn’t want anything we offer him from a syringe. It seems like he’s given up on life to be honest. I’m so devastated. We’re hoping it’s just an ear infection and the antibiotics start working soon, but then why can’t he chew anything? Simon said his teeth were perfect and there’s no abscess so nothing that can stop him chewing. We’ve been giving him as much syringe food as we can, but it isn’t a lot as he is totally refusing. I know we could be panicking for nothing, but we’re under the impression that Little will have to be PTS, or will pass away naturally, sometime in the near future :(

Update:
There’s been slight progress. Little has just emerged from his bed for the first time since today and yesterday. He managed to eat a couple of porridge oats and had a tiny bit of water. It wasn’t much overall, but he showed that he wanted to come and eat something and wanted to have a drink. It’s made us feel a lot better as we’ve (especially me, lol) spent most of the day crying over the thought that we may lose him.
We’re considering splitting the cage in half for a few days as Little is very wary of Peanut. Little is usually the dominant pig but since he recently lost his second eye and is now totally blind, and now his hearing may be off and his perception of everything may be off due to dizziness, Little is frightened of Peanut it seems. Peanut is a very intrusive guinea pig and likes to get in everyone’s business so he won’t leave Little in peace if Little does try and eat something. He likes to get in Littles face a lot. Peanut is what made little retreat back to his bed just now as he got a bit too near.
Earlier on after we had syringe-fed Little, we put him back in the cage. We have two hidey beds that are almost next to each other. Little went to his preferred hidey and thought he heard Peanut inside so didn’t go in. He made his way over to the other hidey and confidently went in only to be greeted with dominance behaviour as he was literally then nose to nose with Peanut, Little then sped to the other side of the cage into a third hidey in fear. It was absolutely awful. Splitting the cage may be for the best, just for a day or two. We don’t want to make this any harder on Little than it has to be and Peanut isn’t making it easy for him :(

Aw, just caught up with Little’s thread, I am so sorry Little is poorly, hoping he makes a full recovery soon. Keep up with the syringe feeds until he can manage better. I would split them too, if Peanut is being too in his face x

Thank you. We have a bit more hope than we did this morning/the early afternoon. We genuinely believed it was likely that we would lose him, but him coming out for a bit of something to eat/drink told us that he still has a bit more fight in him, even if it was only for five minutes. It probably hasn’t helped my emotions that it was one year ago today that we lost our beloved Honey, Little’s previous cagemate.
I’ve been reading past threads on ear infections, and on the whole it seems like it’s at the 72 hour mark of being on antibiotics where there’s a big improvement. Right now we’re on 51 hours since the first dosage so it’s tomorrow evening when we ideally need to be seeing an improvement. I think we are going to split the cages, it might give Little a bit more confidence.

We seemed to have turned a corner! I can’t believe we went from having to come to terms with the idea that he may not be around much longer to this. Little has just accepted syringe food :yahoo: ! He sat there and quite happily had a lot of it.

We’ve split the cage in half so that they’re in 2x2 each, we would’ve made up a second cage but don’t have enough correx. We’re thinking the separation will last 2 days at the most, ideally they will be put back together tomorrow but I don’t want to rush things if Little wants more time. Little instantly seemed content with his smaller, company-free cage. There’s a blanket over the divider so they can’t see each other, which is a shame as I think Peanut misses Little as he hasn’t been seeing much of him but Peanut will chew the bars like no tomorrow which makes his teeth snap off due to his dental disease making them weaker so it needs to be covered.
Little has eaten a couple of porridge oats, he’s had a sip of water and he’s been sat in the hay for about 10 minutes. Hopefully he’s been eating some.
I think when he came out of his bed, as I mentioned in the last update, he had started feeling better. Earlier, it seemed like he’d given up on life - refused everything we could offer him. But since he came out from his bed and had a bit of a munch and a drink, it just seems like he’s feeling better and is ready to plough on. Like I said, he took down his syringe food amazingly, and a lot of it too. I just can’t get over how sad and worried about him we were earlier, to now where I’m so proud of him and the progress he’s made in the last few hours. Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day for him!

Update:
Little has finished his course of antibiotics. Obviously, his head is still a little tilted as it has been since he went blind in his first eye but not as much as it was before the medication. Because the tilt was already present, we obviously didn’t notice it getting worse. Little is definitely back to his old self character wise however we’re still having issues. He’s being very selective eating his hay so doesn’t eat a great deal of it. He keeps opening his mouth and doing weird cheek movements like he has something stuck, even when he’s not eating. We’re still having to syringe him food to keep up his weight. He despises critical care so we’ve been giving him mashed nuggets almost the entire time which he likes.
We have an appointment booked with Simon on Monday for both boys. Peanut needs one of his extra teeth trimming. It’s funny how Little has 3 incisors and Peanut has 6, lol. Hopefully Simon is able to see what’s going on with Little. We’re hoping that his back teeth may have just grown from not eating hay for a while and that’s it’s as easy as that. At the last appointment, Simon couldn’t see a thing wrong with Little aside from the head tilt. If we’re still in the same position, then I’m not sure what’s wrong with the poor chap.

Are you there this coming Monday? Are you sure you're seeing Simon? He doesn't normally go in on a Monday, but I know he's going in for some guinea pig dentals, in the afternoon.

Yes and yes! We called and there were no appointments for next week but the receptionist said they were in contact with Simon about whether he’d be coming in on Monday. They called us yesterday at about 5/6pm to say that they had made an appointment for us with Simon at 4pm!

He really is amazing!

This morning Little’s mouth seemed kind of strange, like his tongue was in a weird place during the syringe feed. Anyway, we’ve got him out for another syringe feed and his chin is absolutely wet through. It’s a good job we’ve got the appointment for tomorrow as his teeth must need sorting!
We’ve just booked a few days away near the end of August as my mum has been feeling very depressed so we needed to give her something to look forward to and now I’m slightly regretting as Little may need close attention :(

Thank you! We had actually been looking on your website earlier as if Little still needs close attention, we will definitely be bringing him to you. Its 4 weeks until we will be going so there’s still time for him to recover. If I’m still worried about him a week before we go, we will get in contact with you about boarding :)
