Advice On Dental Issues?

How long is she going between dentals? Has she stopped eating again?
She's not stopped eating this time luckily. Last time was a month ago. I'm literally just off the phone with the vet who said when he got a look in her mouth there was actually very little wrong and her teeth looked good. Some very small spurs but nothing much at all. Which is good news.. but then there's now the question of why is she eating to the side/mouth open if there was very little wrong? Could something else be casing her to eat like this?

No it's unlikely to show on an x-ray. Our vet is very good at detecting even the slightest swelling and he would generally put the piggy on Zithromax immediately. In most cases there is an improvement within a few days. Once the abscess is resolved, then the dental issues tend to be too!

Thanks for your help. I just spoke to the nurse there who said if there was an absess the vet would have seen/felt it. That just brings up more questions though, why is she eating like this if there are only very minor dental issues

It's one of those things that's quite tricky to bring up without making it sound like you think your vet is incompetent...
My vets are both very good (highly recommended on here) so I do feel confident that it would be spotted, but I'll ask about it when I pick Toast up tonight.

I'm assuming they'd also be able to feel the absess if they felt along the jawline?

Most are very subtle and are missed unfortunately. .

That's Toast home now. She's bloaty from the anesthetic so she's got Emeprid for a few days. My vet said her teeth and mouth were actually very healthy looking, a couple teeth only half a millimetre over grown.

I absolutely hate seeing her like this after GA, she's completely out of it, just staring into space. Her fur looks a bit dandruff-y... which it wasn't before so I'm assuming it's stress related? Her fur is also coming out but she's such a nervous pig so that'll be stress too.

Toast still hasn't moved very much and doesn't want to leave her carrier right now (I'm picking her up every hour and changing her bedding so she's not all wet) but she has ate some pellets and a bit of pepper.

I was getting a bit worried as she hasn't wanted to eat any hay in a few hours but Beans is doing a good job looking after her sister. She keeps using her nose to nudge some hay to Toast's mouth and slowly Toast is eating more and more hay. They're not the most cuddly pigs but Beans always looks out for her sister, she hasn't left her side :luv:

Toast didn't have a good night last night and she's no better today.

I had to take her to the vets first thing this morning as her eyes were watering. She's scratched them and has eye drops now.

She's also still not wanting to move and hasn't shown a great interestin food. She's lost 40g since last night. I'm giving her pellets which she's taking but as her stool is very soft and she's bloaty I'm not giving her a lot of veg, just some pepper for vit c but she doesn't even want that really.

I've had to bath her 3 times because she still won't move and is getting covered in pee and feaces (despite me moving her every hour and changing bedding).

I don't know what to do now. She wasn't this out of it last time

Oh no - poor Toast sounds like she had a hard time this time around, but you are obviously doing all that you can.
Hope that things start to pick up for Toast very soon.

She was picking at some veg this morning and taking a few pellets from my hand but now she's not taking anything. I've tried warm mashed pellets which she usually loves and she's not really eating it, just picking little bits. She seems the exact same now as she was when she came round from the anesthetic, dazed and very lathargic. She's also been pulling her fur out from under her chin

I've phoned them I'm waiting on them getting back to me. I've got Beans at the vet in an hour I think I'll take Toast too. I'm getting g really worried. It was a different vet who done the procedure this time and he's used buprenorphine. I had asked him to use Valium as she's had that before and was absolutely fine with it, whearas she had something else the first dental and had a terrible reaction to it. It seems like a bad reaction again...

can anything be done to help her out of this? I'm really getting worried now

Make sure shes warm enough and not too hot. Crunchies first dental they used buprenorphine.. She had a bad reaction too although she ended up going limp and gagging when i got her home! Her second dental they used ketamine I'm sure and she was righr as rain afterwards. She is 5.5 years old so i think that contributed to it. I basically had to just nurse her until it went out her system although it didnt really take this long.. It was in the early hours of the following morning she started to come out of it.

I agree about getting them both seen to x

I put veg down for beans and toast came to get some. She tried to pick at some pepper but it was as she couldn't chew?

She's eating little bits of hay now.

I feel sick with worry. I'm meant to be working night shift tonight at 7pm. My mum is here to syringe her but I don't feel good a bit leaving her :(

Just back from the vets, was there for 2 hours. They gave her pain relief by injection. The vet think the reason she's not eating is that she's in pain and because she's such a nervous animal, the stress is making it 10 times worse.

She's been at the vets 6 times in one week, everything's just hit her at once and the stress of it is making it worse. Her hair is falling out in clumps.

I've phoned in to work so I can stay with her all night, I couldn't bring myself to leave her until 5am when I finish.

I'm trying to syringe her mashed pellets but she's not really showing any interest. I'm trying her favourite veg too but again she's not interested, she'll have a tiny nibble then turn her head away. I'm really panicking now I'm not sure what else I can do to help her.

Did the vet say to bring her back tomorrow for more pain relief?

He said if she still hasn't picked up or ate then to bring her back in the morning. Her weight is down 50g and I'm struggling to get her to eat anything. She still looks out of it, like she doesn't know were she is...

Not trying to put frightners on you but has she had heart issues ruled out recently, or had any issues that could point to that? My vet xrayed crunchies chest once she'd recovered from her bad anaesthetic reaction and gave her chest a good listen too incase she had an issue underlying.

I'm praying she perks up! I can sense your worry and know the feeling far too well xx

She's eating hay this morning and walking about. She's still not really wanting to eat her favourite veg so still not quite herself.
She's quite skittish too but she's moving about now compared to being lifeless last night so definitely an improvement x
