she was moving around just fine yesterday when i went to check on her and give her some dandelions like always and i went to go check on her this morning and i found her lying in her box on her side so i took away her box to see if she would move and she didnt so i got her out of her cage and put her on the floor to see if she would stat moving around but she just flopped on her side again n she watched me. Her eating is normal she did get excited when i put timothy hay in her cage but she still didnt get up and she did bite me for trying to move she so both legs were on the ground and did squeak a lil and she is drinking water but i had to put her next to it s she could drink from it. Does anyone know what could have caused this because i have never seen this before and this is my second guinea pig.

Gosh you poor thing. I'm a total novice but hopefully someone will know. What i am sure of, however, is that she needs a vet. Hope she gets better soon x

There are many reasons that could be causing this but all need vet treatment. What I would do is dont accept an opinion to pts. we have experienced this sort of thing abd it can be sorted.

Please have her seen asap as an emergency!

If the paralysis is one-sided, it has likely been caused by a stroke. if it is affecting both hind legs, then it can have a wide range of causes, the vast majority of which will right themselves eventually. Your vet needs to check whether there is an injury to the spine.

Sorry to hear about Sundae. It definatly sounds like she is in pain but the only way to get an accurate answer as to what is happening is to see an vet. I hope everything turns out okay!

So sorry to hear your piggy is poorly, please take her to the vet, as it seems she needs immediate help

took her to the vet and they are doing x-rays on her and they had to sedate her a lil but i am hoping they are able to help her and make her better

Oh - how horrible for you. I hope everything is OK. Healing vibes for Sundae

I'm so glad shes in such good hands, hope she gets better soon, all best to you x

Wishing your Sundae the very best. She's being taken care of, she'll be alright. You did an excellent job.

Keeping everything crossed for Sundae. I agree it sounds like it may have been a stroke.

Do you know if your vet is considering water therapy if it is paralysis?

idk if thats even possible but ill check with him tomorrow when she goes back and they also think she mite be paralyzed to

Not sure what they mean by 'guinea pig paralysis'? Hope they can find some sort of cause so she can be helped. But it can be difficult on such a small creature sometimes. Keep us all updated.

PS. just noticed your reply. Hope shes come home with some pain relief or had an injection?

If you search on here I think it has been mentioned in other threads. I can have a look in a moment. You would need an official diagnosis first though before deciding if it was an option and the most important thing at the moment will be controlling her pain.

is there any way i can do water therapy at home for her since i don't have a lot of money and couldn't afford going to a specialist

and my mom told me it is for sure guinea pig back paralysis and that there isn't much we can do either and she is in a lot of pain rite now and the only option they gave me was to put her down but he gave her some medicine to help wit swelling and he is hoping that will help her and i am hoping to

yes i am and if nothing h changed in her tomorrow we might have to put her down i will be sad bout her but ik ill get back on my feet looking for a new guinea pig though i mite look for 2 bonded males or 2 bonded females idk yet but if she is better in the morning I'm going to be extermly happy

I agree with this, what is guinea pig paralysis? It's either due to an injury, or arthrities or maybe some other infection. Either way, the diagnosis doesn't sound like it comes from a knowledgeable vet. Please do not have her put to sleep based on paralysis. I don't know how to link to my own thread, but my own giunea pig became paralysed about 1 -2 months ago due to severe arthritis. He was in pain, but he has been on loxicom and for a while a really strong pain medication vetergenisic. There was no movement in his hindlegs for 3 or more weeks. We tried the water therapy as suggested by helen, but he was getting so distressed and contracted an inner ear infection so we had to stop it. However our vet showed us normal physiotherapy (bending his toes and massaging his muscles). Since last week he has started to crawl with his hindlegs, he is using the backlegs again to scratch himself, and today he could stand up. We did not have any hope of him walking again, but now he may be getting there. Please ask for a second opinion or ask your vet to ring one of the more guinea
pig savvy vets (our vet Glenn at Apex is fantastic and I know that he has been rung by other vets before). I'm going to post some videos to show the progress (paralysis to movement, but I need to get round to it). I'm happy to record a physiotherapy session if it helps, but this would only work if she hasn't a severe spinal injury.

today she did move a lil but not much but still thats very good and she can now stand up on her back legs which is amazing and her appetite hasn't gone down at all her drinking habits are still the same were going to try calcium pills and we r hoping that will help her some and she is using her front legs to help her back legs a lil and i feel like she mite be ok but we just need to find something to help. she can walk if i hold her back legs for her which i think she mite like but idk for sure.

Hi, "Monster", I cannot praise you enough for how well you have taken care of Sundae's medical problem. Why not take this situation one fragment at a time. Lets get rid of the mites, syringe feed and hydrate, do the mushed pellets and then the forum members will help you along. Step by step, one day at a time
Thanks,
Alexis

welll we went to the vet again and she moved all four legs and her back it was amazing to watch and he gave her another shot which did seem to help and he is amazed to see her moving more then yesterday and we r going to start giving her some calcium pills tonight and the vet loved that idea and thinks it will help her a lot to
