The Bradshaw Family

How is everyone?
We have all very much enjoyed the sunshine this week ☀️

Unfortunately Woody is still lame (he’s probably tweaked his annular ligament again by showing off to his field buddies). So he’s resting while we wait for our vet appointment on Monday

He is enjoy sunset walks with his mum 🧡

He’s also really loving his new huge stable! It’s like half a barn to himself. And Dan built us our own tackroom in there ❤️

His new best buddy is Kenny the tiny Shetland 💙💙

We’ve had another super busy week with work and the business. Plus I’m now working with a couple of manufacturers to get my brand off the ground 🤞🏻 just waiting on sampling and then I’m on with marketing

Hope everyone is well 🥰

Oh Woody. He’s looking gorgeous in the sunshine (we’ve had thunder and lightning down here in the south today) but how frustrating that he’s still lame. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome from the vet on Monday. On a separate note, I’ve got stable envy 🤩

Brilliant isn’t it 🥰 so much space for him. He’s been flat out sleeping a lot, so he must be comfortable in there. It’s me who has to deal with his shavings mane and tail in the mornings 😂🧡

Oh I just love Woody doing his ‘thing’ ❤️
He is so lucky to have all that space and Dan has made a great tackroom !
The doggies look very happy together
A very happy lovely family ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Just realised, it's been over a month since I caught up on here. So sorry everyone!
Things are so busy (nothing changes.... 🙈)

Woody updates:

Woody is going in to his 7th week of box rest following the swelling we found in his flexor tendon on the last scan :( I do hand walk him with his legs support bandaged and I let him have 20 mins loose in the arena every morning so he can have a roll and a leg stretch. He is coping so well, surprisingly. For a sports horse, he's really coping with his confinement (though not ideal). I'm still at a crossroads with what to do for him for the future. I am pushing toward retiring him (with the potential of light riding and taking him out on hacks), as he does have some collective issues going on now. That is not surprising as he has had quite the sporty career with his jumping and dressage. But I do want to be able to turn him out. I can't keep him in indefinitely. We are going to push on for a couple of weeks till the 11th November when he has his next scan. That way I will know if the rest has been working. I am going to discuss options with the vet, particularly the option of him resting over the winter with daily turnout with the other horses. Then we will reassess his soundness in the spring. He owes me nothing and I owe him everything for the years we have had together, so I want him to be happy and sound.
To be honest, I've really fallen out of love with the industry. I've worked in the equestrian industry for over 30 years, but it's definitely getting worse. More and more horrible people and lack of good yards to keep your horse at. I don't know if I've lost the love for my sport because of everything going on with Woody, or if it's because my life is going in different directions now... But I thought that by giving us both a break over the winter, I can readdress how I feel next Spring. I work so much anyway, and now the dark nights are here there is less riding on week days. When he has been injured in the past I've been desperate to get riding and competing again, but now I'm shocked by how little I'm missing it all.

Anyway, on a more positive note, here are some pics of him from over the last few weeks 🧡

Koda and Peggy updates:

As you can imagine, these two are keeping me very busy. Every day is full of adventures for these guys. Peggy is growing rapidly (as you all saw in the above Halloween pictures). They will be getting their outfits back on Thursday evening to go 'Trick or Treating'. Tonight I need to carve the pumpkins that they chose at the pumpkin patch yesterday. They very much enjoy our weekend visits to the off lead dog agility park. Peggy got a good report at her latest vet health check. She will be in the same flea/worming bracket as Koda soon, as it goes off weight. I can't believe she is 16.2kg already, at 6 months old! She will soon catch up to Koda (he's currently 27.5kg). We have been getting lots of Autumn pics on our adventures (my favourite season by far).

Pics: 💙💛

Other updates:

Dan is crazy busy with the business. He's just celebrated his 33rd birthday. He's got another couple of project cars at the moment (I say project, but lets face it, he'll never restore them to sell on, they will end up in the collection :))). He's also back out mountain biking now that the motorsport season is coming to an end.
As if I don't have enough to do with the business, my job and my animals, we are launching my own business over the next couple of weeks. It's been in the pipeline for a couple of years but development has really progressed over the last couple of weeks, we are just on with web design at the moment ready for launch. I know I can't continue lecturing forever and this is something I've always wanted to do.

I do hope everyone is well. I'm going to have a scroll through the Forum over the next couple of days as some of my students aren't in, so I'll get a minute for a brew and catch up!

Look forward to seeing how everyone is getting on

Oh exciting and busy times! Loving all the photos of your beautiful pets. Hope Woody continues to get better but whatever you decide, enjoying your time with him is the most important. Don’t be afraid to drop the eventing if it’s no longer fun 😊

Lovely photos ….as always ! Exciting times for you all - I think you’ll know by Spring
Great news about your business !
Good luck 🥰

We had our annual Animal Welfare Research conference yesterday. What a wonderful range of key note speakers, and thought provoking talks.

Dr. David Marlin (a highly renowned equine and animal scientist) started with a very thought provoking talk about social licensing, and just because we use animals ( for sport, companionship, entertainment, etc), does that mean we should? To see how welfare of animals (just in this country alone) has not actually come that far in 200 years was a real eye opener for a lot of the audience. It’s crazy to see how many welfare laws are still not enforced globally, as how we value animals varies so much between cultures. But he really got everyone thinking about the risk of the equestrian social license to operate, with everything going on at the moment.
We then enjoyed a talk from a past student now studying for a phd looking at the use of accelerometers in agility dogs to aid course design and turns to minimise common injuries.
We then also enjoyed a talk from one of our own lecturers who presented research comparing pressure points from both standard and anatomically designed bridles for horses.
We had one of the agriculture researchers present some fascinating findings in to the behaviour of cattle in relation to handier behaviour at auctions.
We had researchers from the British Flood Management agency to show their latest work to maintain ecology, rivers, wildlife etc.
We also had a UCLAN professor discussing his phd and more recent work trying to standardise the way we research animal behaviour and the production of ethograms. And to finish, a lovely display from ecology dogs, used in conservation efforts and as part of environmental conservation control.

It really was a fantastic day. For anyone who is interested in research and animal welfare anyway! 😊

I'm happy to share more detail with anyone that’s interested
