Jaw lump

Thankyou ๐Ÿ’— so many meds and shes putting up such a fight ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜” its so disheartening when they go downhill despite everything. It's very worrying that she's facing a corner constantly, her friends keep trying to groom her and are being protective but she keeps moving away ๐Ÿ’” the last piggy who did that was flower and she didnt survive ๐Ÿ˜ญ her jaw bone may be involved, we could maybe do some x rays but whether they would tell us much we don't know, for now we've got to get her more stabilised, her poo is small and pointy despite 2 gut stimulants, she's lost a lot of weight in 24h, she was 1018g on my scales yesterday and 770g at the vets today (my scale batteries died right when I needed them not to but my scales usually match the vets almost exactly)

We did get sensitivity results back, the lab did not test against the zithromax or metronidazole but we are using them. She has 2 different bacteria in there, one is sensitive to baytril and the other only has intermittent sensitivity to it and is resistant to a lot of meds. It is however sensitive to doxycycline, those beads and the opthocycline stuff that we are squirting into it so if the current protocol does not work we still have options ๐Ÿ’— I did not want to use doxy initially because of it being known to wipe the guts and her already struggling. I'm hoping her teeth will rebalance if we can sort the abcess. We will have to get them sorted too if not but they are only slightly slanty at the moment, she was extremely distressed at being examined so we didn't check the molars today.

I'm so exhausted ๐Ÿ˜ฉ this has always been my nightmare issue ๐Ÿ˜ช

It is any loving owner's nightmare and I really feel for you.

How is Mal doing today? And you how are you?
Sorry for the delayed reply, not getting much sleep with trying to keep up with syringe feeding and flushing and 8 medications plus everything else, about to head to parents evening for my children! I'm absolutely exhausted! She really hates both baytril and emeprid! Not keen on metacam, paracetamol or cisapride either but surprisingly she seems to like and tolerate zithromax and metronidazole very well! She also doesn't seem to mind the one I squirt into it after each flush (it's actually an eye antibiotic but on the sensitivity and culture one of the bacteria that's resistant to a lot of stuff is sensitive to it) She's still struggling to eat by herself but is trying very hard! I think she's in a lot of pain still and her teethies are looking a bit more slanty today. She's taking recovery food well though and I'm getting a decent amount in! There is very slightly less pus today and for the first time I'm truly starting to feel hopeful that we have got this! Her friends are slightly less protective today ๐Ÿ’ช yesterday they were rushing over to her the second I put her back in after every feed/med and grooming her, it's what they did with flower and flower passed during the same night they were like it and I was getting very concerned that mal would do the same. I still can't believe she's on so many meds! She hates it being flushed, she hates taking meds but we are managing and that's something! I'm going to check her teeth again tomorrow morning and if there any more slanted I'm going to see if I can get the molars checked, I'm thinking if there is something going wrong with them that's going to need sorting too to help her eating however she is managing a little by herself and I am truly hoping it's more of a pain issue currently, the molars have been fine at every check so far ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž I will also find out more about an x Ray and what that will tell us! Thankyou so much for all the healing vibes and hugs, they are very much appreciated! xx

I have amazing news!
SHE WHEEKED FOR BREAKFAST! There's less pus and it's much dryer, her teeth are no worse and we've gone from staring at a corner to chasing companions intent on stealing their poo from their bums! Antibiotics ๐Ÿ™„ emailed the vet an update and to ask if we can stop baytril since both bacteria are sensitive to the eye drop one and we've had more improvement in 48h on these than a week of baytril and I want to minimise gut problems since her poop is really really tiny and she's clearly trying to rebalance if she's eating ๐Ÿ’ฉ! Mentioned her teeth are a little more slanty (but no worse than yesterday) and asked about these x rays and if she needs them! Asked what we do about getting more zithromax if they need to order it in or not since we have to discard this after 5 days as they said to keep in touch and ive asked if she needs a recheck before hand or not :)
She's taking 120ml of recovery food a day, eating a bit by herself, seems perkier though still some discomfort and is gaining weight! I feel like I could collapse from exhaustion but I've never felt so relieved! I know we aren't out of the woods until its completely sorted but wow what a difference!

Great news! So pleased for you, hope she keeps on improving bless her  Sending lots of healing vibes! And make sure you get a bit of rest today so you donโ€™t get wiped out! xx

I'm glad she's feeling a bit better... I've been following Mal's story along. One of my past pigs, Sundae, had an awful jaw abscess too, and although she did pull through I can remember so well how much work it was managing it so I totally feel for you!

Aw wonderful, you both deserved a break, so glad Mal is doing so much better x

Sorry for the delayed reply, its been hectic here! Thankyou so much for all your well wishes! Mostly positive improvement and the difference to her a week ago is remarkable but she keeps having little blips! I panicked Saturday morning when she didn't want veg, had a tender tum and was looking fluffed up and took her to the vets where she was well behaved and only tender after some prodding from the vet ๐Ÿ™ˆ after the last time she looked like that I probably over worried there. Mostly good at yesterday's recheck then today she's dropping food when trying to eat and looks all squinty eyed and sad so I've just sent another email to the vets with the picture and seeing if we can do anything other than what we already are! We briefly discussed opoids yesterday but decided against them since she was on so many meds and they can impact the guts and make them sleepy and we don't want to overload her system but looking at her today I'm not sure since her being in pain also knocks her appetite ๐Ÿฅด

@furryfriends (TEAS) @Wiebke hope you don't mind me tagging you here, in need of some dental piggy advice! so the pus is all gone but there is still a lump on her jaw which *may* be scar tissue but her teeth have gone rather slanty and shes struggling with eating. I'm starting to feel like we may need a dental to rebalance things but if it is scar tissue how will that affect long term prognosis. Lots of things have been mentioned briefly such as elongated roots and removing molars, potential infection in the jaw bone etc but nothing concrete. Do we start with x rays? Is there a way to tell how deep the infection goes? She isn't a happy girl right now and we don't know for sure what is wrong since the infection is clearing. We still have another couple of weeks of zithromax, metronidazole and opthocycline though! I can feel a small lump at the opposite side but I'm not sure if it's just her jaw or possibly a tooth root. I need to book another vet check I think, 6 days ago the molars were fine but I think it's worth rechecking? My vets used to do conscious dentals but no longer do but sometimes still do incisors conscious ๐Ÿค” I'm lucky they are very good and i honestly cant thank them all enough (shes seen every vet, most of the nurses and the receptionists have been great putting up with me too!) but I think I'd be looking at a referral for a conscious procedure should she need a dental, especially if it becomes a regular thing though I'm not sure she could currently tolerate a conscious procedure due to the pain she's in. Also not sure how I feel about anesthetic in a poorly pig! I am feeling stressed! She is managing a little better today than yesterday but still on a slightly downward curve with her weight. ๐Ÿฅบ if I don't see drastic improvement overnight I'll be calling for another appointment.

Unfortunately for you, my own experience with dental issues is not enough to advise you as to whether it is a new abscess forming or not; you may need another check up and then take it from their with your vets. They do seem competent.

All the best.

Thankyou ๐Ÿ’— I am very lucky to have them, they always go above and beyond ๐Ÿ’–

I have left mal at my vets for a dental and x rays. Her molars on one side seem to have shifted but they've trapped the tongue and the tips have gone black? It may be she needs lifelong dentals in which case we will be looking at referring for conscious procedures but right now shes painful so I don't think conscious would be the best idea, hope we get some answers from the x ray and the dental helps her xx

Hope it all goes well for Mal, just catching up after being away. A referral to Simon/Kim Maddock would be a good idea if sheโ€™s still having problems x

Just picked her up, her x Ray was all good and her teeth weren't terrible, they've only taken a tiny bit off as they didn't want to take too much and cause more problems, it was just the front molars at one side where the lump has seemed to push them into a funny angle, I was thinking either Simon or Ellie at matlock is a little closer ๐Ÿ’– my vet is happy to refer if she has any further problems but my vets have been so amazing, was speaking with one of the vets at pick up and she seems interested in the whole conscious dental thing but is worried about a vein at the back if they hit it and the tongue moving etc x

The conscious dentals are all done with tiny files, not a burr so it is very safe. Simon only uses a dental burr for incisors and he knows instantly when the burr is about to go through as he holds his finger nail behind the incisors x

Thankyou ๐Ÿ’—

GUESS WHOS MUNCHING ON GRASS ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’— so proud of this little one ๐Ÿฅฐ

Very happy to update here and say mal is perky, eating by herself with just a bowl for weight support and has been given the all clear to stop all meds except paracetamol as shes still a little sore! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ’— all of the past few weeks are worth it ๐Ÿ‘Œ we did it ๐Ÿ’–
Oh what a wondrous update :luv::wub::luv:
Well done to you for your devoted TLC and to her for her spirit.

Oh what brilliant news, Iโ€™m so happy for you, youโ€™ve worked wonders with little Mal x
