Hi all.

Sorry I only seem to show up around here in a crisis!

Back again with indeed a crisis, we have been having issues with bandit for a while since he somehow broke both bottom teeth out (entirely unsure how or why we looked into it quite thoroughly and came up with nothing.) and they never properly grew back.
This resulted in some over growth of the back teeth or there was an anomaly which had got us where we are now. We had them filed but one of the molars is basically growing out horizontally more than vertically and cut his tongue.

It grew out again post filing faster than his tongue could heal and he hasn't been on solid food for about two months as he refuses to eat. on another inspection the vet believes there is nothing more we can do for him now as filing the teeth achieves nothing as thry just grow straight back out again and the molar can't be removed. He said to bring him back in when we believe it's time to say good bye.

So, I just wanted to check before we make that final decision if there's any other options or if due to the weird nature of his molar we are doomed.

He's about 5 or 6 (a rescue so not 100% sure, we've had him about 3 or 4 years and was about 2ish when we got him) he's now half the weight he use to be, he's refusing solids and fighting me a bit when it comes to critical care syring feeds. He's on metacam but it's upset his tum a bit, so we had to reduce the dose and I'm not sure it's improved anything yet. He's looking pretty sad and doesn't really move a lot any more so if there really is nothing more we can do then I'll have to make that decision soon so he isn't suffering miserably.

I do absolutely trust my vet but just on the off chance there's an option he may not know about I thought I'd ask.

All pretty sad over here we tried do hard to get him right again.

I too was going to suggest Simon Maddock in Northampton. I do hope you can come up with a solution. I had a piggy who’s teeth grew inwards and over his tongue and we had to say goodbye :( He was just 2 years old :(

Hi!

Would you consider travelling to Northampton to the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic for a second opinion? Simon Maddock does about 15 guinea pig dentals every week on average and sees guinea pigs from all over the UK from as far as Devon/Cornwall and Edinburgh; he has all the experience you could wish for and he is not terribly far away from you.
He has saved lots of dental piggy lives that have been given up by other vets. He is a general vet who only treats cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and the odd other rodent pet, so the prices are not as extravagant as with an exotics vet. ;)

Thank you for the suggestions.
I'll get in contact with them.
I too go to Simon Maddock in Northampton with both my piggies. One with a broken incisor which has grown fat and does not quite align with the opposing incisor so grows very long. The other piggie has a strange pre molar that has a peg tooth next to it which grows strangely because it doesn’t quite wear properly, my local vet wanted to PTS my Ted, he has been fine with a conscious dental every 2 months for over a year now and eats like a trooper. Definitely worth the trip (600 mile round trip for us and overnight stay)
Hope you can get Bandit sorted, Simon is very reasonable price wise too

Just to update you all.
I have Bandit booked in with Simon as soon as I could for a Monday morning, I'm in the area anyway on Sunday so I'm staying over with a friend, all worked out really well on that front!
Fingers crossed there's options available but even if there's nothing to be done, I'll know I've given him every chance.

Bonus pic of when he was a young lad still, sweet boy.

All the best!

Bandit will be in safe hands there with Simon and you will find out exactly what’s wrong with his feet and what can be done x
Good luck for Monday, let us all know how you get on

Heya, saw him today, doesn't seem too hopeful but we are giving it a go.
Simon saw a lot more wrong than my vet but in that, it's a bit concerning as he didn't seem to have a single normal tooth in his mouth and had to do a lot of work.
So he had a big file back and we are going to see how he goes.

Poor boy has a swollen lip after the dental work, anyone else had experience with this?
Simon has said wait 24 hours it should go.

He's not back on solids yet, wasn't expecting him to, but showing more interest.

Aw, his mouth is bound to be a bit sore if he has had all that work done poor boy. Hopefully it will settle down soon. Keep in touch and let us all know how he progresses, thinking of you all, come on Bandit get eating x

If his teeth were really bad, it’ll take a while for him to start eating. Are you cutting veg into thin strips? Grass is the best thing for them to eat. When do you next see Simon? x
Yep veg has been cut into strips since his lower incisors broke so we are continuing that for him. Prioritising grass for him too, one thing he did show an improvement on eating was banana, he managed to eat larger chunks of it with out it being mushed up. I know it's not an ideal food but he takes great pleasure in it and means he doesn't fight me when it's mashed into the critical care.
Not yet booked in with Simon again yet, he's said to wait and see as if there isn't any sign of recovery after this or if Bandit doesn't improve and eat by himself for longer than a fortnight it might be kinder just to PTS. So fingers and toes crossed that this is going to work long term for the old boy.

Poor old chap. Bit frustrated my vet missed how bad his mouth was.

I'd advise you get an appointment booked. You can always cancel, if you don't need it, but Simon books up so quickly, you might find you can't get in when you need to. We currently have two piggies with severe dental disease, here at TEAS, but both are showing significant signs of improvement and in fact, Tilly is eating completely for herself now.

Simon is amazing, you will find out what’s his dental problem x
Well, he's already found out what the problem is, it's basically all wrong in his mouth, no tooth was ok and Simon's already said if this go at treating it doesn't solve it the problem then it could be kinder to put him to sleep so we are just waiting to see at this point.
Initial signs aren't brilliant. He's still drooling like crazy, he's still not really eaten anything on his own and still throws his head when he tries. His tum is being upset by his meds too, feeling like I'm fighting a bit if s losing battle despite the tiny positives yesterday.

It sounds like his teeth are similar to our Tilly and Truffle. One treatment won't solve the problem, but it sounds like Simon is hoping there will be some improvement from the first round of treatment. We are making significant progress now, especially with Tilly and Truffle is also making progress, but he's been having treatment for a lot less time. However, we are only getting there by having very regular treatment, which is fine for us, as we are local to Simon, but I guess you can't be travelling there fortnightly.

Aww bless him I'm so sorry you and bandit have had such a hard time I do hope you see some sort of improvement keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers xx

Aw, sorry just read back, yes poor Bandit, do hope he starts improving, I know just how soul destroying it is for you, such a worrying time, fingers all crossed he starts improving. I drive up from Cornwall every 2 months which is not too bad, it is difficult if you are having to go fortnightly like Debbie said. It does take a little time to get their teeth balanced again. Will he eat oats, they are good for fattening up, dry or soaked. Good luck x

Just wanted to share that today seemed to show more improvement, it was like something just switched on in him. He's super keen for food again, I'm with out argument getting 30mls per feeding session into him rather than fighting just to get in a full 15mls, he's super eager and energetic (he was literally climbing the walls of his box and then me when we had to wait for food to be ready) and we saw him eat pepper and cucumber today!
Still not keen on grass but our grass isn't a favourite with our piggies. Doesn't seem keen on leafy or green veg but I'll take what I can get.

He's still drooling, but it seems a tad less maybe. Less mouthing the air and throwing his head when offered food. I guess what ever in his mouth was causing discomfort may have eased?
It's promising! I'm still being cautious about getting hopeful but it was such a boost in our moral (I was scraping the bottom of the barrel I can tell you) to see him have some energy and a bit of a reward for all our hard work.
Fingers crossed he keeps improving and we can get him to Simon on a regular basis to control the issues.
Thank you everyone for your support during this it makes all the difference.
