Bann's eye

I thought about that ! Well done both of you ! You both need a bit lettuce to recover 😂

I had it down to 5 seconds last time  but no Metacam chaser this time. I didn't ask about it actually because I'm pretty sure he doesn't need any although he might beg to differ (once you'd remind him it's the tasty stuff anyway).

He's doing decent, to be fair to him, mostly just sulking about it, how dare I pick him up?! He's almost comical about it, but he also almost fell out of the tent in his haste to get his breakfast pepper (nothing wrong with his mouth or appetite).

His eye's still looking clear which is good. And he's taking more interest in his surroundings - yesterday at the vets after they put the dye in, then yesterday when I took those photos and even today. Curiosity getting the better of him.

Repetition and practice helps; if he can survive the experience, scamper away and end up with an eye that is not hurting then that is sinking in that bit more each time. The biggest challenge is breaking him out of his blind prey animal instincts. ;)

It was interesting to watch him with the dye - first time he freaked out the minute it went in, the second the dye was fine but he wouldn't tolerate the torch and I was expecting similar yesterday. Instead he let them use the torch, then let them dab off the excess dye and when they came back with the torch, kept cranking his head forward. Both torches were fine but the way he stretched out his neck it's like he was trying to smell something.

I mean it figures. Eye feels weird, what smells are about that might relate?

I wish he'd pack it in with the kamikaze stunts though. Putting him into anything backwards doesn't always work because he has himself turned round so fast. He knows when he's going home and I can do nothing to stop that.

I'd lose less if he'd stop moving his head right as I squeeze the tube. And then I look at him and ask him why and he just...settles back down, only to repeat just as I get the tube to squeeze. You'll never convince me he doesn't know what he's up to :))

I can't find the other Bann vet thread so I'll use this one because it's exactly as it was in May.

I've cleaned up the blood as best I can without stressing him further and he's in for 14:15, but that swelling in his eyelid is concerning me. He's got no luck with that left eye of his at all.

I feel so bad for him, both because his eye apparently has it in for him this last 6 months but also because I didn't see anything til it got this bad. I feel like I should've seen it coming. Argh.

Please don't bash yourself up. With guinea pigs, things are ever so subtle if they are visible at all until they blow up all of a sudden without any warning. :(

Don’t feel bad Lorcan - just as Wiebke said these things are very subtle and often hidden at first
Your devotion to Bann ( and your piggies) is immense ❤️
I hope all goes well at the vets

It's not looking great for the moment. They're off to try and flush his mouth because it might be his back teeth, because the issue looks like it's behind his eye, not the eye itself.

He's been eating and drinking fine but his weight has dropped dramatically out of nowhere. My poor boy :(

Okay so. Ten days of Baytril and Metacam and then back again. The upper cheek teeth are a little wobbly, but they don't know if it's a dental abscess up behind the eye, or if it's an abscess behind the eye causing pressure around the teeth.

I did tell them it had been bleeding but it was watery blood. There's a little pus, possibly, right behind the eye but nothing that can be confirmed for definite. They want him back in 10 days, see if it's helped and they can maybe work out the source of infection. I'd rather avoid surgery for him if I can.

Apparently he pooped on a couple of the nurses to protest having his mouth syringed and scoped. Definitely not all bad then, heh.

Ah dear Bann
Hopefully those meds will do the trick
Knowing Bann with his haypokes in his eyes maybe it was a haypoke in his mouth
I’m sure he’ll be back to normal asap ❤️

I've left him tucking into a couple of green beans. He's bright enough, all things considered, but he's making a point to avoid showing me his left side. The right is fine, he knows I'm worried about the left.

Poor boy. It was a different vet I saw today, but Martin was in @Claire W and she took him to see him, saying Martin knows more about guinea pigs than she does and she wanted his advice. Martin also knows I'd rather not have him sedated or anaesthetised unless absolutely necessary, hence antibiotics first and a wait and see.

You’ll be in good hands with Martin. Was it Helen you saw? Shoulder length brown hair? If so, she’s allergic to guinea pigs so rarely sees them and prefers to consult with Vince or Martin if she isn’t sure of something x

No, it wasn't Helen, I've not seen this woman about before. Younger woman, possible east Asian background but her accent is local. She was great with Bann though, and loved that he walked himself into the carrier once everything was done.

It’s always refreshing to hear of vets who are good with our pets and who aren’t afraid to ask advise from another vet if they aren’t sure of something.

May be I’ll come across her when Austin and Morris have their annual vaccinations in May 🤞 they do not have to go before then x

I'm just nervous, I know it's an abscess but also, it's an abscess. The way it's swelling tells my not-a-medic self it's less likely to be tooth related, right? Because the draining is through the top eyelid, not the lower one. And yet his upper molars are wobbly, I don't know how loose because she'd taken him to see Martin when they scoped him.

I am worse at this than Bann is, lol. At least he's patient enough to be medicated.

It’s understandable to be worried Lorcan - we place our trust in the hands of the Vet and nurses
I’m sure Bann will improve once those meds kick in
Meanwhile that little Goblin will keep you on your toes 🥰
