Little Melvins rescue

Sorry for duplicate pictures
This is Melvin this morning after his little brush by my daughter.
His haircut isn’t looking so savage now as nearly all his beautiful coat was dreadlocks and had to be cut.
He is still bony on his bum and shoulders but has a wonderful full tummy now ...... unrecogniseable from the matted skeleton we picked up in my scarf 🧣

He's looking wonderfully well - what a transformation!
I have to show my daughter (14) who has been asking after him since she saw his little photo in the hay! ❤

Ohh my gosh I can't believe he's averaging 830grams already! That's incredible! 🥰 Isn't that like 700grams of weight in a week or two?! Amazing!

Oh how sweet of her, I’ve been really touched by how much people care on this forum.
We didn’t hold him much then, he was so bony it must of been agony for him...
The pictures don’t do him justice 🥰

Yep! He eats alllllll the time, never stops or only for a drink, I think warmth helps a great deal as he isn’t shivering any calories off.... and deep boxes of good hay so he can be warm, hide, sleep and eat all the time without moving much..... sound like heaven to me 😂😂😂

He's a real stunner!

I would recommend to contact East Peckham and ask whether you could go on their waiting list for residential bonding to find Melvin a suitable friend whenever that is possible. If they are that close, I would also ask Sandra whether she could recommend her rescue vet to have Melvin neutered as soon as that will get the ahead from the vets' in the current unpredictable conditions in order to give him more dating options.

I will thank you x
I will have him checked by my vet as it’s booked in for his check up since she saw him initially at his worst, she’s been my vet over the years but I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if I took him to an guinea pig specialist for the op xx

I had missed Melvin’s story - how wonderful that you and your family have rescued Melvin. He’s a beautiful boy and unrecognisable from when you took him home. You are a wonderful person to dedicate your love and care to nourish Melvin.
I love the pigtures 🥰

I am sure your vet will be impressed! :tu:

The important aspect for any neutering is that the operating vet has to be confident; the more practised they are, the less time they need for the op and that means a lesser risk of potential complications - it doesn't matter whether that is a general vet or an exotics vet. Using a rescue vet usually means that they have plenty of piggy neutering practice; it is as simple as that. but if you are happy with your own vet, then by all means use them or discuss any plans for Melvin's future with them, too.

You have done an amazing job with Melvin, he is looking lovely. He has such a happy future ahead of him now, well done you x

Lovely to see how well Melvin is doing now. What a lucky piggy he is to have found a home with you.xx

Wow what a transformation! Cannot believe how much weight he is put on! Well done for turning his life around!

3E8F62BF-F7B5-47BE-BD7F-CC0F3E8EC423.webp Merab was completely blind for the last years of her life.

It didn’t stop her exploring, doing zoomies ( in a small circle) or generally living a happy life.
The only thing that slowed her down was age.

If Melvin is blind there is no reason for it to diminish his enjoyment of life.
The transformation in him is wonderful to see - just goes to show what proper love and care can do.
He is so lucky to be with you

What a transformation he has made and the weight he's put on is amazing 🤩
He's absolutely stunning 😍
Thank you for taking him on and giving him all the love and care to bringing him back to health and giving him and a future partner a wonderful home 💜💖💜

He is an absolute stunner - any sow he may meet will think all her birthdays and christmases have come at once! Me and my piggies send you and Melvyn loads of love and best wishes for a happy future together. You are a star for giving him the wonderful life he deserves x

Just caught up on this. Thank you so much for rescuing little Melvin. You have done an amazing job with him. He is unrecognizable .com the first pictures, he looks so happy. I hope that these people at the nursery are never allowed to keep an animal like this again. They should be reported.
I would be heart broken if I found an animal in those conditions.
Onwards and upwards Melvin, you have a lovely new happy home enjoy it. You deserve it.xx

Melvin update: good and bad news.

Sadly as suspected the rescues have closed doors due to the pandemic so no bonding services or adoption are available.
Melvin as suspected is also blind... weather this is age related or from birth we will never know, but he is thriving so will be fine. 🥰
Also he’s suitable for neutering! But they do not consider this as urgent so won’t perform the surgery.
Unless! We have a female!.... I explained I wanted a female wife.
This means it opens his dating world right up but rescues not being open we can’t date ..... Melvin has to be alone for the meantime 😢😢😢

I'm sorry it’s not what you wanted. But actually he has adjusted extremely well given his previous circumstances. So I reckon he will be absolutely fine and live a full life nonetheless.

With regards closed rescues, it’s a case of just waiting. Two experienced advisers did say to wait until he’s to his full size before you think about bonding him with another. I think he will do just fine in the meantime. It is unfortunate that they won’t neuter him yet, but I think they’re limiting what they do nowadays. Did they say when they may be able to book him in? It actually gives you more time to get him to a good size. Try to think of the positives ☺️

It will be worth the wait. My gorgeous Felix had a period of time from rescue to recovery, then neutering and then meeting his first wife Angel. Melvin will benefit from this period of recovery before he is neutered, and will be fit, well and raring to go when you have a wife for him.

Ah Ali- bongo I think actually it may be all good news for this moment in time. Melvin has gone from being neglected , unloved and malnourished to having a loving home where he is thriving. All down to you and your family ! A few weeks/ months on his own but continuing his recovery will not make any difference. Being a stronger healthier piggie will mean a neutering op will be easier. As VickiA said from experience, her lovely Felix did the same. You have shown this little man such love and care , no wonder he’s thriving 🥰
