Eddie doesn't quite seem himself

Wow that's great Odin didn't need to have the eye removed! What was done to his eye instead?

Thanks 😊 I'll probably be asking lots of questions 😂
Ask away! Very happy to help 🙂

He was on several medications (apologies if I don't quite remember all of them). We treated the infection behind eye with Zithromax (which he tolerated really well). He also had two different eye drops, three times a day. And he was on pain killer (Loxicom). When the eye initially popped out I asked Debbie at TEAS for advice (she was amazing), and I went straight to the chemist to get some Viscotears, which really helped to stop the eye from drying out. The eye responded well to antibiotics and reduced in size within a week. By the end of the week it was back into the socket. He had some inflammation (the white we could see in his eye) for a couple of weeks after that but it also soon cleared. My poor little boy must have had all of that pressure in behind they eye and that was why he wasn't eating and the teeth were growing. With dental work after the eye healed, his teeth very quickly returned to normal. I'll have a look to see if I can find the before and after pics for you :)

So in Odin's case the teeth problems were caused by the eye problems?
Sorry yes, I think I put that in the post before the one with the pics? Sorry I put two posts on at the same time 🙈
Yes, he wasn’t eating because of the eye abscess, so the teeth kept growing. Same when piggies have another issue going on that reduces appetite so the teeth grow. It’s very easy to get caught in a viscous circle

Ohh I understand now. Sorry yes you did put that in the first post I just wanted to make sure I'd understood it right :)
What have your vets said about a treatment plan? Kim and Simon said that they would remove the eye if it didn't heal, but luckily Odin responded to the antibiotics (he was very very weak at that point to be having surgery anyway).

Sorry should’ve thought to tag you @Bradshaw Piggies  Been a long morning! Was very different with Pedro and my experience xx
No don't worry! We did have very different experiences. And I can't thank you and Debbie enough for all of the support you gave me throughout Odin's troubles! 💕 xx

Sorry to hear about Eddie's problems. Have fingers firmly crossed for him.
Sending you both big hugs.xx

I haven't been given a proper plan yet as Nathalie needed to go away and look at the CT result. I'm expecting her to call tomorrow morning to go through what she wants to do in more detail.

Thank you 😊

Just caught up with this.
Poor Eddie - he really is going through the mill.
At least he will have the best possible care and commitment from you.
Merab was completely blind for the last years of her life ( cataracts) and it didn’t cause her any problems.
Hope that with all the treatment Eddie makes a full recovery.
Holding you in my thoughts

Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot 💕

I've found a way to get more Emeraid into Eddie! I made it thicker to see if he liked it better like that and he's does. He didn't fight against it all and happily lapped up 6.5ml with no fuss at all. That's the most I've got into him in one go :D
That's brilliant. Keep going. you are doing an amazing job!

Nathalie has now called, everything she suspected had been confirmed so Eddie is going in for surgery at 8:30am tomorrow with Elvis for company. She will have to removed his eye and the whole molar in one operation so there will not be a link from his mouth to his eye as this would likely cause infections and more problems. However it sounds like that will be difficult so she doesn't know if she will be able to do it until she tries.

This tooth is also a different one to the last one that caused him problems last time and his teeth are just not good in general. They're not lined up or where they should be meaning he will never be able to grind them down on his own as he should. Even if everything goes to plan with this surgery he will need regular intervention to keep the rest of his teeth in check.

It's what I expected but not at all what I was hoping for. I'm so worried about him there's so much that could go wrong but all I can do is keep feeding and medicating him and wait.

On a very small plus side he seems stronger and perkier than you'd think such a poorly piggy would be. Obviously not healthy but better than l you'd expect. He has enthusiastically eaten grass and continued to fight against the Emeraid (him liking it was a fluke).

So sorry to hear that he’s facing surgery. Eye removal surgery does very often go well and piggies can recover really well. Unfortunately due to their anatomy it is the only way to get to the teeth and roots (through the eye); unlike in other species where access is easier.

Debbie and TEAS and @alpacasqueak were amazing in supporting me with Odin’s eye issues. I’m sure they can offer some amazing advice to support you with Eddie’s aftercare and recovery.

We are all thinking of you both and sending lots of love 💕 hopefully Eddie’s problems will be solved once and for all .
Here if you need us!

Fingers very firmly crossed!

Please keep in mind that whatever happens, you have done and continue to your utmost for him. That is all you can do; the rest is our of your hands. Eddie couldn't have found a more loving and dedicated home. In many places, he wouldn't have lived for as long - and hopefully for a goodly while longer. ;)

I can't tell you how much that means to me, thank you so so much 🥰 🥰
Good luck Eddie x
Thank you

Sorry that it's not the news you were hoping for, even if was expected.
Will be holding you in my thoughts tomorrow.
Hope all goes well.
Hugs

Massive hugs @Eddie & Elvis, so sorry it’s not what you were hoping for but I’m sure Eddie will feel much better once it’s done like my guys did! Jess was nearly 7 and Pedro was 8 when they had their ops and got through them really well, hope the same for gorgeous Eddie. Will be thinking of you both today :hug:xx
