I was wondering, do guinea pigs need regular veterinary visits/checkups? If so how often? And do they need to go to a guinea pig/small animal/exotic pet specific vet? Or is a normal vet that takes guinea pigs fine for checkups?

When I got my piggies I took them for a health check, now I just take them if there is something wrong with them. Some, I know, take them for nails clips etc and others take them for a health check once a year or sometimes more often. They do need to see a vet who is experienced seeing in guinea pigs yes.

Ours went for a health check when we first got them, and I plan to take them every 6 months for a check up and proper nail trim.
We use our local small animal vets who seem to know about piggys.
You can think of your first health check as an opportunity to test your vets piggy knowledge- do they know what to check? Ours checked back as well as front teeth and listened for healthy tummy sounds and commented on what well shaped poops they were doing, which suggests they know what's important! They should check weight, ears, eyes, fur, breathing, heart, and the whole bum-and-bits area too.

Mine were health checked when I got them. I will have them checked now once a year.
