Eriathwens piggies

So unfortunately Silver is still squeaking from time to time, and he has also caught whatever is causing Forrests scabby sores on his face 🤦‍♀️ luckily they have an appointment tomorrow afternoon so can be sorted out. I've a feeling Silvers lower incisors also need trimming but he will not let me do it.

Luckily it doesn't seem to be stopping them from eating. I wonder if it's from pepper or tomato juice getting stuck around their teeth.

I am sorry they are getting those sores. Red had sores like that last year, he kept pawing at his mouth as well. The vet checked his teeth twice in 3 days as I was convinced there was a problem in his mouth. The vet was looking at his teeth through the instrument they use and not at the front gum line! I got my partner to hold him while I looked and I found food wrapped round the base of the top front teeth! Once cleaned the sores healed up. 2 weeks later they were back and I found five pieces of hay wound round the bottom teeth. He's been fine since. I hope Silver and Forest get better soon.

Thankyou! That makes a lot of sense, my vet removed some food from around the base of Silvers teeth a few visits back now you mention it, I'm assuming it's a similar issue to Red! Given their misaligned teeth I might invest in a very soft infant toothbrush or something to make sure they're not getting food stuck anywhere hard to reach..if they don't try to eat it 😅

The toothbrush sounds like a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I've got some very soft bendy plastic tooth picks I use for Brillo as he gets hay stuck between his top front teeth, once wiggled down a little bit I can pull it out. I unwound Red's hay a tiny bit with one of the picks and then caught hold of an end with tweezers and untangled it that way. I didn't see what happened with his top teeth, as he was at the vet the day I discovered it for something else she did it with a nurse in a back room. There's never a dull moment with guinea pigs!

Hove it goes well for their vet trip, it could well be trapped food that’s causing the sores around their mouths. As the teeth aren’t self cleaning die to their wonky shape. Would a cotton bud help the clean around the gums at the front?

If I can find some really robust ones they likely would! They're a nightmare for grabbing and chewing anything that goes near their mouths though 🤦‍♀️ the ones I have atm are a bit cheap and flimsy so I haven't dared try incase they eat them 😅

Little moneys! I can just imagine them trying to chomp away on an ear bud 🙄

Well the boys almost behaved themselves 😅 Forrest tried to eat the dental burr so has a nice cut on his lip but I'm sure it'll heal fine.

They had their teeth burred and cleaned, there was a load of food stuck behind and around the teeth which is probably what's causing the issue so I'll be adding cleaning their teeth to my list of odd jobs 😅 although he did say a few times a week would be fine, rather than every day.

Silvers bladder didn't feel painful so I'm going to try him on some cystease and finish up his baytril, and see how he goes. He can have cartrophen injections as well, but I'm really not looking forward to injecting him so I'm hoping it clears up without needing those 🤞 I might just have the nurse do him, he's an absolute bugger for throwing his head up right at the wrong moment 😅

I'll probably also go back to grating and shredding their veggies, just to avoid them crushing food into a pulp and hopefully reduce the amount getting stuck around the incisors. They do eat well but with their jaw misalignment getting worse, obviously it's going to continue being an issue.

Such adorable little boars. I'm glad the vet found the reason for the sores, although cleaning their teeth regularly is a pain they should soon clear up now. After Red's experience I check him at his weigh ins but he hasn't had the problem again.

I was told not to pick off the sores, just to dab on diluted Hibiscrub 2 or 3 times a day. I kept seeing my Grandmother when I did this as some must have gone in Red's mouth as hard as I tried not to let it. When we were cheeky she used to say "I'll wash your mouth out with soap".

Well, poor Forrest got a hay seed stuck in his eye overnight, of course it had to be the eye that's deteriorated the most that may or may not rupture at some point. They certainly enjoy keeping me busy! Luckily it doesn't seem to have caused any damage to the eye and now it's out, he's happy as Larry...running around no doubt trying to get another one 😅

His conjunctiva is a little swollen but hopefully by morning that will have gone down. He's had drops etc so fingers crossed.

Gus has been teaching Mabel about corn, shes had it before but didn't really understand it was edible..until now 😅 she looked so pleased with herself for eating some of it.

Poor Delilahs legs aren't too strong today, going to see if I can get her seen Monday to see what we can do for her. I'm not sure what I'm hoping it is, best case I suppose is her arthritis and we can sort it with adjusting her pain meds, but given we lost her sister Daisy to cancer I'm a little concerned to be honest. I've got her on vet bed and a heat pad at the moment so she's comfy and warm, she's still eating and happy although I'm offering her extra feeds of critical care just to be sure.
Which she rewarded me with a death nap to frighten the life out of me when I went to get her something tasty from the kitchen
😅
