I have noticed over the past few weeks at her weekly check Betsy has crusty nipples. Her behaviour has not changed in any way she is still the lovely cantakerous lady that she's always been. They have always been elongated compared to Megs I just took it that that is how she is made. Should I take her to the vet for a check up?

Sending you hugs, these piggies are such a worry at times - if it's not one it's another!

Cheese had crusty nipples but she was also constantly in season too before her legs stopped working. I'd keep an eye on it for now but if you notice her behaviour changing I'd definitely get her checked out x

Does it clean away? Nugget had crusty nipples that would clean away then come back then she started getting crazy hormonal so we elected to a keyhole spay, she didn't have any actual cysts though she was just making marshmallows life hell with her hormones!
If it's worrying you, you could have a vet check, if she has cysts you can then make a plan and decide if to monitor first etc and if she doesn't it's reassurance for you 😊
Hugs these piggies are such a worry! 💕

Probably worth a vet check if this has persisted for a couple of weeks, hopefully it is "saggy boob chafing" like Jezzy floof has nothing more serious! Always best to be on the safe side though, if cysts are a possibility, especially for a more mature lady... Jezzy sends Betsy kisses and says she hopes she just needs a better fitting bra and some gorgeous guineas moisturiser! X

I have a vet check.
If nothing’s wrong at least you’ll be reassured an if it is something you’ve caught it quickly.

My herd send love to beautiful Betsy and hope there’s nothing to worry about

I would recommend a check. It sounds like an ovarian cyst. It is a common misapprehension that you need to get the full complement of symptoms - in fact, that only happens in a minority of cases. I've had it only in one of my sows so far...

Hope Betsy gets on ok at the vets
My 6yr old Ellie had reoccurring uti's & heavy bleeding from her genitals, but no hair loss or crusty nipples (never wore a bra either - oh the shame of it! :shh::gp:)

She had a conscious ultrasound & we found a walnut sized cyst.

Ellie ended up having Chorulon hormone (HCG) injections which worked brilliantly for 12 months (cyst reduced & only one bad bleed afterwards, but never again) & then another round of injections 12 months after that.

If it turns out to be ovarian cysts ask the vet to see if the injections could be an option?

Some Guineas they work for & others they don't.
Xx

Crusty nipnips have been one of the first things ive noticed with my lot, even when theres been no/very little questionable behaviours. Fingers firmly crossed for her appointment. They're such a worry, these older ladies arent they, I'm currently eyeballing Ebony quite hard...she's been pretty rumbly lately but I really dont want a 4th spay so soon after all the others, it's getting a little silly! I'm sure my vet is going to ban me from coming in soon 😅

Just out of interest, with quite a few sows being spayed to help the ovarian cyst problems, how much do vets charge to spay a female 🤔? I know prices vary

Hope the vet trip goes well for Betsy.

@Piggylove82 - I can’t remember exactly how much I paid for a spay but my memory says it was around the £150 - £180 mark, including the meds to bring home and 2 follow up visits at 3 and 10 days.

Hope all goes well for her at the vets. My Jess also gets a crusty nipple (she’s only got the one!) but thankfully my vet just thinks it’s dry skin and much better with cleans and GG’s cream like @PigglePuggle ’s Jezebel! Hoping the same for gorgeous Betsy :)

Well Betsy is booked on for a spay on April 17th. Couldn't do it any earlier in case there complications and all the Piggies are going to the Boarders over Easter.

The vet Alfonso looked at her crusty nipples and felt a small lump under one of them and immediately looked at her sides and there is significant hair loss there. I didn't tell him about that as I wanted to see if he knew his stuff. He said he couldn't feel anything in her tummy and he gave her quite a thorough poke and prod which Betsy quite rightly objected to and half climbed up me while being examined.

Alfonso said that as she was showing the classic signs of ovarian cysts and she has a small pea sized lump in her nipple, it's best she has a spay and they will remove the lump at the same time all for the grand total of £150.

Well it sounds like the vet knows his stuff, and hopefully an early spay before any big cysts can be felt is the best option! Sending hugs and good luck wheeks, I hope the beautiful Betsy got plenty reward veggies for all the poking and prodding! X

Glad to hear the vet knows what he is doing.
Wish lovely Betsy the best.

Oh bless the baby girl. 💕 Wishing you both all the luck in the world.
