Our Gardens

Lovely. Did you know that dried sunflower petals make lovely forage as a treat for your guinea pigs? I get dried sunflower petals from Piggie Parcels and my girlies love them.
No I didn’t know that. Brilliant. Thanks. 😘

I've just found this Jersey tiger moth on my magnolia :D

& then a Red Admiral butterfly on my fig tree

Then from a last week a ladybird 🐞 on my beans

A little cricket 🦗 on the roses

And a bee that had been floundering on the floor looking upside down, wet & worse for wear!
So I picked it up & put it put it in the buddliea to recover

I was bimbling around in the garden earlier & was trying to work out what the weird bee was,it landed on the red hot poker leaves & my camera took an age to fire up - so I only got a partial blurry picture, but it looked like a bee beetle - I've never seen one before & they're quite unusual by the sounds of things. :D

I did no-mow-May & extended it to now :))
I try to leave a big square in the lawn of long grass every year for all the insects, etc. to make the most of 🦗 🐝 🦋
I seen a dragonfly, bees, meadow brown & cabbage white butterflies too.

I found a Scarlet Tiger Moth on my grass a few weeks ago - Tiger Moths are very striking especially when they open their wings20230703_110236.webp

I also found loads of 7 spot ladybird larvae that had climbed up my broad beans and were all preparing to pupate at once. Sadly not enough to save the bean plants from the damage caused by the aphids they were eating, but maybe next year there will be more ladybirds laying more eggs to devour more aphids. 🐞🐞🐞
In other news, last weekend I picked the last of my gooseberries, over 3kg. That made a total of approx 15kg (37lbs+) from the 2 bushes 😮

Is that yellow plant St John’s wort?
That bee beetle is amazing, I never knew they existed, never seen one. Love all your butterflies. Had very few this year in my garden

Apparently the bee beetles are seen in the south, so you might be 🐝 lucky in Cornwall? :D

I Google lens'ed it... I think you're probably right it's st John's wart. I didn't realise it was that 🌸 thank you :tu:

I’m going to look out for them. I have come across a humming bee type moth a few years ago, that was amazing

I see them occasionally at home - I have a few buddleia trees that they seem to like, but my parents often have the hummingbird hawk moths on their big lavender bush, they're quite loud when they come close :D I've never managed to get a picture of them though, they flit about so quickly! >>>>>>>!

I have seen elephant &privet hawk moths & their caterpillars in my garden too. :D the forsythia, fuschia & lilac trees seem to attract them 🐛👍🏻

This one was from 2021 on my lilac tree

This one was on the ground by the lilac last year 2022

Yes we have had them on our lilac too, didn’t realise they turned into those hummingbird moths 😆

I had a lovely pink poppy in the garden not long ago. Once the flowers were gone the poppy heads looked very attractive plus I was going to keep them for the seeds. But then they mysteriously all disappeared and I am left with this.

Headless stalks! I am thinking the most likely culprit is wood mice:hmm::hmm::hmm:

Hopefully they dropped a few seeds on the ground and poppies will appear again next year.
I had poppies in my flower border, they disappeared last year, this year they have come up in the veg patch and a crack in the path. I tried to collect some seed but all the pods were empty, wonder where they will appear next year?!
