I've just logged back on to apologise for my last message. I feel very silly that I wrote it, let alone posted it. It was childish and I'm embarrassed.

So, sorry and thank you for your responses.

I will update Pig's thread once he has fully recovered to let you know if the neutering worked or not.

Dont worry luvvy, we all understand - thinking of Pig x>>

Please don't worry and don't feel silly. Looking after poorly pigs is very emotional and stressful not to mention lack of sleep etc etc so its perfectly understandable that you get a little upset at times.

I'm sure everyone understands so don't give it another thought and please continue to keep us updated.

Lots of love x

I've not been on the forum for a while (due to various reasons - settling into a new job, dealing with personal issues and also intensively nursing a poorly piggy - just had no time for anything)....but was thinking of you and your boys today. I took one of mine to see Anne the Vet and noticed your gorgeous Christmas card stuck to the waiting room notice board - it stood out a mile with those beautiful piggies on the front and I couldn't resist peeking inside to see if it was from anyone I "knew" from here, and it was! Anyway it made me smile and I wondered how you were all getting on and looked up Little Pig's thread for an update so here I am!

I sincerely hope that Little Pig is doing well and hope that you and Womble are also well. Feel free to pm me if you ever need a friendly ear x

I'm a little worried and disheartened tonight. Pig has a tiny sore on the base of his penis and this is how the cycle usually starts. I'm not going to put the collar back on him yet, just going to keep a very close eye and see if it progresses or not. I'm trying not to be too disappointed at this stage, but am finding it hard.

He's not been eating very well today either and has done some very small, sorry looking poos. He ate his vegetables with gusto this evening though, which is good and I topped him up with some Recovery Plus. I will probably give him another feed before I go to bed and again in the morning.

I'm wondering if there is a link between his penis being extruded and the nibbling... He was at the vets last night for a check-up which went really well, but the vet did get his penis out to look at it. Could be a complete coincidence, I just don't know anymore.

Missy - lovely to hear from you, I had been wondering where you had disappeared to! You weren't the lady I was chatting to at the vets last night were you (the one with the guinea pig with the throat abscess)?

This is the first time Ive seen this thread. Hugs from one piggy carer to another.
Piggys is obviously a wee fighter, keep going and try not to be disheartened. Positivity can only do good.

Awww thank you. No that wasn't me - I was there earlier in the day, with Yossi, my boar with stones.

Sorry to hear that Little Pig is giving you so much cause for concern. I guess that eureka moment gets closer and closer the more you monitor him and try to piece together all the clues....although I know how confusing and disheartening it can get when your brain gets frazzled with it all. You're clearly doing your very best for him but you're not a Vet (or Miss Marple!) so don't be too hard on yourself! :)

Hope his appetite (and output) improves soon. Let us know x

He nibbled a bit more overnight, but we are still talking about a teeny tiny little scratch-like wound on the base of his penis right now. It had scabbed over by morning and he doesn't seem to have made it any worse today. He seems to be eating a bit better today and his poos are looking a bit more healthy. I'm still giving him top-up syringe feeds to be on the safe side and am keeping a close eye on him. I really don't want to put the collar back on him, but I suspect it won't be many days before it is needed again. We have a vet appointment on Wednesday and it is looking like it is back to the drawing board.

Oh poor Pig - heres hoping 2012 will be better for him - happy christmas to you both x

Pig is doing really well. He hasn't nibbled again since my last post - I'm really pleased and relieved. He is back at the vets tomorrow for a check-up and will be moved out of his hospital cage tomorrow too. His appetite and poos have also been good.

Whey hey little pig - here's hoping pig has a healthy 2012 xx

Great news! I've been following this thread and rooting for him for a while and its great to know that he seems to have turned a corner! :)

have you tried daktarin gel on his.penis 3 times a day for 3 wks and 0.5ml oral gel (same one ) 3 times a day for 3 wks? also putting some sudocream on hid penis will help when he bites it or metanium cream used for babies its a total block from urine burns i would start tl suspect internal fungal.now as internal fungals can present thenselves by causes problems in their gut and penis x

Thanks for the advice clairelove. Pig has had a swab (of the penis) and a biopsy (of the wound) and had cultures from both samples. Neither showed any signs of fungal and he has not presented with any fungal symptoms. This is something that was considered some time ago and was dismissed by my vet whom I have a huge amount of confidence in. Pig is currently not nibbling and had a very positive trip to the vets today to review his post-neuter healing.

Also, as an aside, my vet is not a fan of sudocream in general - she prescribed Derma Gel, which we have used with some success.

Hi, Just wondering how little pig is doing - I hope he's behaving himself x

Hi Louise, thank you so much for asking. I haven't been on the forum much recently so have only just seen this.

I'm hesitant to say anything as I still think it is far too soon to tell and I don't want to jinx anything... so I'm just going to state the facts and keep my optimism out of it!

Pig was neutered on 5th December and I took his collar off 2 weeks after the operation. My counting might be wrong, but if he makes it to Monday, that is 6 weeks with the collar off. In that time, he only nibbled once (and a very, very tiny amount) and has not hurt himself since. Before the operation, he would usually only go 2 weeks or less before damaging himself again.

Bless him, I won't say too much, I don't want to jinx it either! Perhaps it was a psychological thing and the neutering just broke the cycle. Whatever it was, I hope it stays that way. x
