Dental Potential Dental Issue

Yeah he does get impaction from time to time, the veg just turned all his poos terrible but he’s been okay since Friday and has been having veg. No impaction or dodgy poos!

I don’t have any local exotic vets unfortunately, the ones which aren’t local would use anaesthetic which Peanut doesn’t cope well with. He gets very ‘the lights are on but nobody’s home’, doesn’t move/poo/eat/drink. It’s awful. Ellie is even further away than that and I don’t believe she’s working right now. She cut Little’s incisors too short that time too. I know that if I were to go anywhere else, it wouldn’t be done perfectly, but I suppose better than nothing. Peanut’s tooth is so weird, in fact looking at all his front teeth they’re a bit dodgy. Mainly due to the actual dodgy one. I managed to get some photos.

The photo above looks like you can see both top incisors, but actually that’s just one! It’s like separated into three sections, it’s the strangest thing. I wish Simon weren’t so far away :(
It does look like it needs attention! It should be fairly simple to sort, but like you say, most vets are going to either mess them up, want to anaesthetise or both!

Yeah I feel like if I let anyone anaesthetise him to do it, they’d touch his back teeth and mess them up entirely. Simon managed to sort his back teeth about 9 months ago after a few trips. Peanut’s tooth is so messed up that I feel like no one but Simon would know what to do with it. Both pigs could do with seeing Simon so it would make the journey there warranted. I probably just need to figure out if it’s possible, how much it’d all cost and when. I’ve learnt my lesson not once but twice now that we don’t take chances with teeth, it’s Simon or no one. Each time I’ve given another vet a chance, it’s blown up in my face!

That's the problem, if they mess them up, you could still need to go to Simon and they have made the problem, so much worse.

I totally agree with you, I’ve had my fingers burnt twice now. It’s a shame how one incisor can mess up all the rest. I had the same problem with Bill, the only vet I know that did a really good job burring Bill’s incisor even was Jess at Dart Valley Vets at Brixham, she did a great job and angled them lovely but she’s in Devon so further away still from you 🙁

It’s just not worth the risk honestly. In my head, I think it’s an easy enough job and they’ll do what I ask but in reality, they won’t. When Ellie did Little’s teeth, I wanted her to sort his back teeth if needed but to leave his incisors alone because I know what can happen and then she touched his incisors and made his teeth too short. Then we were thinking the reason he still couldn’t eat properly was because incisors were too short to grab, it just prolonged Little’s suffering because we were waiting for his teeth to grow. Only when they did grow did we realise he still wasn’t right and went to Simon. I know it’s not worth risking it. It would be so much easier if we had a car though! Glad you have a decent vet close-ish to you for incisors, i wish we were in the same situation!

Aw, I know they all seem to cut the incisors so short and they don’t angle them so theres no sharpness even if they meet. Jess is a lovely vet but she admits her limitations, she has all the proper gags and everything but doesn’t get many dental piggies through her door. She’s excellent at incisors, but she had a look at Ted’s back teeth out of interest just to see and said Simon was the best option, she will fine down spurs but only fairly basic problems. She’s still 90 miles away from us so Simon has always been the better option, we have a car and don’t mind travelling with Ted, but she was alway there as a back up if Simon wasn’t around in case of emergencies. So sorry travels so difficult at the moment, is there anyone else you know who could take him for you?
Hope you get Little sorted soon x

That’s the best thing though, to have a vet who is fully aware of what they can and can’t do. Having a vet who thinks they know best with teeth can end in disaster, like you know. I could possibly ask my nan to take the pigs but she has a really bad knee so is struggling to drive anywhere at the moment nevermind over 2 hours. She usually has fluid removed from it and a steroid injection but she hasn’t been able to have it done due to the virus. Also I know she wouldn’t want to do it all if I wasn’t there with her. Other than her, there’s no one. I wouldn’t really trust any friends to drive the pigs there without me and I don’t particularly think they’d want to either. Even if it’s not the best thing, I think I’m going to wait a week or so and see how lockdown restrictions ease, it might make it easier on getting a lift there. It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t pay over £500 total last time we took Little, but that really broke the bank!

Oh gosh that is a lot of money! Of course you had the abscess and dental and meds, train etc it’s a lot of money. My OH sound like he has the same knee problem as your Gran, he has just has a steroid injection at the doctors last week, it’s definely a lot better than it was x

This is on the Gov.uk site.

Where people from different households need to use a vehicle at the same time, good ventilation (keeping the car windows open) and facing away from each other may help to reduce the risk of transmission. Where possible, consider seating arrangements to optimise distance between people in the vehicle.

Thank you for that. I know I probably shouldn’t but I feel guilty asking as it’s possible that I could have the virus and not show symptoms. It’s as though I’m asking them to risk their life for my Guinea pigs. I’ll have a chat with my Nan today and see what she thinks though.

Yep, total vet bill was £370 then there was everything else. I couldn’t believe how much it was. For her the steroid injection can be very hit or miss. Once it lasted for a few months and she was doing amazing, best she’s been in years. Then another she had barely lasted two weeks before the pain came back. They’ve been prescribing her pain killers over the phone right now but they don’t work at all!

Aw your poor Gran, feel for her x
This awful virus is making life so difficult for everyone, I know how you feel about the possibility of passing it on to someone close and not even knowing you have it, especially to your Gran I can understand that completely x

We are off to see Simon today. Setting off at half 2, appointment is at 5:10. My nan is driving me so it will take a lot less time than on a train!
Peanut doesn’t travel well at all, so I’m hoping that since Little is with him, he will be okay. Though, saying that Little only travels well if he’s sat on my knee! Whenever we generally go the vets with Little, if he hasn’t sat on my knee on the way there he shakes like a leaf when the vet sees him. Little just gets comfort from me, he loves cuddles and can be asleep in seconds with his eyes shut. Peanut, on the other hand, isn’t like that. He knows now that I’m his safe place, but he doesn’t find comfort in me much. So I’m thinking that he and Little will look after each other whilst we travel there. Perhaps Little will be able to convince Peanut to eat something, which he usually wouldn’t. We’ll see how it goes. Fingers crossed Simon can easily sort everything for them

I’ve got the appointments before you!😊

Aw, good luck for Peanut and Little x Hope it’s all goes well with Simon x

Got back at half 8 last night, I was absolutely drained and fell asleep at half nine!
Simon was very pleased with how Little was doing, he also filed his front tooth back. He said to bring Little back for his tooth filing every 6-8 weeks, if he can go longer then that’s fine but it should roughly be every 8 weeks. He had a feel at Little and said there’s no sign of the abscess having filled up again or anything too.
Then for Peanut, first Simon called him a monster of a Guinea pig, which I can definitely agree with (both in weight and temperament lol). He said that Peanut’s problem is quite common, I’ll probably phrase it all wrong but he said that his tooth has split at the pulp, so he essentially has extra teeth. He filed back the extra tooth that had grown down really long as well as fixed up his other incisors. He also said that Peanut’s back teeth at the right side are discoloured but should be nothing to worry about. He also said to bring Peanut the same time as when we bring Little.
So it could be the case that they both need incisors trims now every 6-8 weeks for the rest of their life. Overall though, it was good news all round!

Well on the whole that sounds pretty good. if you can judge it and take them both at the same time then that’s pretty doable. So glad Little’s nasty abscess has gone x Fancy called Peanut a monster! 😆

Yeah, we will definitely be taking them both at the same time as it’s quite a long trip. Little has been eating really well, he’s been curling round to go to sleep, he’s just been a happy chappy overall so I didn’t think it would have filled up. You can just tell he’s not in any pain anymore which I’m so glad about, bless him. Lol peanut definitely is a monster, it’s made me laugh though when he said that to me! I don’t know which way he meant it, whether it be because he’s a verrrrry fat lad (which we have Simon to thank for that as he arrived to us from Cavy Corner with dental issues that even they didn’t spot so he only weighed 800 grams and he was apparently 4 years old!), or if he meant it because he’s a stubborn wriggle bum who absolutely will not let anyone get near his piggy lips to look at his teeth ever. It really could have been either 🤣
Both boys are doing amazingly today, they were doing amazing yesterday as well after the appointment. Since it’s Simon we saw, i know i don’t have to worry about any problems creeping up or anything. I can just appreciate them being okay without questioning constantly if they’re eating enough!

Aw, it’s a nice feeling not having to constantly be worrying about there teethies x I’m sure Simon said it as a term of endearment 😆

Final update, unless anything bad happens.
Today Little weighs 1180! His usual weight falls at 1200-1250 so we’re close to being back at his healthy weight :yahoo:
He’s doing so well too, bless him. He’s munching his hay all the time, running around popcorning at floortime, wheeking for veg, and just being a happy little Guinea pig.
We can’t thank Simon enough, he is amazing. Thank you for all the continued support and advice, it means a lot and has helped massively :)

Aw, I’m so happy for you and Little x

Update:
Little isn’t eating his hay today. He’s eaten about two pieces and that’s it, he’s being very picky. He’s only eaten the two pieces because I’ve physically removed him from his bed. He doesn’t seem as much like himself either. I might see how he is tomorrow and then think about scheduling an appointment with Simon :(

Simon is off, for two weeks, from a week tomorrow, so get in quickly.
