Daisy's Ovary removal

Well what do they said 1 step forward 2 steps back... daisy barely ate in the night- well if you dont count the newspaper she smacked on!

Not interested in veg this morning..
So just had a nice battle getting some cc down her... I've tried to tempt her with everything I have!

Really sorry that Daisy isn't doing so well today. I hope she starts to feel better soon. Sending her healing vibes. xx

Oh no, poor little Daisy. I always give mine a loo roll tube or two when they’re on antibiotics/meds as they like to have a munch on it if they have an upset tummy, with her eating the newspaper she may have a bit of a funny tum from the meds?
Is she having the 1ml of metacam all in one go? Its a good idea to split it into two doses per day if you aren’t already.
Big hugs, hope she feels better soon ❤️x

Yes, I suspect it is from the antibiotic (Metronidazole) but today is day 5 so it is stopping today..

She has been having Loxicom 1ml twice a day - but I was under dosing her for the first 2 1/2 days  but she is also on another pain medication (Gabapentin)

She is also on Cisapride & Metoclopramide (started Friday as she was a bit gassy)

I have now popped a toilet roll tube in! She had some c.c at lunch time - a bit of fresh grass and a dandelion i found in the garden! But has isn't showing much interest in anything else....

Hopefully when the antibiotics end her tummy will feel a bit better.. I so tired from worrying about her..

How are things today @artcasper ?
Not great.... she just isn't showing any interest in hay! Been giving critical care 4 times a day, breakfast, lunch, dinner and before I go to bed... she will eat grass if I feed it her or leave some in front of her but ignored it earlier in the cage. I have not put her back with the other 2 yet as she seems so weak so I don't know what to do for the best 😢 it's so draining and tiring and stressful.. as everyone on here knows... trying to tempt her but she has eaten a lettuce leaf too...

Sorry for all the questions. Has she finished her ABs yet? Can she go back in a divided cage with the others?

Antibiotics were stopped Saturday... so I was hoping she would perk up.. last time.we tried to divide the cage Brownie and winny used to run head first into it..but maybe that is the only option at the moment 😪

I have divided the cage... they are all trying to bite the bars! Once I know daisy is eating I can remove it...

Well the divider lasted an hour 😪 I am currently sat on watch to see if they settle.
Poor daisy still hasn't eaten any hay and is huddled in a corner.. I feel so bad..

Thanks everyone for your continued kindness..

Today has been a better day.. I saw every hour last night..I slept on the sofa just incase there were any fights.. just a few scuffles so thats good.

Daisy weighed 900g this morning.. I am syringe feeding 4 times a day ( daytime ) and get approx 15ml into her .. this has helped maintain her weight over the day.. I couldn't tell if she was pooing but today when I picked her up she had done a bit of a sloppy one..not runny runny but not quite solid.. she has only been eating tiny bits of veg so I don't really want to stop that...

You're doing a magnificent job keeping Daisy's weight up. I know how utterly exhausting it is to syringe feed. I'm so glad she's a little better. Keep up the eating and pooing for your mum Daisy

It is tiring but getting easier the more I do it.. she now has a bit of sloppy poo so I am covered in poo, hair and critical care...

You are doing so well.it is emotionally draining syringe feeding a guinea pig 4 hourly.i hope she slowly makes progress, and gets back to being with her companions.

omg you poor thing. Ironically my Daisy is going in for the same op next Tuesday. i have been dreading it. I hope your Daisy improves. It’s a horrible time isnt it? Sending lots of healing vibes. Xx

I’m sorry Daisy’s post operative health has been so up and down! My guinea pig Clover was just spayed about a month ago and was similar to your Daisy. She would eat hay, and a bit of lettuce, then stop. I saw you said that you were getting about 15 ml of critical care in her per day. I know it’s a battle (Clover fought me so hard!) but if you can, I would try to get ~60 ml in her daily. I was probably getting 15 ml into Clover after the first few days post op and didn’t notice a change in her appetite until I increased the amount of critical care. Once I started giving about 60 ml she began eating on her own more and I was able to wean her off after a day or two at 60 ml. I wonder if an increase in critical care plus the Metoclopramide will do the trick for Daisy? Best of luck!

Hi...I am getting approximately 15ml in her 4 times a day so about 60ml...she has been on the Metoclopramide since last Friday 14th...she was a but gassy when we had her post op check. I have never had to deal with post op care so it's a bit of a shock especially when Daisy is the hungriest pig ever - it's hard to see and to feel the body feeling smaller.. did Clover make a good recovery? Its been a week & 1 day now..

Get all you need beforehand & get plenty of rest now! I hope your Daisy's op goes well.. my daisy's would have been less stressful if the intended op had gone to plan I.e not going through her tummy but things change.... If she hasn't had syringe feeding before have a go now with a bit water...all the best. Let us know how she gets on xx

Thanks for this. She is a foodie but good idea re getting her used to syringe feeding. I don’t think she has had critical care before. She has metacam permanently for another condition and thinks the syringe is the best thing ever So let’s hope her attitude stays the same! The trouble is she is tiny at 900g (just the way she is built and she is very fit because she is so active) but she doesn’t have any spare weight to lose.

The vet did also warn me about the flank op and that they may have to change course if the ovaries are too large. I keep mulling over if she really has to have it but she is stressed and unhappy and I just have to do it I guess.

how is your Daisy today? Gawd they stress us don’t they! X

Ah thats good that she is used to the syringe already! Daisy has lost a total of 100g in a week so she is feeling very skinny and its hard to feel her bony bits... She has moments of looking fine and nibbling hay and then she is just sat looking at the side of hay tray or burying herself under as much hay as she can.... I have an appointment with the vet friday and a phone call tomorrow.. not much else to do really i don't think other than carry on keeping her weight up.. My Stress levels are up big time - my bP is high so this isn't helping at all! x

Sorry about that, I must have misread your post and didn’t see the the 4x daily! Clover did make a good recovery - it took about a week for her body to figure itself out. Post op care is so hard, I feel for you. It’s so time consuming and stressful. I was a wreck during that week when Clover was healing. How are Daisy’s poops? It took about a week for Clover’s to normalize - they were either small, mushy, smelly, or clumped together when her gut was still stabilizing itself. I wish I had more advice to give you on how to get Daisy to eat more. If she’s willing you could try to encourage her to eat cecotrophs? Even though it’s gross, you could try to hand feed her the poop since she probably won’t want to tuck under herself to eat them from her bum. They’re so nutritious that that will also be a tool to help normalize her tummy. I’m hoping for you that the continued 60 ml and Metoclopramide will do the trick. You and Daisy have been through a lot!

I was so happy this afternoon to see Daisy go to the water bottle and get some water by herself - 1st time since her operation that she has gone for the water bottle ( i have been syringing her water )....

She showed interest at dinner time when I went to the cage - i don't want to jinx things but am hoping we have turned a corner... Her weight has not dropped all day - fingers crossed!

Sometimes we have to celebrate the smallest achievement. But to hear that she has decided she’s thirsty and then gone to the water bottle to get a drink is a big step. If she’s maintaining her weight then she’s obviously eating sufficient. I have everything crossed, I know how exhausted you must be x
