I came home today to find what looked like blood on the wood shavings in the guinea pigs cage. I checked them all over and saw what I thought was a little blood around Elizabeth’s private’s so am 95% sure it’s her. I phoned the vets who told me to go straight down. I took all 3 girls.

They were all given a thorougher examination. All bladders are soft, no pain, no ovarian cysts and nothing out of the ordinary. Of course, the blood had gone from Elizabeth by the time we got there.

The vet has prescribed yucky baytril for Elizabeth with the instruction to only give it to her if I see anymore blood.

Please keep your fingers crossed that it wasn’t blood at all. After having had two pigs with IC, I can’t go through all that again 😞

Try not to worry. If it is something brewing, hopefully it is nothing that can't easily be put right. I know that IC is a nuisance but if is that at least it is manageable with medication. Fingers crossed here for your piggies.

I know that you have probably thought of this already but have you given them any beetroot (fresh or dried) as i know that this can can cause pink urine.

🤞all crossed for Elizabeth, is there any other red food she may have had? Hope it’s just a blip and no more symptoms x

No other red food has been given. I’ve just picked her up and got blood on my hands and she has blood around her vagina so at least I know it’s definitely her 😞 I’ve just started her on the baytril. She’s to have 0.4ml twice a day. Does that sound about right? She weighs 1250g I’m thinking that if she’s still bleeding after the antibiotics finish next Wednesday, I can at least get her back to the vets before Christmas

Aw sorry, hope she is better soon Claire, you caught it quickly 🤞

You have done really well to catch it so quickly Claire.
The Baytril dose sounds right, and hopefully it will do the trick.

Remember that it doesn't affect all guinea pigs Claire and you also have other pigs - try some poop soup

Thank you I’ll try that. I guess it’s because you hear so many horror stories about baytril but I guess it wouldn’t be licensed for guinea pigs if it were all that bad?

Try not to worry, Claire. I’ve never had a problem with Baytril - it’s just that the piggies hate it. But you can always give her some Pro C to help her guts. I picked up some Pro C in Jollyes the other day - it’s easy to find in most pet stores. If she’s fine in herself, eating & pooping then try not to worry. The antibiotics will need time to work and do their job.

Thank you everyone. I’m going to pick some pro c up today. She’s passing frank blood which is so scary but the vet said everything felt normal so I’m trying not to worry too much at this stage. Very hard not too though 😞

Got home to more blood in the cage and she has blood in and around her vagina 😞 But I managed to get the Pro C from pets at home. This was dotted around the cage, not one big clump. Anyway, I have her an appointment booked at the vets for next Wednesday as that’s when her antibiotics run out and I’d like her seen and have enough supply to last the Christmas period. I did try for Monday but they’re fully booked apart from emergency slots so everyone has the same idea to have their pets seen before Christmas BCDB8A47-E83E-4081-A870-66CCCBEB66FE.webp

I know it's easier said than done, but you are doing everything you can right now.
In my experience it can take a few days for things to improve once you start antibiotics, so still seeing blood isn't totally unexpected.
It's great you have a follow up plan in place and next Wednesday sounds like the best time, as then you will be fully checked and up to date right before the holidays. Plus this will give the medication the maximum amount of time to kick in.

Thank you. Surely it can’t be normal? About a teaspoon full of blood came out :( I’m now worrying that she could have crusty nipples although it looks like dried on poo? Wouldn’t she have other symptoms if she had ovarian cysts? Vet said her abdomen felt normal and that she wasn’t in pain. My minds in overdrive :( I could do with a hug. I’m feeling so stressed out :( x
