COVID-19 Coronavirus

We were thinking of going on holiday this year, but to be honest we’ve decided not to risk it. It may be extreme but we’d rather not! My dad is in his 80s (although he’s healthy and no underlying issues) and we have lots of other elderly relatives we don’t want to risk passing it on to. There’s also been a confirmed case in the country next door.

There will always be what if's but if you are quarantined and an issue occurs just call your vet & take advice.

I'm not worried about my pigs at all and there is absolutely no reason to be unless something presents itself to you and at that point, you deal with it and call the vet.

I have family members who are elderly (as many do) who are not worried at all. In fact a member of my family is a senior consultant in the NHS and following a chat yesterday it is clear that the underlying health conditions stated in the media of those who have passed had existing conditions which were already incredibly serious (they wont tell you that). It doesnt make it any less sad that folks have passed but its very important to keep things in perspective. We should be vigilant & take sensible precautions for ourselves but the media and conspiracy theorists have alot to answer for in stirring up panic.

Yeah I'm less worried about actual coronavirus and more worried about being in quarentine, 2 of my animals have ongoing health issues so I worry one would need a vet trip and we'd be in quarentine if that makes sense, also if Sam misses work we are financially screwed 😕

That is correct, Vaccinating against the flu means hospitals will have less cases of flu to deal with.

Vaccinations work twofold the protect the individual vaccinated. But they also protect society as a whole as there are fewer people with an illness walking around to transmit it to others.
 
I haven't read through this whole thread so I apologise if I'm repeating anything but

I'm not worried about me getting it. Having to self isolate isn't an issue...minor mental health issues mean I know what I'm doing at that point. I get most of my shopping delivered precisely so I don't have to deal with crowds in Tesco anyway. My biggest issue would probably be the caffeine withdrawals :no:
That said whilst I don't have major underlying issues I am on medication that can affect how I breathe. So far that hasn't happened yet but it is always a worry. I don't have to worry about flu quite so much because my GP insisted I get the flu jab in December for reasons I still don't know, but hey, why not right?
There's always a panic about something. Swine flu, SARS, Ebola...but somehow Covid-19 hits our shores and all hell breaks loose. Reading comments on news articles about it is interesting to say the least. They tend to swap between how this is a plague that's gonna wipe us all out and it's all Italy's fault (seriously, not China, but Italy) to how it'll be just like the flu, except these are people that think flu is just a slightly worse than usual cold. Flu kills enough people each year and attitudes like both of those reactions are the reason stuff like this happens, because we downplay the severity of one thing because it's "normal" but something new comes round and it's scary because we've forgotten how bad things can get.

I get that completely- I'm in between contracts currently and its a dire situation. Hoping the budget will bring some good news shortly. If you are really worried perhaps you can get additional medication from your vet for existing health issues just incase just to tide you over for a couple of weeks? No harm in asking.

Thankyou I'm pretty stocked up on medicine thankfully, only one I may need to order more of is tramadol 💕

Ours is out of pasta too and rice. And it's a huge tesco extra aswell lol
 
Local co-op are out of hand sanitisers, hand wash & have very little toilet rolls left. They have now introduced a 3 per customer mix and match system on toilet roll, hand wash and various other cleaning products.

Only thing I need to buy at weekend is usual weekend shopping such as bread, milk etc.
 
Limited amounts per person doesn't work, whats stopping me sending everyone in that I live with, to buy 1 packet each for the same household

I would not worry about your piggies. There is actually very little that rodents and humans can pass on to each other. Flu, human viral colds and corona virus are not one of these. Just use normal good hygiene (hand washing) and common sense (don't cuddle or cage clean while you are not feeling well).

Keep in mind that you are much more likely to just feel somewhat grotty for a few days unless you are having some serious underlying health issues or are older. Just make sure as a precaution that you have got other people you are in contact with who can take over if necessary and provide for the piggies.
As long as they are being fed and watered at least once daily they can survive a few days of mild neglect and uncleaned cages just fine! If you are in self-confinement, just shake out the fleece into a bin bag for piggy waste in your room and store in another one for washing afterwards or put it back in the cage if it is not heavily soiled.The measures are not there to protect the piggies so much as to minimise the spread to other people you are in contact with. ;)

It's not meant to be a bulletproof plan. It's like sending in someone of age to buy alcohol, cigarettes or something else age restricted, when they're buying for someone underage. You have to be certain you don't get seen with the person doing the purchasing or the transaction gets shut down immediately because there's no guarantee somebody underage isn't gonna get something they shouldn't.

Family of 4 - two parents, two children. You'd have to send each person in separately because if you're seen together in store then it can be treated as one transaction instead of several. It's a lot of work to send everyone in separately so nobody gets seen together and that's a lot of effort most people aren't willing to properly think through.

There will always be people who work to come up with a way around the system.
To be honest the same person could change their shirt and walk in 4 times, and I doubt any of the overworked cashiers would notice or care.

Restrictions are put in place to appeal tho the large percentage of the population who are reasonable and will take the time to understand the reasons behind it and be respectful, rather than just come up with ways to buy unlimited amounts of items that they don't even need.

There are always idiots who panic and overreact but who do not think things through - all the sanitiser and toilet rolls in the world will not fully protect them from contracting the virus; they can only slow down the process when the virus is passing through the community. And the more they are leaving the rest of their community unprotected, the more likely they are to be infected - and put potentially other lives at risk in the process.
If everybody is playing by the rules, then there is still enough left to go round and to be produced. Compounding headless panic buying with even more panic buying won't help to make things better.

What I really object to are the ones who have stolen from the NHS supplies!

I wish I could say I was surprised this had happened, but I'm not. Sad, but not surprised. Some people really can't think beyond themselves and what "they deserve" and those are the same people who will whine when the NHS doesn't have enough money to treat people appropriately. Massive cognitive disconnection there. Where do they think the money goes if not on replacing supplies that thieves helped themselves to?

Except a bunch of them probably don't even think of it as stealing.

I tried making pasta for the first time from scratch but made the mistake of doing it close to tea time with 2 hungry kids. It went very wrong & ended up in the bin 😂 fish fingers to the rescue!

Flour (ideally pasta flour, which is is also in short supply - are people expecting to live in isolation until summer?), salt, water and - if wished - an egg.

I did get a pasta maker for my birthday but it is quite a lengthy process.

You do not need a pasta machine if you don't mind cutting shapes by hand.
Or replace the pasta with quinoa, couscous or similar grains, which the panic buyers have thankfully mostly overlooked!

I actually prefer rice, being an Asian. But sometimes, when I crave to have a spaghetti, I cook it. I don't like buying ready made bolognese coz it tastes bland to me. 😂 So I cook my own. I just haven't made a fresh pasta myself! :D
 
Caught five minutes of the news earlier. Interesting to see how the contact tracing works for people who have got the virus. I can see how that alone can be a lengthy process determing who is low risk/high risk depending on how long they have been in contact with the person - within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes I think it was.
 
This is reminding me of the petrol shortage we had in the winter of 2000 when supplies to supermarkets were disrupted. Bread and milk, loo roll, tins and pasta went flying off the shelves. Bread makers and strong flour were then next to become as scarce as hens teeth! When will folk ever learn to just carry on with their normal shopping routines and then there wouldn’t be a problem.

Yea people are stealing from the end of hospital beds in Northampton General hospital, my grandad is in there now, and there's no sanitiser for the nurses to use at times. Selfish

Were all business as normal here, ii haven't stocked up on anything at all 😂 in fact we're running low on a few things 🙈 people are clearing the shelves of baby formula 🤷‍♀️ all babies need to eat! I breastfeed so it doesn't effect us but all babies need milk, parents shouldn't be clearing the shelves! 🙄 Nappies too 🙄
On a side note, bad cold with fever (my 6yo) not been abroad so I'm not anymore worried than the fact she really isn't well, she went to school today as teacher said it was OK business as normal they are keen to keep attendance up, but she's come home worse, should I keep her home tomorrow if she's no better? Temps been 39+ and she's so pale and tired
 
Stealing from the NHS is absolutely horrendous! The worst of the worst 😩 when I was pregnant I was high risk and had to go to the hospital weekly, they used to make us do a urine sample but they had to start giving us cardboard bowls to wee in because people were stealing the wee sample bottles 😱 who on earth steals wee sample bottles!

I would keep her home for sure.
A fever really takes it out of kids, and I find a day or two of laying on the sofa with a bit of fuss and lots of hot drinks helps them get over it much quicker than soldiering on with school and activites.
Hope she feels better soon.

I think that's exactly what she needs, her younger siblings are at childcare tomorrow (if they're not sick) so she'll have all the attention to herself aside from the furbies but they'll make a fuss of her too 🙈 if she makes a miraculous recovery she can go but if she's still bad tomorrow she can stay home, she's a trooper but the teacher promised she'd call if she got worse but she didn't and she come home so poorly today 😔
