No eating

My latest investigative procedure cost £185 in total. That included sedation, dental and an x-ray.
That is a very high quote and I am sorry to hear this.
I thought it was high.

He was sedated so they could look at his back teeth. They were absolutely fine. But the vet noticed a bit of pus coming from one of his incisors. But he had no visible lump at the time so he was given ABs. They didn’t work. About 2 weeks later a huge 4cm lump appeared and he needed an op to marsupialise it. It cost £1,000 in total. Piggies are unfortunately not cheap pets.

We are only guessing what could be wrong with your piggy. See what the vet says tomorrow. ❤️
Wow. I am slowly learning that they are not cheap. Almost had them 2 years and I am still learning so much about them.

I honestly don't know what to do for the best. I feel so bad and it breaks my heart. I'm trying to hide it all from the kids as well.

It obvious depends on the procedure. What exactly was the quote for?
Sedation, to check back teeth and if need any work done, possible x-ray and not sure if that was for fluids etc

It would have been around £300 if they did bloods as well but as his teeth were the problem they didn’t need to.

I wonder @weepweeps, what was the cost of the initial procedure.
I am just wondering if their quote is on the high side or if what I paid was on the cheap side.

Fingers crossed things start to look better for tomorrow x

I am wondering if it is his front teeth and if they need cutting to be straight again.

Thank you me too x

I doubt I will be that simple. But it’s a cheap first thing to try. They burr them without a GA it think.

I think it was roughly:

£100 first consultation, Pain killers and baytril.

About £300 to have his back teeth checked more pain killers and more baytril and critical care

Then off to the Cat and Rabbit specialist vets in Northampton.
£500 for consultation, operation, pain killers and Zithromax AB. This is a great AB for abscesses.
Plus more critical care.

£60 for 2nd post op check at Cat and Rabbit. Plus more ABs and pain meds and critical care.

£100 for more critical care.

He didn’t eat for himself for about 8 weeks. So you will need to make sure you have the time to care for a sick piggy too.

No not usually. Incisors are generally left alone. As i have said, slanted incisors can indicate a problem with the back teeth and an uneven chew - if it hurts for a piggy to chew on one side perhaps due to a spur, then they will chew jusf on the other side hence the front teeth become more worn on one side than the other.
Putting the front teeth straight will not cure any problems which are at the back. The slant will immediately come back if problems with the back are not dealt with.

He back home. Got to go back on Saturday. He has gained a bit of weight and seems more alert and it's good that he is eating a little. He is currently eating a bit of lettuce. He can't see anything wrong with his teeth and had a good feel. I got to keep doing what I am doing

I was given cc every 3 hours would going to every 4 hours be okay.

Glad he seems a little better and the vet trip was positive. With regards to syringe feeding it’s not about how long you can go between feeds. It’s how much you can get in him at each one. Have you weighed him this morning? Has he lost weight since yesterday? If so you need to up how many mls of critical care you got in him yesterday. If he’s gained weight since yesterdays weigh in then I’d aim for the same amount of critical care today that he ate yesterday. Some pigs like syringe feeding and with happily take 20mls in one sitting. On the other hand another pig may only be able to take 5mls. So this piggy will need feeding more often throughout the day to get the required amount in them.

Hope that makes sense. Good luck.

Yes all makes sense.
The vet checked his weight and it had gone up just over 20gs which he was happy with.
I got about 60mls in yesterday. Sometimes I can get between 10-15 MLS in a sitting not tried for more. Also making sure he gets a bit of water as well.

If you can feed throughout the day between early morning say 6.30 am through to just before you go to bed. Aim to get at least 40 ml in that time, the more the better. Hope your little man is feeling better very soon 🤞

Sounds like you are doing really well with 60 mls and try hand feeding little bits of veggies. A bowl of plain dry porridge oats can be put in his cage too, they often like them and will help maintain his weight too

Thank you. I shall try and get more in him before I go to bed. I have got to still give him emeprid every 8 hours. Which will be about 4am.

I have put some oats in a bowl but not interested yet.

Morning update.
Jack is eating little bits here and there. Has seen him have a wee and look fine. He poos are softer and lighter in colour still small. Taken his cc okay and taking water with it.
His weighted yesterday was 1291g
Today it is 1314g

Update

Jack's weight has stayed the same today.
Yesterday he was a pickle for taking his cc. Today I have managed to get him to have more.

He has nibble at some corn and grated carrot. Had some parsley.

My piggy had slanted front teeth, lack of appetite and weight loss and an ear infection was diagnosed. The pain from the ear was affecting his appetite. However I had a scan to get it diagnosed and he was on antibiotics for several weeks. Not suggesting your piggie has an ear infection but just offering an alternative to ask your vet.

Thank you. I will ask on Saturday when he goes back.
