Help for Gus. Metacam dosage and advice

Sounds like that’s the plan when you take him back tomorrow? What time is your appointment?

Well had two MLS today so far ...doesn't want syringe in mouth yet goes towards like he wants it but is grinding teeth and moving jaw side to side..taking him ages to take 1 ml. Given fibreplex today too

Have you been able to get any more syringe feed into him since you posted this?

So from your updates it might not be his teeth but they’d have to sedate to check for sure but they don’t think he’d survive that?

So they’re giving metacam and antibiotics to hopefully stabilise him to hopefully get stronger and gain weight? That makes sense. In that case focus on the metacam dose (really push for dog metacam twice a day) and more intensive care and go from there.
Thank you. I do have dog loxicom here aswell if I need to give that instead but will need to check dosage for his weight

Sleeping now

What gut stimulation did you use?
We got something called Emeprid which is quite commonly prescribed. It encourages the gut to keep moving - it contains metoclopramide. One girl had 0.2ml every 6 hours, another had 1ml every 8... there is a range of active doses and it will all depend on piggy's problems, weight, other meds etc. I will say the irl who had the 0.2ml it didn't seem to make any difference to her.

Just try and keep him going while the ABs start to work. Even just for 24 hours after you started them because they'll be working from the first dose but they need time to get any bacterial load down. There are other painkillers that can be used by the vet - injectables etc if they think he's in a lot of pain. When did all this start - days ago or weeks ago? Do you know if its something fast and aggressive or something that's been creeping on for a while.

Poor, lovely boy - we'll be praying for you x

It's been creeping. We stepped in immediately with critical care.

When he comes out he seems full of life, running off, keep coming syringe away. Then in cage he looks so sad.

That really is an extremely low dose of metacam which will hardly be touching his pain, unfortunately with some vets you've got to be a little bit forceful with suggestions. Let them know you have seen other people be prescribed far higher doses and you're concerned his pain isn't being managed, could they please look into the newer research regarding dosages for guinea pigs and rabbits. If they won't, ask could you be prescribed a second painkiller to be used alongside the metacam. Tramadol, gabapentin or buprenorphine are good options.

Youre doing a great job with him, feeding so often is incredibly difficult and hopefully not necessary if his pain could be controlled properly.
It may also be worth asking whether they feel giving him a motility medication such as emeprid would help with his appetite.

My Edward was on a low dose of cat metacam and it wasn’t touching the pain. He’s now on dog metacam and tramadol for a tooth root abscess and doing much better.

Sorry, I’m not sure what dosage he’s on as my friend is currently looking after him and my other piggies as we go on holiday on Monday

Ok thanks. What dosage do you think he should be on?

As an example, I currently have a 1200g girl on 1ml of dog metacam twice a day on top of a second painkiller too (this also isn't keeping her comfortable, and I have another appointment in a few hours for her to try something else as I'm lucky enough to have a great vet willing to take suggestions)
But that would be far too much for your little man as its dosed by weight, but it shows just how small the dose you've been given is hopefully.

Sorry to change the subject but is this for her arthritis pain?

No she has interstitial cystitis, although I have a slightly smaller girl on a similar dose for arthritis which is just about keeping her comfortable.

Thank you. Poor girl, I’ve had two piggies with interstitial cystitis :( As far as I know, Edwards arthritis is only slight at this stage but I’ll need to discuss appropriate pain relief with my vet when he comes home

I have a 1.2kg piggy whose dose is 0.4ml of dog loxicom twice a day for a tooth root abscess. Hopefully that will help your vet in making the decision. Good luck.

He's just had 5 MLS of critical and 4 MLS of water melon juice Plus fibreplex and 0.14 of metacam as vet said give one dose this morning now and one at midnight

Has he had his vet appointment today?
If so, what did they say about next steps?

Did you do his weight check this morning?

Weight is 650g. Next step increase metacam. Keep syringe. Not strong enough to go under. They rang specialist vet who agreed. ?

Did they give you any idea of what they needed to see in terms of declaring him strong enough for treatment? A particular weight for example?

Did they increase his metacam dose?

Much stronger weight and heart and eating more syringe feeds. Can access sat morning at vets or emergency vets if gets worse. They liked the idea of melon juice. Said puree mint too. He's unable to hold much in mouth and definitely struggling to pass foods or drink through front of mouth. He did use his water bottle on his own last night quite a bit though
