Our Gardens

Having been in the garden seeing to the piggies I went indoors for about a minute and came back out to this lovely surprise!

I do have a cleaner bowl of water in the garden, this dish has filled its self with a bit of rain water, so I guess that's what hoggies prefer.
It was only 7pm but s/he ambled off into the undergrowth as soon as finished drinking and seemed ok. Its a very dark and overcast evening here and with less than 6 hours of darkness at the moment I think they sometimes need to be out early to find all they need, I hope thats the case anyway.❤🦔

They need time to find the worms and bugs they eat so are having to come out early. The dry weather doesn’t help as worms go deeper into the soil and other creatures hide away under logs and stones.

We have had several hog poos this week in the garden but yet to see one

Yes thats what I was thinking. I was like Wow! a hedgehog! and then, Oh no! what if somethings wrong! But really I don't think there is and like you say their food is in short supply at the moment. Thank you for your reassurance.
I hope your hoggies put in an appearance soon, its always lovely to see them.

I wonder if it has babies and she’s hungry? She look very healthy. You can put out small sachets of cat food for her, your garden is in her route 😊
I hope we see one, we used to have a lot a few years back and my neighbour still has two but our hedgehog boxes have been empty for a couple of years now

I'm sorry your hedgehogs haven't been back @Bill & Ted , my daughter's haven't come back this year either. They were a highlight of my visits to her in the summer. They loved the meal worms she put out for them and would come right up to the patio doors.

How lovely your daughter had hedgehogs visiting last year!
I used to feed mealworms too but apparently they are bad for them, even as treats😥 I think the potassium is very high. Hedgehog rescues recommend to just offer cat food. I worry that will attract rats, so these days just leave water out for them. My garden is very wild tho with several log piles, so I hope it provides a decent amount of natural food for them.
I hope your hedgehogs make a return next year, they are so lovely to see x

I keep hoping to see hedgehogs in my back garden. Half of it is wild to encourage the bees and other insects. So far the only poop in it has been fox and cat!:vom: We've also had to cut down a lot of well established bushes because they've died so are going to put in some more in the autumn. We put in a Bramley Apple tree last year and an eating apple tree the year before. I have a buddleia that has rooted itself by the drive next the the caravan so we'll did that up and pop it in the back garden as I really don't want it where it is.

Yes, mealworms are definitely not good for hoggies, although they do seem to find them addictive. The BHPS say they cause a serious problem, something to with calcium deficiency I think.
I have special hoggy nuggets though the b@#%@#* crows and magpies like them too and keep stealing them.
I haven't seen any hogs this year 😕, but there have been poops which I think are hedgehogs occasionally.

I didn't know that about meal worms, she used to only put out a pinch and the robin stole them if they didn't arrive quick enough, so hopefully they didn't eat many. She does have water down for them, the birds and apparently the neighbours cat! At one time she had hedgehog dry food but we both thought it looked suspect. I found hedgehog poop in my garden this morning, my neighbour says one has been around in his for a long time so it must have found a way through the hedge. I shan't feed it as we also have rats, we have plenty of slugs, it's are welcome to those.

I think hedgehogs can eat a few mealworms just not too often

I wish they would come back, I missed them last time I was there. They are very entertaining if they both turn up at the same time. They grunt a lot and shove each other around. Imagine a pair of boars who don't like each other much!
Her neighbour did say one turned up in his garden once this year but he's not seen it since.

Our grass is brown with bald patches. We've still only had that one heavy down pour 2 weeks ago and a bit of drizzle that doesn't even make the ground wet. Every day we watch dark clouds circle us and go away again. We need rain for the garden badly.
There's an underground stream that runs under my garden, even during the most dryest of days my garden remains deep green. 👍

It's raining, that steady rain that's not too hard, the sort that will soak into the ground. :yahoo: Just walked down the garden and I can hear a gentle drip as it goes into the water butts. The piggies exhausted our grass a few weeks ago. I've been going next door to raid their shady patches that were still green, hopefully ours will be growing again soon.

It should be greening up today if your weather is anything like ours this morning! ☔

We have a large bag of poultry cat nuggets from Aldi that hoggies love. We've checked online, they love wet/dry poultry cat food. 👍
