Squeaking when going to bathroom

Thank you all for your help and support. Was here a few years ago with Martin's bestie Kurt and it does not get easier. Probably part of the grief but I'm just so angry we weren't given an update and everyone we spoke to said he would be fine and they would have told us if there was a problem, so I was ready to pick him up, not this news.
Got to concentrate on Len now and make sure he's OK.
So, so sad. Martin was such a sweet and silly thing and was wheaking and zooming on the morning we took him. It's so cruel

I know. I felt so sad too. I didn’t understand why he just couldn’t make it. Percy was fine in himself too before. Just squeaking a bit and a tiny bit of blood. It’s just how it is. I’m angry they didn’t keep you updated though.

I'm so sorry about the rubbish service you received.
I also lost two piggies due to bladder stones, but the vets were amazing and they updated me night and day.
Martin wouldn't have suffered or even known what was happening- you gave him the best possible chance, which is sometimes all we can do. 🌈
In terms of looking after Len, you may find this guide useful: Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig. I find that some piggies cope much better than others, especially if they could already sense that their companion was poorly.

Thank you. I've used these guides in the past and they are brilliant. Len is going to be a tricky one to pair if we do. He's quite aggressive when he wants to be. They didn't share a cage as we rescued Len to help Martin when he was bereaved and Len nearly killed him so we kept them next to eachother in separate cages. He's OK at the moment but we will bring Martin's body back to show him. I think poor Len had a tough time as a young pig. He was an outdoors pig and his cage mate was taken by a fox, so understandable that he has some fear responses

I'm so so sorry for your loss of Martin. How you've been treated by the vet must have made it even harder. Sending you love x

Finally got the bill back from Martin's unsuccessful surgery and with it a detailed breakdown of the meds used. Obviously I'm no vet but some of this seems very excessive, especially the lidocaine which on reading should be 1% not 2%. Might still be angry with the way he (and us) were treated. Really want to swerve if we ever have any other piggies needing surgery.

Percy’s op was about that too. Piggy surgery is so expensive.

They gave us 20% off after admitting nobody bothered to contact us! I'm just more worried they gave him too much meds. Especially seeing as he was fine after the surgery and then suddenly died. Grrr. Still angry all this time later!

Maybe you could speak to the practise manager. They should be able to explain there short comings.
You would not want it happening again.☹️

The practice manager was so rude to us. He initially accused us of lying about not getting any information. I've honestly never been spoken to like that by anyone, let alone in a medical professional. I highly doubt he would admit any wrongdoing as he wouldn't even admit (until forced) that they never even attempted to call us 👺

My girl had bladder stone surgery and was roughly the same amount. Second op was more than that actually. We sent the stone off so that was on top. And already had meds at home.
I have only just caught up with this thread and I’m utterly disgusted with the way you and your family were treated. I hope that when you feel strong enough you can take this further. There is no excuse for someone not being updated about the treatment and care on their beloved pet. Let alone just letting them know the animal has made it through surgery. I am a vet nurse myself and couldn’t ever imagine someone being treated this way. Maybe it’s just because of my experience doing the job I do, but we always make sure we call when the patients out of surgery and update them on their progress on recovery. I’m so sorry. But you did everything you could for your wonderful piggie. My poppy survived her first cystotomy her second one 9 months later was an emmotional ride, took five days for her to Improve only for her to suffer a stroke and pass three days later. Sometimes Guinea pigs are just too fragile.
Sending big hugs. X

Thank you for your reply, that's really comforting. I'm really pleased to read that it wasnt malpractice or anything. I think we had accepted it was a risk (and a risk we had to take) but you're right, it's the way we were treated. When our other boy, Kurt didn't make it through surgery we were comforted by how wonderful and dignified our normal vets were. Because they messed up on the Comms and the way they spoke to us (and waited several months to send the bill) we were starting to think they'd messed up elsewhere. It's all so sad and we still miss him every day but at least we gave him the best shot at life.
