Back fusion surgery 😲

Saw the physio this week. She is happy with my progress so far. I’ve got some slightly harder exercises to do and she thinks my foot pain is arthritis.

She explained to me why I’m getting pain in my groin and buttocks and why I generally feel weak. It’s been because I’ve had a bad back for so many years all my muscles have weakened. So I need to reteach them and strengthen them. Alls good.
You have my sympathies. Like you I've suffered serious back pain for decades and I've been working with a physio for a few months to strengthen my muscles etc. It's going to take a long time, I've mentally put aside at least 12 months of exercises and then maintenance.

Glad all is heading in the right direction. It makes sense that your body has adapted over many years and now needs to relearn how to work properly again. Just be patient and have faith in the process.

Hi there, I had a discectomy last year when I was 42. I couldn't walk without crutches as I couldn't weight bear on my left leg due to nerve compression. So for me surgery was the only hope. I am now 8 months post surgery and doing well. It has been an incredibly slow healing process and the rehab success is based on how dedicated you are to the exercises. I joined the Back in Shape program which also has loads of free content on YouTube. I don't think I'd be doing so well without it. So I can now walk for 10-15 minutes and am so much stronger. I get a stiff achey back first thing but generally am pain free. I was on 300/500 cocodamol x4 a day, gabapentin and occasionally Naproxen. Was drugged up to the eyeballs! I'm working towards losing weight and wanting to start running again. And a big bonus is I can do more for the guinea pigs! 🐾
I would set aside 3 months post-op to recover, but would go for it. I know spinal fusion is worse than a discectomy, but the relief has outweighed the trauma of the surgery. Good luck x
I’m so pleased you are doing well. Back issues are the worst. Good luck with your weight loss and running plans. 😄

Yes my physio said it could take up to 18 months. Good luck. You’ll get there. Stay positive ❤️
