Dental Potential Dental Issue

Ah poor Little one - it’s great he perked up with the mashed pellets so hopefully he‘ll get stronger. It’s wonderful the devotion you have to Little one - although it’s hard, keep going you’re doing an awesome job ! Sending you all BIG hugs 🥰

Thank you! We love him so much. He’s been through a lot, I just hope that this is the last thing he has to deal with for a while

Just a small update I guess. Little smells really bad, like terribly bad. We bathed his neck about two hours ago, then he went into his hidey. He’s just come out of it and I can smell him from where I’m sat on my bed (his half of the cage is on the floor beside me). He’s just had a drink and is now eating some readigrass, but I’m not sure what to do about the smell. Whether we bathe him any time we smell him, or if we just leave him and bathe him every six hours or so?

What sort of smell? Is it the abscess?

Yeah I definitely think it’s the abscess. We haven’t had a proper look at it yet, just cleaned it earlier. We also weren’t given any care instructions as we didn’t speak to Simon after the operation. Last time he didn’t think we needed to do anything with it aside from keep it clean, but it smells awful

Ring the practice and ask for advice. They will be happy to help x

Aw poor Little, @furryfriends (TEAS) is the abscess queen, she’ll know what to do. Hope Little feels and smells better soon x

Will do in a little bit. We just collected our tramadol liquid suspension today, our vets rang up the cat and rabbit clinic to double check the dosage and they have prescribed 1ml twice a day. Does this sound right to you as it seems a little high to me. Little only weighs around 1100 grams.

I would rather you check with Simon, but I think it is okay. It didn't agree with Tilly at all!
It was the receptionist at cat and rabbit clinic who passed on how many mls we have to give, so I would imagine it’s accurate, but the amount threw me a little. But, it is weaker so it would make sense!

We’ve called about Little’s abscess smell, we couldn’t see any puss or anything inside the wound and it looks clean overall so they’re happy for us to just clean it when we see fit.

You are a very caring owner,Little is lovely guinea pig.i hope he improves.abscess smell is vile !once smelt never forgotten !🤗
Thank you! Yes, Little is such a sweetheart that it’s awful to have him be in pain. I can’t wait for him to smell better so that he and I can have proper cuddles rather than him being sat on me, and me looking away to dampen the smell. It must be even worse for him to have to smell it constantly

How are your piggies today ?
They are doing well. Today we put them back together as we’d had the cage split until Little got some of his strength back. Yesterday Little was eating some hay but preferred his readigrass however since being back with Peanut, he seems to be eating his hay okay which is what we hoped would happen. Little still smells but not as bad as before which is definitely an improvement!

That’s great news - I’m sure having company will really help him. Sending you all a BIG hug 🥰

Little’s abscess looks like it’s refilled with pus :(

We are going to ring and try to speak to Simon about it

Were you given a large syringe with a needle? Did Simon say to use a needle, or to put the syringe into the hole? Do you have any flat cotton wool pads? I would be looking at giving it a firm scub (I know that sounds horrible, but necessary) with a wet cotton wool pad. I've got a number of piggies in the vet this afternoon, but once I am home I can see if I can do a video of flushing an abscess. It's a bit awkward, as have no-one to film it, so will have to see how I get on with propping my phone up. I will try my best. In the meantime, give it a good clean with a flat cotton wool pad.

He didn’t give us one, no. We have one as we got one from our local vet when Little had his last abscess in case we needed it. It was the receptionist who passed on Simons information to us and all she said was it needed ‘getting out’. It wasn’t specified how we should do that. We’ve been doing cleaning firmly with cotton pads since Friday, the day after his op, just to make sure anything that could be building up made its way out. It doesn’t seem to have worked though, when we noticed all the pus this morning, we were doing it even more firmly but nothing really budged.
If you could film one then that would be great, if you can’t manage to do it though don’t worry about it :)

Tried to do a video but with needing to hold a syringe, plus a guinea pig and a phone, it just wasn't possible. I've spoken to Simon and suggested that he does an abscess flushing video to put on the Cat and Rabbit Clinic Facebook page. He says he will try and sort one, when he gets back from holiday, which unfortunately isn't going to help you. Have you been able to get any pus out of it? It may be worth seeing if a local vet can help.

Thank you for trying :)
We’ve been trying to flush it but haven’t had much luck. Little is currently at the local vets right now, hopefully they can sort it out for him!

Update:
My mum took Little to the local vet and she was able to sit in the waiting room whilst the vet had him but with the door open - if that makes sense. They had no idea what they were doing and had Little lying on his back. They looked and said they thought it was okay, they removed some crusts from around the wound, had a look at the stitches and then cleaned it but that was it. My mum was getting quite mad because of how they were holding him, Little was squealing a lot too. Overall it was a waste of time
