Just when we've gone 11 days without a piggy vet trip! Was giving mal a chin rub in the early hours of this morning and noticed she has a lump under her jaw at one side. Sam can feel it too so she has an exotic vet appointment booked for Thursday morning 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ she is eating okay and weight is stable so I am hoping it is nothing too serious but figured best to get it checked 🤦‍♀️😮‍💨 it is never ending 🤨

I am very sorry - it never rains but pours, doesn't?

A brewing jaw abscess is really not something you want to take into the Easter bank holiday. I hope that strong antibiotics can slow it down or at least prevent it from coming up at the most inconvenient time.

Dylan developed a lump on the side of his jaw in December 2019 when we were bound for Christmas with my family in Switzerland. The abscess was like yours not developed enough to be lanced but thankfully 2 courses of zithromax and 0.5 ml of twice daily metacam not only got him through the holidays but actually got on top of the abscess altogether, even it knocked out his appetite completely for the last week or so. As he's still here at around 6 years by now, it was well worth the effort when Kim Maddock and I were trying to work out the best chance of getting him through the looming Christmas holidays even though Kim was rather sceptical.

This on the background of Hywel doing exactly that 6 years ago, coming up with a bursting jaw abscess while Simon was on Easter holiday. The next time he did it was on the eve of hub's first hernia op which meant that we would be without a car for the coming two weeks and while Nerys had lost mobility in her back legs and was just hanging by a thread in terms of needing pts or not. Not one of my best times! I truly feel for you; it can really feel so never ending when you are right in the middle of a lump of illnesses and/or losses. :(

Thank you 💝 I admit the timing could officially not be worse, 12h night shifts all Easter weekend from thursday for me! 😪

Oh wow, you really are having such a tough time. Hope you can get on top of whatever it is. Big hugs x

Mal is usually my well behaved healthy pig too! A nail bed infection is all we've had to deal with in her entire 2 years and shes my only unspayed sow 🥴 but these things happen all i can do is keep on with the vet trips and hope for a break at some point! Currently also trying to get on top of nuggets latest ic flare, currently up to 1ml dog metacam twice daily and 2 cystease, she may need another cartrophen course so I'll be pignapping her along with mal Thursday if she isn't looking happier incase the vet wants to do it at the same time! 😬😪 fx she is settling down before then! marshmallows swab results came back with a bacteria but a normal one that lives there and is sensitive to the antibiotics we've already tried so likely isnt our intermittent snot and clicking issue, the next stage for her would be dental x rays to check for elongated roots but as her teeth look fine and she's happy in herself despite the bouts of clicking and snot we've chosen to monitor for now and leave her teeth alone, caramel is touch wood doing okay 🙃

We have everything crossed for a smooth procedure and good outcome.
You are doing a great job under difficult circumstances.

Nuggets flare calmed down enough to not have to take her along, mal is staying for surgery to remove the lump
So glad Nugget’s calmed down and didn’t need to go in. Poor little Mal bless her, sending lots of love and hugs, really hope she’s ok ❤️ xx

Poor little Mal, hope the operation is a big success, sending healing vibes x

Fingers crossed for the op but glad that the flare has settled down again easily.

How long does post op swelling take to go down? She is on 1ml dog metacam twice daily. She is eating by herself although I can tell she is sore she is holding her weight :) when I picked her up they said she was swollen but not to worry as it was just post operative swelling, she has a post op Thursday but it feels like she has a second head and i wasnt expecting it to take this long 😬 I'm just happy it isn't bothering her too much 💗 just us humans when we check it 😬 please reassure me the swelling will eventually go down she looks all wonky when she eats though her incisors are straight so she must be managing 💗 we are day 5

She has another vet appointment tomorrow, the swelling is going down a bit but it looks a bit funky today 😳 20220425_093454.webp

Very interesting vet appointment! Wish Id've sent off the lump now! I don't suppose anyone has any experiences with salivary gland problems? @Wiebke @furryfriends (TEAS) ? Mals swelling popped last night and started leaking sticky blood. Speaking with the operating vet today she said she'd never seen anything like mals original lump (and shes operated on a lot of piggies!), it was solid, perfectly encapsulated and not attached to anything but the surrounding tissue started swelling immediately as she was removing it. The stickiness of the blood coming out of it now is something only seen in salivary fluid and joint fluid and its definitely not coming from a joint so there must be something with the salivary gland going on. Apparently the vet said her first ever boss said never to operate on a salivary gland as they swell so much however mals original lump was growing so it did need to be removed. Poor baby is in a lot of pain though so she now has 0.2ml of paracetamol as well as 1ml dog metacam twice daily and is back on Friday for a recheck. 💗

I’ve had that swelling happen after lump removal. It’s filled with a watery sticky serum. It’s called a seroma. You can read about it here. It usually resolves on its own.

What is a Seroma?
Thankyou 💗 this isn't watery at all, it's blood but sticky if that makes sense 🤔 good to know it resolves on its own though thankyou ☺️ 20220425_233006.webp

OUCH!

All the best. I sincerely hope that it resolves on its own.
