So we discovered the sad news that one my daughters guinea pigs has a bladder stone. It’s to large for him to pass. He’s pooping fine, but not peeing. He eats a little bit each day and lost a lot of weight. I’ve heard him squeal in pain only a couple times. The vet said there is the possibility of it moving but they recommend that we see a specialist. Bad news, specalist are all booked up for a while. They recommended a 1000 dollar surgery but we don’t know if he will survive it. He’s around 4 or 5. I also read the stone can come back. Thoughts?

Also we have been syringe feeding him water so he won’t get dehydrated. He seems to like his meds. We are keeping the boys sepererate to see how much he’s peeing.

Are you syringe feeding him food also? This is very important while he’s off his food.Is he on pain relief? Bladder stones are very painful. There is the possibility they can come back after surgery.

Vet said nothing about syringe feeding but he isomer critical care. He’s on antibiotics and pain meds. All odds seem against us since ever place is booked till next week and we are worried if he will make it till then. Maybe it’s just him time to go.

They should see you . It is an emergency, any vet that knows about guinea pig will know this. If he isnt peeing he wont have long if the stone is blocking him from peeing. Just be firm on the phone or find a 24 hour vets. But whatever you do dont feel guilty, you are an amazing owner joining here to get advice and you seem like your doing all you can.

Your are syringe feeding critical care tho yea?

And if he does get surgery and all ends up ok, lower the calcium from his diet it sometimes helps. Kale , spinach are high in calcium and buy a water filter

ok sorry for the obnoxious title
My pig Farley has a bladder stone and we are trying to see if we can take him into emergency surgery today or tomorrow since the last time he peed was yesterday at the vets. I wanna keep him weight up and some recommended syringe feeding with pellets and water. I have oxbo pellets. How many pellets and how much water. It probably has to be warm water right? Thank you.

Thank you so much. He is getting critical care :) how much should I feed him though. He had some this morning

Your best bet is to crush some pellets up into a powder and then mix with water. I have always done mine this way with cold water. The syringes tend to get clogged every few days so make sure you have a few on hand.
This is the forum syringe feeding guide: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Good luck xx

put the pellets in a little container, i soak level with warm water and leave it to soak for 10 minutes then put it in the back of the syringe with my fingers.

I then gently ease the syringe into my guinea pigs mouth so that i can feel her biting the syringe, then at first gently do quarter of a syringe at a time, let them finish chewing then go again. I found burgess nuggets to soak best. Which my tesco now stock. If you prefer follow the comment before mine. I havnt tried grinding the pellets before. I also pick grass, all my sick pigs seem to be interested in eating this over anything else. Too much grass can cause bloat though

We are going to take him to the emergency vet first thing in the morning. My poor little guy :(

I feed 15ml every 2 or 3 hours, its knackering but you cant leave him too long during the night. My old male gpig pip had 3 stones. Sadly they were unopperable. He passed away. But alot of members on here have had happy endings with stone pigs

Hi!

Ideally you use warm water to soak the pellets. The consistency should be so dry/wet that it just passes through when you cut off the tip and if necessary plunger as described in our illustrated step-by-step syringe feed guide, which will hopefully answer all your questions.

All the best!

Taking Farley to the emergency vet tomorrow. Worried if he is even going to make it through the night since he acted as if he was very tired when we have him his meds. Guess all we have to do is hope.

Farley has a stone and is going to the vet tomorrow morning for a emergency check up and see if he can have immediate surgery. He has not peed at all today but peed a bit yesterday. Now I’m concerned if he will make it through the night. How long can they go without peeing?

A guinea pig not peeing is a medical emergency as it means the stone is stuck.

Please take your boy to the vets ASAP as an emergency. If you phone your usual vet, they will have the number of the out of hours vet on their answer phone

We had the option to take him last night but the exotic vet didn’t get there until the morning so all they would be able to do is a keep an eye on him. We are about to rush to the vet now

Hi @Sappyshelly I have merged your four threads into one topic so that all the helpful advice is in one place. Our posting rules state:

d) When creating a thread, please provide a meaningful and relevant title. This will get you a lot more replies. Please also ensure you haven’t posted a thread on exactly the same subject within a reasonable period of time

The reason for keeping it all in one thread is that those replying may have missed earlier threads that might contain relevant information that changes the advice. Also, for yourself, it will prevent being given the same advice multiple times in different threads especially when you then start another thread so it can be easy for members to miss that you have taken advice.

Just a further edit to the title for you so that members are aware of the topic you are seeking help on. Hope this is ok

UPDATE: Farley is going into surgery. If all goes well we can hopefully pick him up by tomorrow. I’m just worried about the anestesia because it always comes with a risk. He’s a strong little dude so I believe in him. He’s around 4 or 5 which is quite old, but I have confidence in him.
