Swollen testicles after neauter

Poor boy and poor you. I know all about sleepless nights! What’s his weight this morning? Has he lost any?

Metacam tastes sweet so they quite often are very willing to take it.

you can mix a little grated apple in a syringe feed as it can make it more appealing. You could also try a recovery feed (critical care or supreme science). A lot of piggies like their own pellets mashed as the taste is familiar with yours may be happier with a proper recovery feed. If he is eating hay though then that is a good sign. He just needs to be eating enough to keep his weight up.

make sure you weigh him at the same time each day so that it is in the same place in the feeding cycle (it just helps minimise fluctuations as much as you can).

Let us know what the vet says

So cookie has being to the vets.
He has the biggest abscess she’s ever seen on a pig. She called it a trophy abscess. She said there’s no wonder he’s not eating.
So they drained him and gave the abscess a good clean out.
He’s now on baytril and metacam twice day if he needs it.
He weights 1090g this morning but he weighed 1096g yesterday. Although his abscess was huge so that’s maybe why.
He’s perked up abit since coming home but still not interested in his piggy neighbour.
Any advice on any care I could be giving the abscess?
She said he MAY need surgery if antibiotics do t work😥

Poor boy.
if it is such a bad abscess baytril may not be enough to deal with it. Does the vet want to do a recheck?
6g in itself not concerning but keep up with the daily weighing/syringe feeding. What you don’t want is a large drop or a continual downward trend.
try to get hold of some probiotic, or better still, make poop soup, as antibiotics can be tough on the body and suppress appetite. A probiotic (or poop soup) can help with the replacement of the good bacteria the antibiotics will kill off.
(it doesn’t always happen, I have a rabbit on baytril right now and it hasnt affected her appetite).
keep us posted

Hiya yes he’s to return in 5 - 7 days unless i
think he’s deteriorating.
Oh the vet mentioned honey to encourage him to eat his pellets?🤔

Definitely no honey. I would try to get some recovery food and try that instead of the pellets for syringe feeding.

You need to grate it quite finely to get it through the syringe with the mushed pellets.
As mentioned, it’s only what is going on with his weight which is the guide to how much you need to syringe feed him. Critical care comes in fine grind so It can sometimes be easier to get them to take it.
(and definitely no honey!)

I’m so happy😊
He’s actually eating pellets and drinking!
He stinks though where the abscess was🙈

Sometimes antibiotics alone just isn’t enough, surgery is needed and sometimes they need to be left open and flushed daily so they can heal from the inside out.

it’s great that he is eating and drinking! Is he eating hay though?

Yes he is eating hay as we speak.
He’s being nibbling hay since lunch time.
He’s still ignoring his neighbour inky though the cage xx

I’m wondering if I should try flush it with some saline tomorrow🤔 it is still leaking pus xx

Excellent. Continue to monitor his weight daily, particularly now he is on antibiotics in case they upset his tummy.
it depends on the severity of the abscess as to whether the baytril stands a chance of working. It’s not the strongest antibiotic a piggy can be given but it is always the one that is given first

Speak to the vet before you do anything. Is the wound open or did the vet literally just drain it with a needle?
The problem is that just draining them sometimes isn’t enough, and as your vet has already advised, surgery could be needed.

When Christian had an abscess, it was so huge surgery was needed to remove it. This was the size.:yikes::yikes:

and this was inside! :yikes::yikes:

He has a little slit that was cut with a scalpel then drained and washed out xx

Aww I'm glad to hear your boy is eating again! Mine didn't eat at first either and he is also on 0.2 metacam twice a day. I found that when he would reject certain foods he would always say eat grass. I believe grass is natures cure 🤣💚 I wish him a speedy recovery! ❤️

My Elvis had an abscess that we think was caused by a reaction to the stitches used when he was neutered. His was drained too and left open. We didn't flush it but we did clean it with salt water twice daily to keep it open as long as possible. For him antibiotics didn't do the trick and he ended up having the capsule surgically removed. He recovered well and has been fine ever since. He kept eating and acting as normal throughout so I think I was very lucky there.

I think Cookie will need surgery because I think it’s swelling again already but he’s eating ect today but is still spending a lot of time in his bed. Cookies incision seems to have already closed up x

I think cookies is more swollen than this😬
Yes Elvis's did close up again very quickly too and it was much more obvious than Christian's. Elvis had to have his drained a second time because it filled up again but it stayed down then. It may have just stayed down if we'd left it and stopped the antibiotics but we decided to have the capsule removed while it was down rather than wait to see if it filled up again. If he's still eating that's good.
