Hi, newbie here so sorry if this is in the wrong place! I have recently got 2 piggies and I'm a little concerned that they don't seem tonne interested in their hay. I purchased a Timothy hay bale from pets at home (pain in the neck as it's all compressed so goes everywhere) it seems fine as bedding but doesn't seem very green and edible looking. Where do you buy your hay from? Even if i end up buying this one for bedding and another for them to eat that's fine just getting abit concerned. Thanks!

I use Natures Own Pets meadow hay for bedding and eating.

I think hay will always get everywhere, I certainly haven't found a way of keeping it contained!

:wel: to the forum !

I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree about the pets at home timothy hay :td: .

If you want to stick to shop bought hay , people have given good reports from hay they've bought from the range . A good eating hay available on Pets at Home is the Alfalfa King Timothy ( it think it's about £8 a packet so, it's a " treat " hay ).

Naturally, the cheapest way to get hay is from a local farm by the bale - if you have enough room to store it .

Here are some links to online suppliers ( with my overview in brackets ) ...

Dust Free Hay ( can be a bit pricey - but hay is usually good quality, definitely dust free and, if bought in boxes, easy to store )

Hay and Straw ( I get the INGs hay from here and LOVE it ! - However, some members report not being happy with their hay . I have only ever had one duff batch and it was replaced as soon as I let the company know ) .

Natural Hays Rabbit Supplies | The Hay Experts ( lots of choice on this site - this is excellant " treat " hay Orchard Grass | Hays & Grasses | The Hay Experts )

Timothy Hay | Hay Supplies UK Lovely eating hay ( I've not tried the 2017 batch (yet) . Some years harvests have produced a stalky hay - but it's great as an eating hay with the added advantage this is a UK hay ( a lot of Timothy hay comes from the US ) )

Hello and welcome to the forum. I get this years fresh cut hay from the local equestrian feed store.

I use 3 different hays and they are all great. Just ordered a huge 10kg bag of 2017 timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk for £22 with free delivery and I like that its a local Stirling company. ..lovely green hay with long stalks and lots of flower/ seed heads (sorry dont know what you call them) also used B andM hay at £1.99 great for stuffing in toilet rolls goes down a treat! and the P @H Alfafa King Timothy hay think it was £9 for quite a small bag but its very compressed and worth the money I would buy it again

Hello

Welcome to the forum :)

Lots of great advice above :)

We get our meadow hay from a local pet supply store, failing that dustfreehay.co.uk but it can be a little hit and miss.

Timothy hay we buy for £12 a bag from amazon and buy the oxbow stuff. It lasts a bag a month normally as we feed it alongside the meadow hay, it is normally a excellent quality however last months bag was not as green - the pigs still love it though.

Hope you enjoy your time on the forum, how many pigs do you hav?

Lee

I buy meadow hay locally in bales, but I buy Timothy hay from PAH and haven't had a problem with it. I buy the Alfa King brand though, not PAH own brand.

I also use Pets at Home Timothy hay but like you say the quality is pretty poor so I use it as bedding, They do munch it too, though.

For eating hay I still use Timothy hay, but better quality ones.

(2017 Crop) Quailty UK Grown Timothy Hay | Timothy Hay | Hay Supplies UK

This hay is honestly the best quality hay I've ever came across (And I've tried loads). It's also cheap considering the size of it and the quality. It's always so fresh and green, and smells amazing.

Then I also get this hay
Excel Feeding Hay | Hays & Grasses | The Hay Experts

It's amazing quality too, although considering the size it is slightly expensive. (Some Pets at Home stores sell it too to save on the delivery charges)

I also mix in some dried herbs into their hay every so often just to keep it interesting

oh gosh, i feel terrible!

I'm currently using the pah timothy hay and was led to believe i was buying them 'luxury' hay! :td:

i'm only 2 weeks in to being a piggy owner so lots to learn.

Does anyone know if you need to look out or ask for something specific if getting a bale from a farmer? We're surrounded by farms here so it's a good option for me

I like hay that is green and not dead looking. Long, not chopped small. Personally I wouldn't buy straight from a farmer, I want it to be cared for so that it is ready for small animals.

Yesterday I bought into a shop the same hay suggested by @JenniferG and I found it really soft; my piggies appreciated it just like the fresh grass they always eat. But online I buy a cheper hay, to be honest... I pay 2€ a kg, they eat it as well but this hay looks better.
I have heard of many piggies who refuse to eat Timothy... it is the best for them but if they don't want it we need to buy a different kind...

I try to mix it up as my oldies are getting fussier about what they'll eat. I tend to keep a float level of farm hay and add in a mixture of the b&m dandelion and Timothy hay, oxbow Timothy and other hay that looks green. With 14 and a hay hoovering bunny I'd be out of house and home if I didn't buy the farm bales XD

The Timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk is great- around £20 for a 10kg bale and lasts a long time. Very green and my pigs love it. My boys hated the pets at home hay too!

My boys hated the pets at home hay so we tried the wilkos hay but you didn't get much in a portion for how much it was and we found it wasn't very stretchy at all so now we get mixed hay from my horse farm which lasts a long time and has different types of hay in, I would recommend it :tu:

My lot are not impressed by Timothy he either
I get mine the Burgess XL longstem feeding hey from Pets At Home if you click on my thread with that title there is a photograph of my lot munching it so you can get an idea of what it looks like
The good thing about this happy is that there is no wastage whatsoever so it cuts down on the cage waste that is generated
Correction hey
Stupid Apple dictation

I get this PET-600894 Pettex Meadow Hay (1kg) 6 Pack as it's not compressed so it makes for snuggly bedding as well as tasty food. It tends to be good quality hay too, often fine and fresh and green, though of course it's variable. I get it click and collect so I don't have to be in when it's delivered. I sometimes get them timothy/camomile/orchard hay too as a treat, but they just get a bit of that to eat rather than enough to make a bed out of.

I love the Meadow Hay. Just had one bag that smelt a bit 'old' but I think it was from the order before the previous order!
