Eriathwens piggies

So sorry to learn that Forrest has toddled off over the Rainbow Bridge. Sleep well little one.

So sorry to read this, he sounded incredibly special and it was obvious how very loved he was. You must be devastated. Take care.

Thankyou all for the lovely comments, I just wanted to update that sadly Forrest has passed away. Obviously we are absolutely heartbroken, Silver has not taken it very well so we are giving him lots of love and support while I figure out what we can do so he isnt alone 😔
I'm so sorry you lost Forrest. 😭💔 Fingers crossed Silver will be better and you can figure out the best thing for him.

Popcorn free Forrest, you will be missed. 🌈❤️

My heart sank when I read this.
So very sorry that gorgeous Forrest is gone.
He had the best possible life with you.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve.
Hugs 🤗

Thankyou all. Now that it has sunk in a little bit, I will probably bond Silver with Mabel, as she is spayed. Silver loves to cuddle up to another piggy and so does Mabel, she has been missing cuddles since the loss of Gus and Ebony as the main herd aren't big on cuddling.

Pippin likely needs spaying soon so as she is of a similar, elderly age as Mabel, I will probably have her spayed and put her with the pair as well, as Mabel and Pippin have become quite close since Delilah passed.

Now that I have some plans and don't have to worry about Silver so much, I feel more able to grieve.

Silver was curled up asleep in the corner of his cage when I checked on him, but came running when I tapped the cage, so I've taken him out to catch up on the great British bake off with us. He's quite grumpy at the moment, chattering his teeth and trying to smell and bite everything. I wish I could do something to make things better for him 😔

Poor Silver, he is missing his little soulmate 😞 I hope he comes through grieving Forrest and you can find him a little friend 🤞

So, I briefly mentioned back in March that it had been my vets last day.. a new practice opens locally on Monday and guess who has reappeared 🙂 so obviously this week I registered with them and I've been getting everyone's details sent over so they can request all the medical records from the other practice, not that I'm leaving them completely but you know.. he knows all my pets quite well at this point and its just, you like who you like at the end of the day. I trust him with surgeries etc and to be thorough.

Anyway, it was well timed because Poppet decided she wanted to get a nice hold in her side. It's in exactly the same spot that the incision was from her spay that had trouble healing, reacted awfully to the sutures and needed stapling in the end, so I can only assume she's has had an abscess brewing, hidden away, that has come to the surface and burst. The tissue looks pretty good luckily but I'm pretty concerned about her having a hole where nature did not intend for there to be one! And I'm equally concerned I don't know what's going on under the surface in the other layers that had suture material.

So.. I'm hoping my vet has an appointment free, what better welcome back gift than a ridiculous problem with a guinea pig, like old times 🫠

I’m glad your favourite vet has reappeared. That’s brilliant.

Poor Poppet. Hope it’s easily sorted. 🤞🏻

It's worrying, but great that your favourite vet can treat her. I hope it turns out OK.

I’m glad your special Vet has reappeared - dear Poppet I hope that gets sorted asap ❤️

It seems Poppets little hole is definitely an abscess as its now draining pus.. so, if the new practice doesn't call me by the time I've finished the piggies morning meds and I've had breakfast, I'll give them a call to see if everyone's medical records are on the system as she needs to be seen sooner than I originally thought.

Luckily she is still absolutely fine in herself, just a bit tender around the abdomen.

So, he thinks it's some sort of fistula, there's definitely something in there that doesn't look like muscle, but the wound is infected. He didn't think it was in her best interest to be on months of antibiotics so for now we are going to flush it twice a day and apply flamazine, and cross everything it heals itself.
There's a surgical option but we decided not to pursue that unless we absolutely have to, as there's a risk that during the incision healing, there has been adhesions to organs, if he tries to cut through the muscle layer and there's an organ stuck the other side, it's game over so unless anything starts herniating we're leaving that alone for now!

Shes to stay on metacam for now as well, which I'd already got her on because I assumed it'd be painful.
Hopefully the flushing and flamazine will kill off the infection and not allow anything else in while it heals, but he said it could well take weeks to months before it heals over. And just closing the skin, would seal in the infection.

So, not the best news in the world 😔 but it could have been worse, I was worried we were looking at some sort of cancerous tumour or something.

I wish I could say her wound was looking better.. but if anything it's bigger and I've caught her chewing it. I'm not entirely sure if it's itchy or sore.. but she's on decent pain relief now so it shouldn't be too sore.

While flushing I've found some thick white stuff behind "whatever" the lump is, I'm hoping it's infection coming to the surface but it doesn't flush out just yet, so it could be fatty tissue. I'm not sure 😬 I'm going to give her a few more days to see how we go. I knew it was going to be a long process but I was kind of hoping it'd be a less bumpy one 😅

Oh poor little Poppet. And what a worry for you, too. But she’s in very safe hands with you & your vet. Hopes things improve soon.

Thankyou, its certainly a worry, as much as shes "fine" in herself, she also cant just live her life with a hole in her abdomen. I've decided to deviate slightly from the original plan, my vet said to be very sparing with the flamazine on the wound as its currently out of stock everywhere due to supply issues..so, I've ordered a tube of medical grade manuka honey to pack the wound with after its been flushed. That way I will only need a tiny amount of the flamazine on the surface. This type of wound seems to be exactly what the manuka honey is advised for so fingers crossed it helps, I suppose the worst it can do is nothing.
