Hello, wondered whether anyone has come across this with their piggies before?
Yesterday afternoon I found one of my 7 year old female guinea pigs Audrey, with what I originally thought was a large rectal prolapse, almost the size of a plum. I took her straight to the emergency vet within the hour who after having a good look actually felt it was a mass, so she had basically pushed out a mass, there was a very small prolapse with it but not very much.
She underwent surgery last night and has had as much of the mass removed, although unfortunately the ‘stalk’ of the mass was to high up so not been able to remove it all, it has gone off for histology analysis to see what we are dealing with but wondered if anyone has come across anything like this before. I’ve had piggies for many years and also work at a vets but this is a totally new one on me!
I’m collecting her this afternoon from the vets, she isn’t eating by herself this morning but taking syringe feeding very well so hopefully with time and being back home she will get going, also passing blood clots as to be expected after everything that’s gone on.
Well done if you’ve got to the end of this post, any experience and also in terms of recovery would be much appreciated.
Thank you, Rachel 🙂

Hi!

It sounds like some growth in the womb to me? It is however not quite common but polyps can grow in organs like the bladder, the gut or reproductive tract.

Oh, love. I hope Audrey is okay, please let us know how you get on. 💕

My little Mischief had something like this. I also thought it was a prolapse. It was horrific to see and there was a lot of blood. It turned out to be polyp attached to her intestine which she had passed. About the size of a grape. She recovered fine but the vet had never seen anything like it before on a Guinea pig. It was truly vile to witness but very simple to fix. Her stalk however was easy to reach so the polyp was fairly easy to remove. She is 5 so maybe it’s an older Guinea pig thing?

poor thing, glad you got her seen to straight away and i hope she recovers quickly!
What a shock..

Sounds horrible, must have been a shock! So glad you got her seen quickly by the vet.
Hope Audrey recovers quickly.xx

Thanks for all your good wishes and replies. Audrey has been home 15 minutes and already tucking into a pile of vegetables, she hadn’t eaten anything on her own at the vets so she’s certainly glad to be home!
From the mess she was in yesterday you now literally would not have known, she looks just back to normal, so medication now and fingers crossed until results of mass are back. Will keep you updated.

Aw, so pleased for Audrey, and wishing her now a very speedy recovery x

*update*
Sadly not a good one, little Audrey passed away Saturday night, she had a brilliant week and recovered seemingly so well, her weight was stable and eating brilliantly, was a right madame with her medication! Very unexpectedly found her passed away in her bed.
Got results back from the laboratory today which came back as it was a colonic polyp, no cancer or any cancerous cells found so makes the whole thing even more puzzling really as to her death but she had a happy 7 years with her friends.

Really sorry to hear this, I just liked your last post above and then scrolled down to this sad news. Hope you are alright 👍

Oh my word, I’m so sorry, love. In shock.

She was a good age and you did all you could, find peace in that. Here if you need to talk. 💕

Aw poor little lady and poor you, just as she was on the mend, so sorry
Sleep tight little Audrey x
