I am in despair - healing vibes needed again

Another update. Wilf's thyroid medication was increased earlier this week due to further weightloss but this morning hi weight had gone down again and was 625g. I rang the vet and managed to get him an emergency appt this morning. I took Annie with him as she could cuddle up to him and keep him warm. I agreed to him being put under anaesthetic for an x-ray, biopsy and blood sample then drove all the way home in tears. Early this afternoon I had a call to day he had woke up and I am going to collect him tonight. Healing vibes yet again please

Oh poor Wilf. Hopefully all the tests will lead to a diagnosis and right treatment. Sending healing vibes from me and the piggies.

I hope they will get to the bottom of it. All the best for Wilf and yourself.

Lots of healing vibes sent your way. Really hope you can get to the bottom of what’s going on x

His blood results are in. It seems his kidneys and thyroid are within normal limits but his albumin levels are very low. I am told that this could be caused by infection (he currently has the jaw abscess showing its ugly face again) or it could be liver disease :( Has anyone on this forum had experience of this with any of their piggies? I am a nervous wreck

Sorry I have no experience/advice, but I hope Wilf recovers fully & quickly, fingers crossed its more from the abscess than anything more complicated.

TLC & truckloads of healing vibes being sent your way
Love to Annie the paw holding warm water bottle too

If it gets diagnosed as the abscess, would your vet try Zitheromax antibiotics to clear it up quicker? It's the 'big guns' in the infected abscess world!

Have you tried the Porridge oats to try and put some weight on him?
Hope his new box of sachet food has arrived now?

Big hug and keep your chin up, Christmas and a poorly furball is so stressful, look after yourself ♥ xx

I'm sorry I've not had experience with liver disease in guinea pigs, lots with humans ! I hope Wilf improves.i agree with the above poster Zithromax is best for abscesses.sending you my support at this time.x

I would definitely see about a thyroidectomy for Wilf as thyrotoxicosis usually just gives them a few months. I have had 3 on Thyronorm and all passed away within 4 months. Then I finally got our vet to do a thyroidectomy after I met some from this form at the meet at Manchester in 2017. Her guinea pig was given a thyroidectomy by her vet in Preston and he fully recovered in weeks. Our vet has since done this op about 10 time and they all survived apart from one who had a heart attack.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The liver support recipe is an eye-opener, but I will start googling ingredients tonight!
Thanks GPTV for the kind wishes and suggestions. I did try banana mashed with porridge but he wasn't impressed :( but he might change his mind another day. I came away from the vet with Mitranidozole and Azithromycin and Loxicom and hope these frighten the abscess away. We have another appt at the vets next Thursday.

I hoped I wouldn't have to post this, but I think my beautiful Wilf may have to be helped over the bridge when we see Ellie tomorrow. I have spent the last 2 days cuddling him and crying. He is still eating well but getting weaker. My heart is breaking.

Oh no Glenda. I’m so sorry to hear this. You always know when it’s time I think. It doesn’t make it any easier. See what Ellie has to say tomorrow.

But it’s the kindest thing we can do sometimes. Sending you buckets full of love. He knows how much you love him. x

I’m so sorry Wilf is no better. Such a hard decision to make. He knows he’s loved and he’s had the best life ever. Take care. ❤️
