Dental Potential Dental Issue

Oh dear! That is a nightmare, hope you can get the prescription sorted. Is there any other painkiller other than Metacam?
We’ll have to talk with Simon about it tomorrow. I believe Peanut was on metacam and gabapentin at one point, I think that’s what it was called anyway, if that’s able to be posted then maybe Simon might try that and then we’ll get the tramadol when we go in two weeks if it’s still needed. As if all the messing about isn’t bad enough, we have a guinea pig still in too much pain to eat his hay. Fingers crossed we can get it all sorted tomorrow

Yes it’s gabapentin I have had for nerve damage once to my optic nerve, it is a pain killer and anti inflammatory.

Hopefully we are able to get that, I think it’s a controlled substance as well but perhaps the human form might come in a doable dosage unlike the tramadol. We’re going to talk to Simon properly about it all tomorrow, it seems like he’s the only one who knows about all this. Fingers crossed we are able to get something. The only thing Little will eat is readigrass, he won’t touch the hay. It’s good that he’s at least eating something for himself, his poos are slightly more formed because of it

I think you’ll have the same problem, as Gabapentin is a controlled drug.
I know, it’s so difficult. We’re hoping it comes in a more doable human dosage so that we’re actually able to get the right amount for Little. We’re going to talk to Simon tomorrow about all our options as I think he’ll know what’s best and if there is any human medication we can get that’s doable

Ask if they can cancel the other prescription. Say you weren't able to do anything with it.

human tramadol comes in 50mg capsule ,you can empty a capsule into 5mls of water and give 1ml of the solution which equates to 10mgs per ml.I'm sorry you are having difficulties obtaining the medicine.
Thank you, that’s very useful. Do you know if the solution would keep well? Little would need 5mg twice a day so we would need to use the same solution over a number of days. We will have to ring and have them change our prescription if it keeps well.

Little not doing so well today. His poos are really bad, borderline diarrhoea. Every time he tries to eat something, it seems to get stuck. He does the weird thing with his cheeks and seems to be really struggling. This includes syringe food which he’s refusing now because of this.
Looked at his teeth today and his bottom incisor had partially split. We gently grabbed the part that had broken off and it lifted right out of his gum. We thought it would improve his chewing situation but it hasn’t. At the very root of his bottom incisor, it looked green but that could have just been some of the syringe food rather than an infection. We have no idea how his bottom incisor has even split in two as he’s been unable to chew cardboard tubes for quite a while now so he doesn’t chew anything that could’ve caused a split.

This is the tooth part that we pulled from his mouth.

On the plus side, we’ve had a call from a local vet who said they’re able to order some of the tramadol suspension. It’s really expensive, almost £60 for 30ml but it’s better than nothing. It’s going to get here in 3-4 days but hopefully sooner.

Fingers crossed Little improves as the day goes on or we may be ringing to see if there’s an earlier appointment they can squeeze us into as we don’t go for 8 days to see Simon

@furryfriends (TEAS) just out of interest, what does a jaw/chin/neck abscess feel like? Little seems to have developed a hard lump on his chin, it’s on the side where he has his remaining incisor. We’re pretty sure it wasn’t there before and his neck is more raised up there than it is on the other side. It just feels hard, I can’t feel any shape to it but it just feels hard and bigger than his neck should be. Does this sound like he has another jaw abscess? Is there anything else I can check for?

It does sound very abscess, or certainly infection, related! It would also account for why he's not doing so well at the moment.

We’ve managed to have another feel, it’s definitely there. It’s feels round, noticeably big too. I’d say it’s why he’s not eating right. He won’t drink for himself again, so we’re syringing him water. We’ve asked for Simon to give us a ring when he’s free. Poor Little :(

Update: we’ve spoken to Simon and we have an appointment tomorrow at 10:40. This appointment will include any treatment like if the abscess needs lancing or if Little needs an operation as Simon understands it isn’t practical for us to be going back and forth from Barnsley to Northampton. Since his tooth split and came out right from the root yesterday, it seems likely that his tooth will be removed in an operation when the abscess is sorted if that’s the path Simon decides to take. Fingers crossed that Little will be okay.

Oh dear, poor Little. Thoughts with you for tomorrow.
Thank you. He’s been consistently ill for the last five months now. First he lost one of his eyes, and then he’s been dealing with abscess/mouth issues (along with losing his second eye) since March. He hasn’t had a break, poor lad. I’m hoping this is the last hurdle for his sake.

Update: not great news. Little needs an operation. The situation is exactly the same as what happened with his other incisor. He’s having his remaining bottom incisor removed and his abscess sorted. His tooth won’t be growing back though, Simon doesn’t think. Simon can’t operate until 2 so we’re going to be waiting around till half 5 to pick him up

Ah I’m sorry to hear about little one. Thankfully you got to see Simon. Good luck and sending hugs to you all 🥰

We were lucky he was able to squeeze us in. It’s so strange how Little has developed abscesses under both his bottom incisors. Simon has said we could go back to Ellie for his top incisors trimming as they won’t need to be done great since there’s no bottom teeth so it should make no difference, they just need keeping at a good length. Simon thinks he will need them filing every 4 weeks.
Simon also said if things don’t work out with him just having his two top incisors, he can remove them at a later date but wants to try and keep them if possible.

Update: Little is back with us. Total came to £406 :yikes: he’s doing okay and has also had his top teeth trimmed. I think he may have fallen out with me, lol. We have just set off on our way back home, it’s been a long day!

Aw thinking of you all, it’s a long day wait8ng around, especially with this virus!

Little has had some syringe water and some syringe food. He’s also had his metacam and Zithromax. He seems half dead bless him, not moving too much but can tell he perked up as soon as he smelled the mashed nuggets. Once he got into it, he would practically leap forward as soon as he wanted another syringe of food.

We aren’t really sure what to do about water bottles, right now he has a sippy bottle (we also split the cage in half) as he struggles with regular bottles for some reason. Think we will add a regular bottle in tomorrow as well, but we aren’t sure how easy he will find it to drink with no bottom incisors.

I give water bowls to those who struggle with a bottle.

Oh yes, forgot about the bowl. I’ll give it a go if I feel I need to later. I’ve tried him with it before but he just doesn’t understand that there is water in there at all, and then because he can’t see, it makes it harder. He’s had some drinks from his sippy bottle this morning, so he may be able to manage it
