:( Hello my lovelies!

Sorry to come here and pester you all on this not so sunny day. I know i havent posted much life has been pretty hectic so let me explain....

in the past siz weeks Percy-Roo has had a UTI twice - bladder infection and been 'off colour'. Lost a lot of weight during this time went to 600g and managed to get him back upto 950 about two weeks ago.

However since last week he's went down hill very quick, i noticed he was off colour again and losing weight. I didn't want to get the CC out straightaway so gave him a variety in his hay.

On Friday i weighed him and he was 750, whilst handling him i noticed he was slightly wheezy, when he breathed decided to keep an eye on him and get him checked if there was no improvement.

On Sunday he went so downhill during the evening, his breathing became erratic and he hardly touched his food so out came the critical care and i phoned the vets.

The vet got me an emergancy appointment to which i turned up with my PJ's underneath, he was really not at all well!

Lathargic, floppy, breathing heavy making a staggered 'huhhh' noise when he was breathing. His heart rate has increased quite dramatically.

The vet diagonised him with having an astma attack and gave him two injections to reduce the swelling in his airways.

I've been told to wait until tomorrow as it can take upto 48hours for the medication to work, and if there is no improvement hes going in for x-rays as the vet noted that she could hear fluid on his lungs. However if he goes further downhill tonight to take him to the emergancy vets asap.

Hes still not eating and struggling with the CC as he makes this awful gasping noise whenever he tries to swallow. His poop has gone stringy (?) and long and slightly wetish. He's not floppy anymore but still not his usually happy self and lathargic, just huddled in his hidey making really awful huhh huhh noises. I'm not too sure what else i can do for him. Hes skin and bones and not well.

Thank you I'm abit shaken with it I'm really annoyed with myself for not taking him on friday as soon as i noticed he was wheezy. :(

The vet just told me to prepare myself as hes been very ill lately, but we're going to do all we can :)

Thank you again for the heeling vibes, will tell Percy that you send him huggles.

Oh my goodness :( poor P-Roo, would you say your vet is cavvy savvy? Has she ruled out an chest infection or given him antibiotics? Surely if she could hear fluid on his lungs it suggests more than just an asthma attack?

Sending him all my healing vibes, hopefully someone else will come along with advice soon x

She's really good vet and cavy savy- She doesnt think its a chest infection as theres no discharge from his nose and hes not showing any of the classic symptoms - but she does want to do an xray tomorrow on him for the fluid that she thinks she can hear- she said his chest is very raspy/ rattley.

Hes wheezy and cant wheek it comes out really hoarse, his gums are very pale too. :(

Thank you for the vibes will keep you all posted on his progress. x

I am so sorry to hear how unwell Percy-Roo is. How worrying for you. I wish you both all the best.

Sorry to hear this, hope your vet can get to the bottom of it. Sending lots of healing vibes his way and hugs to you. Was the injection a diuretic? This was mentioned on Laura's site theguineapighelpline http://www.guineapighelpline.com/WarningRespiratoryDifficulties.pdf

Hope your little man gets better soon x

It was! :) Injected in the skin just above the shoulder,:)

He's asleep now his breathing seems to be a little less eratic and he just seems sleepy.

Thank you for the healing vibes will keep you all updated x

So sorry to hear your little man is unwell, we are crossing all fingers and paws here for a speedy recovery. Get well soon. xx

Poor baby, did the vet mention giving him a diuretic at all? this would help clear the fluid on his lungs.

EDIT: just seem post above, would think he would need more than one dose of it though.

Hugs, very very very big hugs to both of you!

Come on Percy-Roo you little rascal stop scaring your mummy and get better x

Hi Laura

Given the symptoms you describe - I suspect his biggest issue at the moment is fluid on the lungs. If this is proved to be the case with the Xray - he will need high dose diuretics to remove the worst of the fluid over the next few days.

Frusemide - 6-10mg/kg for 2-3 days (be careful he doesn;t get dehydrated) to kick-start the fluid removal process dropping down to a maintenance dose of 2mg/kg for another 7 days.

As to what is causing it:
a) respiratory infection
b) heart issues
c) kidney - infection can;t be ruled out given his recent UTI's

Note I haven;t even mentioned asthma!

If it were me I would be wanting an Xray to determine if there is any heart/kidney involvement and antibiotics as well as frusemide to help stabilise the current symptoms. Also keep an eye on his food intake/gut movements as he made also need a gut stimulant

Poor Percy Roo - hope he is feeling better soon!

x

I hope he is feeling better soon. I'm not sure if you've seen my thread on Doris but have been having issues with her lately including breathing problems. We've finally found meds that are helping and I hope you do too for Percy-Roo.
