Phoebe - I am not happy

Dear Forum Friends,
I am dictating this to my slave to let you know the latest on my poorly eye.
I was just settled in the big tunnel with Priscilla for an after breakfast nap when I was rudely hauled out, force fed nasty medicine and dumped in the travel carrier.
OK - I did have some dill and my snuggle pouch to keep me warm as my slave forced me into the car and took me to the vet.
She talked to the vet who came out and stood by the car.
They thought I wouldn’t hear them talking about my weight and my poops as well as my eye!
The vet said he didn’t think he needed to see me today and that would save a consult fee. He just listened when my slave said she thought I needed to try Zithromax and said that would be fine.
More nasty medicine and he didn’t even want to look at my poorly eye and my pretty furry nose!
I need another x-ray and then maybe a visit to another vet called Molly in somewhere called St Helen’s. That sounds a nice place and he said Molly loves piggies and he did some of his training with her.
My slave was very happy today.
I’m not as I was so rudely woken from my nap for no reason.
I tried sulking all day but my slave wasn’t here at all so it wasn’t worth it.
She says she has to work to pay my vet bills.
I have my x-ray on Friday so the next chapter in the story of my poorly eye will be then.

Love from Phoebe

Dear Phoebe hope your X ray goes well on Friday, love from Ginger, Posh and Hecto and Kiki xx

Dear Phoebe
What a shocking way for you to be treated. And how rude of your vet to talk about you without even giving you so much as a cuddle, a chin rub or a massage. At least my lovely vet gave me a chin rub and a massage on Monday. I’ve not seen Molly myself, but the slave here says she was our vet for several years and that the piggies who lived here before me were very happy to see her (when needed of course!). I’m sure that it will be worth the drive to see her and perhaps there will be extra herbs as a reward).
Yours in sisterhood
Evie x

Dear Phoebe,

All this sounds like a big interruption of your usual nap times and I hope you demanded extra snacks after the nasty medicine!
I also went on a long car journey to see Dr Molly in St Helens. It is a very long way away, almost a whole hour! And I was there aaaaalllll day. I sat on Dr Molly's desk so she could watch me breathe a lot. I took Clover with me which was all use because Clover is more scared of vets than me. But we got to take our own tunnels and a picnic and Dr Molly took pictures of my insides and gave me nasty medicine, but she is a very clever vet lady cos she found out the chlamydia duck was what was in my lungs making me quack and honk for a year then I got better. Luna goes to see Dr Molly too which is why she can wheek so loud and eat so much hay even though she is very old. So you should probably go and maybe you could pop in and visit us on the way home cos we are on the way? Theo would like to rumble at you and our hoomans put on a decent salad buffet most days.
Love from Blod x

Well, we have a referral to Rutland House now.
Today’s x-ray is still not entire clear so there are three options.
1. Refer to Rutland House for further examination and tests.
2. Enucleation - but this may not solve the issue if it’s more than a retrobulbar abscess.
3. Continue with antibiotics and basic palliative care. Not an option for an otherwise healthy and happy 4 year old.

Knowing the reputation of Molly Varga and Rutland House I am glad that the vet suggested the referral and I didn’t have to ask. We will see what they say when we get an appointment.

Generally Phoebe’s eye is much better, her weight is good, she’s eating, drinking and pooping well. She’s bright, active and happy so the vet is happy with her condition.
I’m both happy and impressed with the level of care my vet gives.

My vet fund is very sick 🤒

I hope that the referral brings you some clarity and a long term plan for the lovely Phoebe. But I’m not liking the dent in your vet fund…..

I am glad Phoebe is happy, it's such a shame about her eye. I hope Molly Varga can shed some light on whats going on with her eye.
I am sorry about our vet fund, vet visits are so expensive.

She gets her Zithromax tomorrow so I’m hoping that it will do the trick.
I’m also hoping the vet is being ultra cautious and thorough and that there will be a straightforward solution for Phoebe without needing to remortgage the house!

I’m sorry Phoebe still has her eye troubles. I hope you get the solution soon. I’m sending my wishes for a speedy recovery for Phoebe.

Sending Phoebe lots of healing vibes and cuddles, sorry about your dwindling vet funds x

Sending healing thoughts for Phoebe. I hope the Zithromax solves the problem. xx

I hope you get some helpful advice. Phoebe is lucky that you are such a good guinea pig caretaker. Hugs

Some nice news today.
I went to pick up the Zithromax and was told that it had already been paid for.
The vet had added it to yesterday’s bill.
They also said that they had forgotten to use my account credit so that was still there.
I did the maths and reckon that I’ve been given a generous discount- about 20% on the bills. :D
Vet fund not quite as sick as I thought :D

Phoebe is definitely not a happy piggy today.
I’m seeking wisdom please.
She’s now on a daily dose of 0.8ml Azithromycin which appears to be affecting her appetite and cheerfulness.

I know from the forum that antibiotics can affect a piggy’s guts.
I managed to get some Pro-C today and have added it to the water.
I popped a dish of Critical Care in the cage earlier - Phoebe refused the proffered spoon.
I intend to take her out soon, weigh her and try to give her a syringe feed and some water with Pro-C added.

Is there anything else I should do?
I’m waiting for the referral to Rutland House to bear fruit.

Sorry Phoebe is not doing well today, we found Fibreplex a much more effective probiotic than Pro-C when Blodwen lost her appetite with doxycycline antibiotic- we mixed 1ml of Fibreplex into every 10mls of recovery food, and we have her a full proper meal of pellets and veg before her strong antibiotics, so she wasnt having it on an empty tummy, then a syringe feed of recovery food with Fibreplex an hour or two later.
You can get Fibreplex on Amazon, its a big syringe full of foul tasting but allegedly carrot flavour probiotic gunk, a bit more hardcore veterinary grade gut rescue than Pro-C I found.
Healing wheeks, and hope the referral hurries up, I can text you the direct email address for referral patients if you like?

@furryfriends (TEAS) and @Wiebke have most experience of Zith

Thanks @PigglePuggle
I will order some fibreplex for Phoebe.
I will also give Phoebe a syringe feed tomorrow morning before her meds - good tip.
I found the direct email for referral patients online, but thanks for the offer.
Unfortunately I’m away for a couple of days Weds - Friday leaving Daddy Slave in charge.
Not sure who will be unhappiest - him or Phoebe .
