So we seem to be having a run of sick piggies. I'm blaming my OH who stupidly said that we hadn't been to the vets for a while! Why would you say such a thing.

Our lovely boy Ginger Pig is now passing blood in his urine, so off to the vets at 2.20 today. I am hoping that it is just a UTI but Ginger has a history of fast growing tumours so fingers crossed.

This will be our 3rd vet visit since my OH uttered those words. So far we have spent £350 in 2 weeks and so it continues. I sometimes feel like i am keeping my vets in business, i dare not look at how much we have spent there so far this year.

Sadly, this comes with an ageing group of piggies, we have two 7 year old girlies and 2 skinny pigs who are five and half (old for skinnies).

Fingers crossed for Ginger Pig! It always comes in at least 3's. It is a downside to groups, the ability for numerous pigs to come down with completely unrelated ailments 🙄

Fingers firmly crossed that it is some easily treatable. Poor Ginger and poor you!

I feel for you; it always happens in lumps and everything at once. All you can do is save up for the rainy days during the dry season in between and then weather it as best as you can. What a worrying time for you! :(

After losing 20 piggies in 20 months (after an amazing 18 months of no losses during the worst of the pandemic), I have thankfully only one more frail oldie to left to go anytime in the nearer future before I reach the next inter-generational adoption gap and a much needed respite. It has been not just an emotionally harrowing experience that will take me many more months to fully digest but also a tough time for my piggy account.

You are always grateful when you get your piggies to a good old age; but the prospect of losing them is not any easier after all those years - nor is it necessarily cheap. :(

Oh poor Ginger. Hopefully he will soon be sorted and your piggy funds can be topped up again. These things do always seem to come at once.

Ginger Pig has a sludgy bladder, even though all my piggies are on a low calcium diet. As he isn't showing signs of much discomfort at the moment our vet has suggested we try upping his water intake and making more dietary changes. A bladder flush would be a last resort because of the risk from the anaesthetic.

So, we have been told to add extra water bottles and a water dish (as he has arthritis and a dish may be easier for him) and to try adding a few drops of a sugar free squash to one of the water bottles. We are also to increase the amount of lettuce and cucumber in his diet and to start introducing grass now that it is growing again. The hardest part will be the no nuggets. The nuggets we use are from Piggy Parcels, so they are the best ones out there but our vet says no!

Ginger has Cerenia for a month and we will also give him Cystease.

I wish i could explain to Ginger why we are taking away all his favourite things. :(

So sorry you are having such a hard time with the piggies, hoping Ginger will feel better soon and the extra remedies work well x

Sadly, Ginger Pig has deteriorated while I was on holiday. He was no longer passing blood in his urine and I thought it was ok to leave him while we went away. He has lost 70g in weight and is dribbling urine all the time. We have had an emergency vet appointment and he is booked in for a scan and X-ray tomorrow. 😢

Poor Ginger pig, I hope you can find out what the problem is, hope there is no stones🤞Sending healing vibes from Cornwall x

Just had a call from the vet. Ginger has had a bladder flush and there was also a small stone in his penis which they have had to remove by making a small hole (which sounds soooo painful). They don't stitch the hole but allow it to heal naturally, so i have been warned that his pee may come out of two places for a few days until it starts to heal. He is in ICU at the moment as he is a little cold and i need to call back later to see if we can collect him today. He will be coming home with antibiotics, metacam and gabapentin.

We have our fingers crossed that he recovers well. The poor little fella has been through so much.
