Dental for Trixie

So when are they going to deal with the issue? She can’t be left like this. The teeth will just get worse and worse! 😢
I know. The vet has to find someone to do it. I expect she's already spoken to my dad about it. She won't leave it too long.

Where abouts in the UK are you?
Is there absolutely no way you can get her an appointment with Kim/Simon Maddock in Northampton?

Unfortunately many small animal vets are not specialist in pigs (as said earlier, the term 'small animal vet' simply means not farm animals/horses). I have an excellent dog vet whom I really trust, but they had no idea when it came to guinea pigs; so I traveled mine to Kim and Simon (Manchester to Northampton).

Really hope she gets sorted soon 🤞

So we're thinking we might have to...you know. Its not just her mouth, its her foot as well. She can barely walk and she's permanently hungry. The vet was surprised about her front teeth and they would have to do another dental and an x ray to see what was going on. She's not happy and she stays in the house all the time. I don't want to, but it's what's best for her.

Would you consider surrendering Trixie to TEAS? @furryfriends (TEAS) do you have room at the inn?

TEAS is a special place where dental piggies can live their best lives with amazing care by Debbie and any necessary vets trips to the amazing Simon/Kim at the Cat and Rabbit vets.
I'll see what the vet says first. I don't want to lose either way.

We would be able to offer a permanent place for Trixie! I know you’d probably prefer not to surrender her, but I want you to know there is a place here if she needs it xx

I'm so sorry you might have to make this decision. ❤
I'm not sure if it was recommended earlier, but are any of these vets available to you? Recommended Guinea Pig Vets
If you would consider it, TEAS is an incredible charity for owners in situations such as yourself.
Big hugs, everyone on the forum understands how tough this must be for you. Xx

I know you're trying to help, but I'd prefer to sort her myself. The vets will do an x ray and then a referral if that's needed. We might be able to fix her as yet. I don't want to lose her either way.

You are in a really difficult position. I really hope you and your vet can fix her. I really do 🤞. You’ve got to know you’ve done all you can for her. A dental piggy is such a big responsibility. I know you’d rather Trixie go to TEAS rather than the rainbow bridge. We are all here for you. Sending you a massive hug 🤗.

It's great that your vets are considering a referral :)
I really hope that the X Ray helps them understand what's going on and think about possible treatments.
There are plenty of positive threads on here about piggies with long-term dental issues (many of which TEAS nursed back to health, and I'm sure she'll be happy to discuss the ins and out of this with you. Not in a rehoming sense necessarily, just in a support-across-the-internet way.)

Oh yeah, I wouldn't mind help across the Internet, I just don't want to rehome her if I can avoid it. But honestly, she's in a state. I wouldn't mind betting neurological stuff going on, cause 2 of her sisters died of strokes and the other lost weight and died before anyone could work out what was going on. She's got cystic ovaries as well as whatever is wrong with her foot and teeth.

Guinea pigs teeth overgrow in two weeks.Dentals less than 6 weeks will leave your guinea pig in a compromised position.
You do need to find vet that can do guinea pigs teeth.
We can only suggest to you,but please look at the recommended vet list.
I wish you luck going forward.

I'm not leaving her that long. If my vets don't get back tomorrow, then I'll have to find another one. I'll have to work out where the recommended vets are and then go to the closest if mine don't get back.

I don't want anyone here thinking I'm some sort of selfish person because of the trixie situation. I really am trying. I'm up the vets every day trying to sort her. The bills now up to £800 because of everything and she's still not sorted. I'm considering other vets. My VETS are considering other vets. But the cats and rabbit place is far too far. It's like 3 hours just to get there. There must be others vets on the list that are closer. I'll check. I'm not an irresponsible owner.

The guinea pig vet in Matlock, also does teeth ,that's North Derbyshire. I know you are really trying.we just want to give you options if it helps.
It's very difficult.
I'm not sure where you are in the uk,so others members maybe able to suggest some vets that have done guinea pig dentals.

In the east. Essex. But I know essex is a big place too. I'm north central

We definitely don’t think you are selfish at all. You are doing an amazing job. Trixie is lucky to have you helping her.

It’s just so frustrating that vets aren’t that piggy savvy. I had a vet last week prescribe my Pepper penicillin! That could have killed him. I was so cross.

They are knowledgeable, just not with this much of a problem. Like before, it was regular dental. Now it's like mystery why have her teeth gone like that, why is her foot weird. You know. I think it's just past their knowledge.

I watched her walk and the right side is weaker. She stumbles on the right side and as I said, her front right foot doesn't move very well at all.
I think the vet trimmed her teeth, and then she didn't grind them, causing them to grow and misallign the rest of her mouth. I think theres a definate issue with the right hand side of her body, like a mild stroke or something. Even her eye goes downwards. Her sisters died of strokes. (I presume Luna did, she could've just died)
Obviously I'll tell the vet all this and they'll decide the best for her.

No way do we think you are being selfish. It’s clear how much you love Twixie and you’re doing everything you can for her. We’re just trying to offer advice and support. It’s such a difficult situation to be in as I have been there myself

I really do hope you and your vet can come up with a solution x

no judgement from anyone on the forum, the fact that you are posting on here shows that you care. Sometimes a typed message can come across as a little brusque but people are trying to give you options that you may not have considered.

Sending big hugs, I am sorry you are in this awful situation.

I have had a dental piggie and I can assure you that the best and most experienced vet in the country for dental work is Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic. I think you will really struggle finding a vet who can help your little piggie as Guinea pig dentistry is one of those very specialised treatments and few vets get it right. I used to travel 300 miles each way to get treatment for my Ted every 6 weeks, we live in the West of Cornwall. Believe me if I could have found a decent vet who could carry out Guinea pig dentals properly without a 600 mile round trip I would have but unfortunately there isn’t one

Please do reconsider the possibility of handing her over to TEAS, they are life savers and Debbie is so dedicated to caring for them and pulling them back from the brink, have a read if her website. With Debbie’s care and Simon’s experience I’m sure they can between them give Trixi a decent quality of life

But the teeth aren't just the issue anymore. That's what I'm saying. There's something wrong with her entire body. She's stumbling about. There's nothing to say she'd survive another anesthetic for the dental and the x ray.
I'm going to call the vets again and see if they have any news.

The stumbling could be a secondary problem as a result of malnutrition from her teeth problems?
Hope you get some answers from your vet 🤞🏻

I'm so sorry that you're struggling with your poor piggy and her various health issues. You are obviously a very caring owner who's just having an incredibly difficult time. I just wanted to send you hugs and best wishes for finding a vet that can give you some answers.
